Yeah, when I read where bubbapt said "3 straight illegal formation penalties in a row" I was thinking "No way. I remember 2 and I can't say they were back to back, maybe real close together though." It was our 1st play, I recall.
Porter said after the game that they had conferred with the officials beforehand and had been told it was OK. Now, whether it wasn't explained correctly to them or whether it was SEC officials wanting to hose us, I can't say.

I woke in the middle of the night in a cold sweat, imagining we still had Rip Scherer’s offense.

Add in Covid and lack of spring practice and new coaches and everything that’s happened over the course of the last few months and it makes it an extremely difficult first year. We lost to SMU after not practicing for almost 3 weeks on a last second field goal and got run off the field by a team that is running everyone off the field.
Larry Porter's problem was he thought he was paranoid. He wasn't paranoid he really was being punched by Dubose and his minions.

Remember the first 3 plays of the Porter era? 3 straight illegal formation penalties in a row...
I do. I was in total shock, and amazed at what I saw. Amazed in a bad way.

Good ole' Rip. The first game that I went to when I was in college, and in the band, was the 1999 Ole Miss game where we lost 3-0. Our defense was amazing, but our offense was so terrible.

Man, that defense was good. Idrees Bashir, Marcus Bell, Marcus Smith, Michael Stone... who am I missing?

Absolutely no creativity on offense. Zero. From a HC who had spent his entire career as a QB coach and OC. It was surprising.
Charlie Bailey often gets overlooked. He took over from the Dempsey disaster and turned things around quickly. He could have been the guy to build it here, but got a bad wrap from NCAA snitches - likely SEC fans. In his short 3 years he beat Bama, Florida, Miss State, Old Miss, Vandy, and Louisville. He was making more than a few local SEC fans uncomfortable.
