Exclamation Rice @ LaTech 11-14 [Postponed by LaTech, No makeup date given]
ESPN 3 at 2:30 CT next Saturday

ESPN has the Bulldogs at a 54.5% chance to win, so basically a coin toss. Given how few games we've played, I can't say I disagree. I didn't find any Vegas odds, and since I'm not a bettor, I don't know where else to look for them or care to try. LaTech also had their game postponed for COVID this past weekend, so both teams will have last played on Halloween.

LaTech this year:
4-3 overall, 3-2 C-USA
W @ Southern Miss. 31-30
W vs. HBU 66-38
L @ BYU 14-45
W vs. UTEP 21-17
L vs. Marshall 17-35
L @ UTSA 26-27
W vs. UAB 37-34, OT

They're 3-1 in one-score games, so lucky/unlucky bounces could range their record from 1-7 to 5-2. They're essentially at the median of their own schedule.

I bet this game happens, but I would not give much chance of the games against UTEP and UNT happening.

The only game on their schedule so far that impresses me much is the last one.

ESPN has LaTech as a 1 pt. favorite, still with a 54.5% chance of winning.

Team stats would seem to favor the Owls, although the Owls stats are based on only 2 games vs. 7 for LaTech.

One point favorite at home? Not a rousing endorsement.

Still, the game is a virtual coin flip.

Given that neither team seems to have announced a COVID cancellation by now, I think it's safe to assume that we will be getting a game this weekend. Our website has the countdown to kickoff splash page up.

Also, something to note for player performance: Class instruction for undergrads must be completely finished Friday next week (the 20th) at which point most on-campus students will be sent home, but there's probably a varsity exception. Then, they'll have two weeks to work on normal semester homework (e.g. term papers, a final problem set) due no later than December 04. Final exams will be the 9th to 16th.

It's almost like we should have decided to play as many games before the weather got colder and our campus Covid numbers were in the single digits. Feel bad for the team to get jerked around by the morons at Lovett Hall, who structured the academic schedule so that in-person classes would end by Thanksgiving, but then thought it wise to delay the football season, knowing full well it would potentially cause our team to play games in December.

You jinxed it. Game off due to LA Tech.

From The Roost:

Quote:Rice football's upcoming game against Louisiana Tech has been postponed due to COVID-19 complications at Louisiana Tech.

For the second time in two weeks, Rice football has had a game postponed by COVID-19 issues from their opponent. The Louisiana Tech game is off after the Bulldogs were forced to pull out of the upcoming game in Ruston.

Rice had last week's game against UTSA postponed on Friday morning. This postponement comes late in the week once again. The Owls were preparing for Thursday afternoon practice when they were told the game would not be played as scheduled.

At this time, neither Rice or Louisiana Tech share an open date. The Owls had previously had games against Marshall and UAB added to their schedule last week. Whether or not the UTSA game would take priority over the Marshall game was a focal point of conversations last week. The math gets increasingly more complicated with one more C-USA West game called off again this week.

Western Kentucky remains the only C-USA school to avoid a postponed game because of COVID-19. A full list of C-USA games impacted by postponements since the season kicked off in late August is available on our Conference USA COVID-19 Postponement Tracker.

The next game on the schedule for Rice football is a Nov. 21 road trip to North Texas. They have not played since beating Southern Miss on the road on Halloween. According to the schedule as it exists today, Rice won't play at home again until Nob. 28 against UTEP. Whether any of those games are played according to that schedule is very much so up in the air.

The subscriber-only content mentions an interesting, though possibly remote, contingency possibility.

Louisiana Tech says:

Quote:Due to injuries, COVID positive cases and contact tracing, the Bulldogs have one position group that is too thin to play the game without risking the health of its players.

“We are very disappointed that we cannot host Rice this weekend, but it is simply a case of not having enough healthy players at one position,” said LA Tech VP and Director of Athletics Eric Wood. “Injuries have really affected the position and now a couple of COVID positives along with contact tracings to the same group have made this decision for us.

With cases accelerating nation-wide, as well as state-wide, I can see more cancellations. And, at this point in the season I think they will be cancellations and not reschedules. Dates available for further rescheduled games are just about non-existent, unless CUSA ditches the Championship game and teams use that date to try to reschedule division games. Not ideal.
This season is relentlessly evolving to the 2020* season.

Not that in matters to your point, but the President and Provost moved from Lovett Hall to Allen Center about 15 years ago.

Back in early March 2020, I was in what used to be the president's suite in Lovett Hall. It most recently housed the staff of the Rice Management Company, which has since moved to Rice Village (taking over the building on Morningside that used to house Brian O'Neill's). By March 2020, the Lovett Hall suite was completely empty. What brought there was one of these neat little occasions that I seem to have a knack for creating: back in January, I had noticed that the US flag at Lovett Hall that flies over the Academic Quad was faded and torn, and I politely recommended to the appropriate VP that it might be time to replace it. A new flag was ordered pretty quickly, and when it came in (it is BIG and heavy-- not the kind you just pick at Home Depot), I was asked if I wanted to be there when it was put up. It will not surprise anyone who knows me that I accepted this invitation with alacrity! Since the old presidential suite is also the access to the balcony where the flagpole is, the Rice carpenter who is in charge of the flag showed me up there one morning. I helped him unfold the new flag and then ceremonially fold up the old one.

North Texas and UTEP (next two opponents) are basically the Texas hot spots for covid right now. I think we'll be 1-1 heading into December.

You also have to wonder about whether basketball will get a chance to play too. The Ivy League just canceled all winter sports (including hoops). I've seen the schedules for both teams and the men are supposed to start their season in 2 weeks at Incarnate Word (they also play Our Lady of the Lake out there - it was supposed to be a tournament that also included North Dakota but they must have opted out).

UTEP's next "home" game next week is going to be played in Midland at 10 AM on Friday...as the curtain-raiser for the Midland/Midland Lee HS football game at 6 PM. Supposedly they might just play the rest of their "home" games there.

We might finish this season with a 1-1 record - just one doink from an undefeated season.

New Mexico has their team living in a hotel in a Las Vegas suburb. They'll play only road games and are sharing practice facilities with UNLV (who is not on the schedule, so they're flying out of Vegas every weekend). It's costing UNM $70k per week above normal but playing should bring in $4MM in revenue from MWC payouts. They'll be the first team in I-A to play a road-only schedule.

That’s an interesting move. I assume it’s in an effort to move the game out the current National COVID hotspot (El Paso). However, we here in Midland can legitimately lay claim to being the second hotspot in the state. Hospitals with about 25-30 % of the beds being occupied by COVID patients. ICUs at greater than 95% occupancy. Ventilators are at a premium. And both hospitals opening newly remodeled floors for COVID patients...providing they can find the nurses and MDs to staff them.
At the present rate, I’m sorta doubtful that UTEP-UAB is going to be played in Midland-Odessa.

As has been pointed out, that would be our highest winning percentage in several years, and our fewest losses in generations.
