Potential QB for you
I like Terrance and I am sad to see him go but we are stacked for awhile and he has a daughter in Houston he wants to be closer to. Also told he was a good student as well.

Make sure your coaches get in touch with him.

Thanks Pony

I saw a high school kid that literally blew me away last weekend... looked like a man against boys in a 5-A game.... but he was still a little raw in some ways.

Ja'Kolby Longino - I understand he committed to UTEP, but based on what I saw I think he can do better.

I remember having exactly the same impression of Xavier Webb--except it was 3A, against Brenham, who was a 3A powerhouse at the time. He basically looked like Vince Young did against Rice. I remember emailing Ken about him, but wasn't sure about this grades. He ended up turning down Harvard and West Point to come to Rice--so grades were definitely not an issue--and we made him a DB. I wondered about that, because we were having serious QB issues at the time, and at least in HS he was a much better QB than DB. FWIW one of his HS coaches agreed with me on the latter opinion.

RE: Potential QB for you
RIvals lists him as a QB/Ath, so probably in the same mold.

If you'll recall though numbers, I think it was Hat who said that it was much more difficult to evaluate kids at the lower levels. They HAD to be men vs boys because although there are great players at 3a, there are always also kids (and coaches) who can be exploited.

What I saw was a kid who could make every single throw which is why I think we should look at him. My reference was only one game, but he was VERY impressive in that one game.... from the pocket and also on the move. What was more impressive was his pocket presence. I hate to make such a comparison, but he clearly watches Mahomes. He ducked/avoided the rush and was deadly in the open field, but he also kept his eyes downfield... he threw a couple shovels that weren't designed that way and also threw it away when he had to.

6-2 and somewhere between 175 and 195 depending on source. Looks like PV, TSU and UTEP were his offers. Again, I only had one point of reference, but I've seen some pretty decent QBs... and this kid (in this game anyway) has a ton of potential

No idea. The schools who recruited him don't imply especially high academic achievement. The fact that Tech and UH and UT and other places that have no problems recruiting marginal students have not suggests to me more of an exposure/lete development issue.

Based on his 2019 stats, he was only average. 11 TDs and 6 INTs

In the game I saw, he probably completed 15 in a row, some DEEP and probably threw for 5 touchdowns (and ran for at least one more). There was a pick, but it was one of those 'off the hands' ones.

It may have been a fluke, but it was sure impressive. I've watched a lot of Rice football and never seen that

I think the QB/Ath category is one that we should recruit heavily. Those are the kids that get told by TexasU and aTM, "Come here and we'll make you a safety," but we can get them by offering them a shot at QB. In the right scheme, those kids can be effective QBs at this level, and the ones who don't make it at QB could definitely upgrade the athleticism in our secondary. If he's good enough to start at safety for TexasU or aTm, he's clearly good enough to start at safety for us.

One problem I see with Bloomgren's offensive scheme is that those kids really can't play QB in it, so we can't really recruit them that way.

I like an offensive scheme that lets us recruit a lot of QB/Athletes, as well as Fullbacks and Tight Ends. The latter two are positions that are usually occupied by tough, medium-sized good athletes in HS, but that don't really fit well in Air Raid schemes. The P5s are probably going to pass on a lot of good athletes who aren't position fits. If we feature a FB and a TE in our offense, we can recruit some better athletes at those positions than we might get otherwise, and the ones who don't work out on offense can become good LBs or DEs on defense.

RE: Potential QB for you
I agree with this premise, Owl... but there are a few sites that list him as a Pro Style... and while I certainly saw him do amazing things in the open field and on the run... those were mostly broken plays. He did a great job on the zone read and was a serious threat to run. He also did the traditional drop back and throw.... and he could make all the throws. His 2nd pass of the game was off the fingertips... but a perfectly thrown deep ball go route. He completed at least two more like that in the game. He threw a great corner... a number of quick slants hitting guys in stride (one of his targets iirc is going to a p5 school). Bottom line, I don't think it would take major modifications to the offense to incorporate a guy with his skills... but unlike some pocket QBs... a guy who can get you out of trouble if things break down and still make plays on the move. That to me is vital in a scheme designed around steady progress and not having big negative plays. Not all of his plays were home runs... Some of the most impressive where ones where the defense had him cold... he mad a juke to give himself a throwing lane... and then a shovel pass that gained 3 yards rather than losing 5.

I don't think he starts as a true Freshman unless his school literally has nobody else, but I think a good QB coach could do wonders with this kid.

A QB/Athlete who can throw is exactly what I think we need to recruit, and we need to run the kind of offense where such a player can excel.

That would probably have been the description of Andre Ware coming out of HS. He was an option QB who was recruited by Yeoman to run the veer. Then Pardee replaced Yeoman and Ware became a star in the Run-and-Shoot. But he wasn't a drop-back QB and did not make it in the NFL. I do think he is a very good radio/TV analyst, one of the best.

If Ja'Kolby is out of Hightower, his grades should generally be good enough. Freshman Kobie Campbell is out of Hightower, as was Christian Bertrand from 2015-17. And...as was I!

Dude... Send a kid like that and a couple of the WRs and TEs we have to RU and you'd have an unstoppable offense, likely for the next 6-7 years at least (RUs son would take over)

Exactly what I thought would happen.

I wonder if RU's thinking could improve the defense, too, by teaching them to understand how the offense was trying to exploit them. RU?
