Not much. About $7000 per year for everything if I remember correctly.
My daughter just graduated from college in 2017. Debt free because I/we saved for it.

I’m not saying your wrong about the costs.

I just feel if you take a loan out, you pay it back.

Serious question to folks against this, you don't think there would be a net positive to the entire economy with student loan relief? I mean how much do you individually stand to lose if this happens? $100 in taxes? Sounds like a case of "I didn't get help, so you shouldn't either" narrative to me.

Again, I really hope you all don't stay silent next time the 1% get the bulk of anything.

I’m not in favor because where do you draw the line? After helping with student debt, what’s next?

I’ll gladly be in favor of using my tax dollars to help fund roads I will drive on, build public schools my kids will attend, etc. but why should I be responsible for helping pay for someone’s choice? Yea, it may be $100. But what $100 comes next? Where does that road end?

Attending college on a loan is a choice. And with that choice comes obligation to meet the terms of the loan.

How about all these stupid majors that don’t lead to employment after college? Parents let their kids rack up debt in a major that doesn’t lead to a job. Does that make any sense?

I went to college because I knew an education would mean a better job with higher wages upon graduation. Today it is a precursor to working as a waiter or waitress upon graduation because there is no employment in the field of Art History of Asian Empires.

I agree that people who chose degrees with extremely limited professional options shouldn’t be expecting a bailout for their college loans. I don’t think those are stupid majors though. Just stupid people choosing a major that doesn’t make sense for their post-grad job opportunities.

Enlightened society has historically worked toward the opportunity for people to study these subjects most commonly referred to as “stupid majors” (art, music, philosophy, etc).

Spot on......the message it would send and where would it go next is the issue. Take personal responsibility for your loans/debts, period.

That tax money could be much better spent giving aid to the homeless, kids that don't have enough to eat, veterans issues, roads/infrastructure, public schools........rather than someone's poorly managed student debt that they freely accepted as an adult.

Bottom line is pretty simple.....your loan your responsibility period end of story. It is not your neighbors, your friends, your co-workers responsibility for YOUR student debt that YOU freely incurred.

RE: Facility sell out JMU athletic fund raiser
I'm actually shocked by the inability of some to understand a bigger topic, but yet be so concrete in their opinions. I get that people might not understand economics but some of these statements are cringe worthy.

17/18 year olds are fully competent to sign up for tens of thousands of loans to get an education that 99% of adults are telling them is a must, but not competent enough to handle a white claw?

A high school senior at 18 can totally receive a completely free education, but that 18 year old in college? Heck no! Screw the fact that the high schooler is a future tradesman and we are paying for them to learn something useless to them like the significance of Hamlet, but the 17 year old is a future life saving doctor paying their way through chemistry.

I'm actually shocked that I still can't marry my dog. Everyone was so concerned about "drawing the line" with gay marriage that I was certain I'd be able to marry him by now.

"Back in my day (when a 25 hour a minimum wage job could afford full time tuition and board), I paid for my own school so screw these kids that are expected to be engaged in extracurricular clubs and organizations, have a 4.0 GPA, and volunteer at the boys and girls club before my company will even think about offering them an unpaid internship."

Like JFC how thick is that glass on your houses cause some of you are appear to be picking up some pretty large boulders.

EDIT: Sorry, I was incorrect above. It only required you *23* hours a week to pay full time tuition. https://www.forbes.com/sites/patrickwwat...2804232e86

I'm planning to send in headshots of my youngins. Just maybe it further solidifies the fact that they don't have a choice on schools in 16 and 18 years 04-cheers

I didn't see it called out but I'll mention it here as it seems like this stuff gets back to the decision makings.... They should take some "crowd" shots to send to the donors once its all set up. It'd be really cool to have a team photo in front of the set up cutouts to keep with the actual headshots.

I wanted to move on from the political convo because it’s a political convo with no place on this thread. I used language commonly used, but I do understand folks getting triggered by it.

Did not realize the Convo was political. Now wonder we built a new non-political arena!

Yea, now ask yourself why that is.

To the topic at hand, do I get a refund for driving used cars, skipping vacations or nights eating out to pay for our two (May 20, Dec20) graduates?

We saved, forego’ed various indulgences, budgeted accordingly so they could go to school and come out without that debt load.

Now, the two of us and the two of THEM should be on the hook for generations of students a year or two younger than they?

C’mon, man. Problem is, sooner or later you run out of other peoples money.

Get a job like we did, spend some time at your local CC to transfer credits in, eat on your meal plan and skip the Uber eats.

Above all, avoid the temptation to believe someone else should pay for your schit. That’s a perilous path to a life of misery.

Imo the whole system needs some major changes- everything from the prices that colleges charge, to low cost or subsidized community colleges/trade schools for kids and families who can’t afford to go to a 4 year school, to the interest rates that the lenders charge for student loans, to caps on the amount of student loans (similar to caps on 401k loans). The system barely works for the upper middle class- the amount that people have to spend on 4 years of education for multiple children is ridiculous. That said, in the whole scheme of things and I know this is a JMU centric board JMU isn’t a worst offender or even close to one here.

JMUDunk - So you you are arguing against helping others / getting "schit" paid for by giving examples of you helping others and your children getting "schit" paid for? Very odd. Anyways, it kind of sounds like you raised a couple of freeloaders to me.
