2021 AAC football scheduling model
Obviously, it's way too early to know what UC's schedule will look like for next year's football season. What I don't know is, in the absence of divisions, will all members cycle off years against all other conference members? Or will scheduling preserve annual rivalries for UC against a Memphis or UCF?
Whatever happens, it seems next year's conference schedule may be a bit easier as UC should avoid road games against SMU, UCF, Tulsa, and Temple. Prior to this season, those have all proven to be challenging road games most years.

Who knows what they are going to do. Someone will likely drop for Tulane and Navy who is set to get back on the schedule after two years off. I believe we would have to travel to both places as they played at Nippert in 2018.

I much prefer divisional setup, but who to add?

Nebraska. I hear they aren't happy and it would be a geographic rival for Tulsa.

There really is no good choice for an addition. Each potential invitee has flaws, and you would likely be "investing" in a program's "potential". Some schools rise to that challenge... UC did in the Big East, UCF, SMU Memphis, and Tulane have in the AAC while a school like ECU has not.

Tulane in FB but still horrible BB. No one goes to the BB games.

I'm pretty much in this camp. Some would suggest this a hypocritical position as we were all frustrated when the B12 suggested no candidate school "moved the needle". But really, Cincinnati was in the BCS 6 and prospered there with Orange and Sugar bowl appearances. None of the AAC candidate schools can claim that pedigree.
There are good, competitive football programs out there, and some fine universities too. But again, who believes the American's image is enhanced by adding Appalachian State, Coastal Carolina, Buffalo or UAB? Options are limited.
Before doing that, I'd pursue a multi-year scheduling arrangement (such as Notre Dame has with the ACC) with Air Force and Army. Those aren't P5 schools but each has a high national profile and are well regarded competitively most years. Both offer great road trips for fans too.

Aside from BYU, Army, Air Force and Boise, all we would be doing is elevating a program to our level (UMass, Liberty, UAB, all the usual suspects). It’s bad enough UC got screwed over in alignment and had to consort with Tulsa and ECU, we don’t need another.

The general image of the AAC is large public college in a large city. Think UC, UH, Memphis, UCF, USF, Temple. Exclude Navy. The other are in large cities except ECU.
So who fits that extends footprint.
UAB GSU Buffalo.
UAB GSU and Buffalo add new territory. My preference would be UAB with a new stadium, good BB history.
