Agree. This collection is unbelievably beautiful. I definitely want to see it. I had no idea that JMU had such a museum.

Not sure if they are planning to change it, or have in the last 8 years, but the "museum" is a 10 foot by 10 foot room in Memorial.

I think the article mentioned it is housed in Festival now.

Yeaaa I got bored about 5 paragraphs into that article and did not scroll far enough down to the picture of the museum. It is much nicer than the room I went to.

It’s not the size of the room, but what is inside...

Maryland used the same promotion as us, but they created a benefit to participation.

Maryland added this part.

"fans may purchase a virtual ticket package that includes a custom made graphic and three scratch off tickets to win an Exclusive Gameday Experience for a game in the 2021-22 season."

I think that addition will provide more motivation for people to participate.

Agreed....but to be honest I am kind of over JMU coming with a hand extended looking for yet another donation fund drive. I am happy to donate when the school is 'fully open' and activities are available to all students, athletes, alumni, and fans alike.

I realize times are tough right now with funding, but I don't see it as anyone's responsibility to fund JMU functioning.

It seems to me that JMU does not have any reserves in times of a downturn (granted Higher ED has always been immune to real-world economic downturns in the past).

This funding source is closed to JMU until students can have an actual 'real' education experience with in person classes.

If there was ever a time to tap into university endowments, now is it - across the country. the endowment $ is there for many schools to do this and survive - rather than leaning on the states/ taxpayers/ alumni to bail them out entirely . If an an endowment is too "sacred" to tap into for a "once in a 100 year Pandemic" that threatens Humanity, what in the world is it good for? Private businesses across the country , and world are forced to use any cash available / retained earnings to bridge the gap until we come out of this, or file bankruptcy - why are colleges not being asked by states to use their endowments first ? maybe some state universities are , but i have not seen it publicized.

I'm no expert but I would think that there are laws prohibiting institutions to "just tap into" their endowments.

To Shady's point, no college in the USA has a "savings" account like the rest of us do (should? haha). If students are not going to class (paying tuition), colleges have no income, which makes it awful hard to pay the bills. Just like numerous businesses, we will absolutely see colleges and universities close their doors because of COVID-19. Choosing to not support JMU fundraising right now is a personal decision fans can make. I would remind folks to remember that there is a much bigger picture when it comes to why schools like JMU are asking for dollars these days - a much deeper conversation than a quick take or position to offer on a message board 04-cheers

To JMU specific situation.......Students are paying tuition for an inferior/watered down product that we are told over and over is just as good as 'normal'. That is 'hogwash' and a load of crap that I don't see how Alger and company can even say and maintain credibility and a with a straight face.

So if the students at JMU are paying tuition and maybe to a lesser degree room & board based on online approach......the income stream is still there, although reduced.....not like it is zero income.

How do we square the competing ideas of “JMU should have ample reserves” with “JMU should reduce tuition because I don’t like the bang for my buck”?

Excellent question......I don't think JMU or any other college has an obligation to reduce tuition (JMU has not reduced tuition one cent, btw) now b/c of current situation. That is not my contention whatsoever. JMU is getting their income from students/parents to provide an education in 2020 the same as they were in 2015.

Now do I think colleges need to do some hard number crunching to reduce the cost of tuition in general, absolutely. The cost has really gotten to be ridiculous for public colleges and universities which are subsidized by the state in varying degrees. I cut private colleges slack on this topic, they are not taxpayer funded/subsidized so they can let it rip as far as tuition goes.

I agree that the fat needs to be trimmed and tuition costs need to be more reasonable at public universities on a global scale. The student debt crisis is directly connected to those soaring costs.

Agreed mostly.

I don't buy into this whole student debt/victim narrative. These are young adults who willfully entered into a financial obligation. This current narrative is a slap in the face to those of us that worked thru college, planned, repaid financial obligations.

Eh, whatever......fine to call it a crisis if one so chooses, I just disagree with that notion.

And have no interest in taxpayer funding of student debt repayment. That is an idea that is complete BS. Why should anyone else be responsible for their student loans? It is just an absurd notion.

I do think some folks made some poor decisions with their college education, major choice, and acceptance of loans. But these folks are adults so they should be held accountable for their personal responsibilities.

And back to the topic of JMU athletic fund raisers, I got the email today about JMU selling arena photo cutouts for $30. Very good fundraiser at fair enough price range that I bought several.

RE: Facility sell out JMU athletic fund raiser
There's an uproar about talk of student loan relief, yet nothing about the 1% and corporations getting massive bailouts at the taxpayer's expense time and time again?

Man, these wealthy folks really got this down to a science. Everyone forgets about them while the people fighting for scraps want to hold each other down.

Serious question to folks against this, you don't think there would be a net positive to the entire economy with student loan relief? I mean how much do you individually stand to lose if this happens? $100 in taxes? Sounds like a case of "I didn't get help, so you shouldn't either" narrative to me.

Again, I really hope you all don't stay silent next time the 1% get the bulk of anything.

I’m with Shady.
I’m 58. I split my college education with my parents.
I saved money and paid for my kids college and was happy to do it. Happy to make sacrifices so I could save. They went to state schools in Virginia. One earned a nice scholarship that my company offers. We are blessed with the options available in Virginia, including the community college route that many take advantage of.

I will support JMU some with their fund raiser.
I miss saying Go Dukes.
Happy Thanksgiving.
