UT XC, Track and Field: 2020-21
Well, apparently cross country season started today. How about that. Rocket women beat CMU & WMU in a tri-meet.

Looks like it is gonna be an extra-short season, with the conference championships on November 21 - location TBD

Rocket Women win the BG Invitational over 7 other schools. Men place 3rd out of 6 schools.

Kind of surprised at the disparity between the men's winner at BG and the final Rocket runner to finish. Winner was at 24:47 and the last Rocket runner was at 29:04 - a difference of 4:17 - or nearly a mile behind in what appears to be about a 5 mile course (given the times).

Assuming these resulst are correct:
http://www.finishtimingresults.com/2020/11-21-MAC/

UT women finish 2nd in the MAC XC Championship, missing out by 3 points to NIU. No seniors among Rockets who scored. JR Maya Hannagan led the Rockets with a 9th place finish.

UT men finish 5th. Also, no seniors (or juniors) among those who scored. SO Jacob Harris finished 7th.

Strange season - if you can call it a season.

MAC site confirms. BG was third only 3 points back and had a frosh who was individual winner. 04-jawdrop

Came across this totally by accident this week, but it appears that Emma Kertesz has written a book. Which can be found here:

UT announced on Instagram two JUCO signings today, both from Iowa Western, both Kenyans. On the women's side:

Faith Linga, who was national JUCO runner of the year in 2019. and according to this page:
https://www.goreivers.com/sports/wxc/201...1114gpxafu
she ran the 2nd fastest JUCO time ever at nationals. The time on that site appears to be wrong. Seems she ran 16:49 in the 5k, not 19:49. Her 2020 times not nearly as fast.

On the men's side:
Kassim Kibet, who finished 3rd in that same 2019 nationals at 24:05 for the 8k.

The program has had varied success with Kenyans at Toledo over the years. We had the debacle back in the 80s with a major NCAA violation involving Kenyans in the men's program. Since then the program has had some very fast (I believe one of the women was All-American in early 2000s) and some very slow. The issue seems to be their ability to run in the cold weather.

Looking like Friday March 5 will be a rare winter cross country meet at Ottawa Park so we should see how they run in the cold and tough conditions.

Petronela Simiuc ran a 4:13 in the 1500 at the West Coast Relays, with was a big PR and qualifies her for the NCAA regionals. 14th best time in the country so far.

Rockets in 5th after Day 1 of the MAC championships.

Took 1st & 3rd in the Steeple, with Semra Karaslan winning the event.
Took 2nd and 5th in the 10K

Expect day 2 points in the 800, 1500, 5K, 400H and heptathlon. Maybe the high jump. But, with no throwers on the roster this season, and no competitive sprinters, hard to challenge for the team championship.

Rockets finish 5th. Reportedly the 82 points scored is the highest by a UT team since 2012.

Petronela Simiuc won both the 800 and 1500, setting a new UT record in the 800.

Freshman Emily Vining, who finished 3rd in the Steeple and 4th in the 5K, won MAC Freshman of the Year.

UT has 6 qualifiers for the East Regional.

Simiuc (1500, 6th best time in the east)
Sherman (5K & 10K)
Kabina (400H)
Karaslan (Steeple)
E. Vining (Steeple)

Vining is just a freshman. Unsure why Simiuc didn't also qualify in the 800, as it looked like her MAC final time was good enough to make it.

Apparently Simiuc did qualify in the 800 as well, but turned it down to focus on the 1500.

Nice BCSN story. East regionals start tomorrow, with the 1500 prelims and the 10K.

Stephanie Sherman is going to nationals in the 10K!
Finished 11th, with a time of 34:08.86 That's a 17 second PB, and if I am reading the records right, 2nd fastest time in UT history behind Emma Kertesz.

In other results, Yana Khabina finished 6th in her heat and 30th overall in the 400H.

RE: UT XC, Track and Field: 2020-21
Found this story from the UT site last fall on Stephanie Sherman. Grad student in bioengineering. All kinds of accolades. And now running in the NCAA finals. What an impressive young lady. She hasn't gotten remotely the publicity as some of the best UT runners in recent years (Fisher, Kertesz, Noe, Simiuc to name a few.) The article also seems to indicate she has another year of eligibility, if she wants it.
