Conference standings (Week 9): 3, 4, or 5 potential top 25 teams?
.

Week 9 standings (pending the results of the Navy-SMU game):

.

1) Cincy 3-0 (5-0) #7 AP (week 8)
2) Tulsa 3-0 (3-1) #28 AP (week 8)
3) SMU 3-1 (6-1) #22 AP (week 8)
4) Houston 2-1 (2-2) #46 (CBS Sports, week 8)
5) UCF 3-2 (4-2) #37 (CBS Sports, week 8)
5) Navy 3-2 (3-4) #88 (CBS Sports, week 8)
7) Memphis 2-2 (3-2) #26 AP (week 8)
8) Temple 1-3 (1-3)
9) ECU 1-3 (1-4)
10) Tulane 1-4 (3-4)
11) USF 0-4 (1-5)

...................................................................................................

Cincinnati strengthened its resume for the CFP rankings and could move up a notch due to #6 Oklahoma State's loss.

SMU seems likely to move up a notch or two, after scoring 51 points after the first quarter vs. Navy.

Tulsa is well within reach of making it into the top 25.

Memphis still has a shot at top 25 status, despite losing to #7 Cincinnati.

UCF will, no doubt, move up in the rankings after an impressive road win.

...................................................................................................

Tier 1: Cincy, SMU, Tulsa, UCF, & Memphis

Tier 2: Houston & Navy

Tier 3: Temple, Tulane, ECU, & USF

RE: Conference standings (Week 9): 3, 4, or 5 potential top 25 teams?
All in all, it was a pretty good week for the AAC, although a couple of teams may take a hit in the rankings.

Cincy could move up a notch or two, due to Oklahoma State's loss and Georgia's narrow 14-3 win over Kentucky. They're getting very close to a potential CFP invitation, although they're currently #10 in the Massey Composite.

SMU could move up a notch or two, because #15 UNC and #18 PSU both lost.

Memphis, Tulsa, and UCF continue to remain in contention for a finish in the AP Top 25, and the conference should be able to have at least 5 teams in bowl games, with 37 bowls still being scheduled.

Navy played well enough, for much of the game against a ranked opponent, to show that they're a potential bowl team. They will host Tulsa and Memphis before traveling to USF and concluding their season in the Army-Navy classic. After the way Tulsa struggled vs. ECU at home, Navy may be favored against the GH. That, and a win over USF, would get them to 5 wins.

At 3-4, Tulane also has a shot at bowl eligibility, though they will face some tough competition (@ ECU, vs. Army, @ Tulsa, and vs. Memphis).

Is there even such a thing as "bowl eligibility" this season?

Not trying to be a smartass or anything, but I thought the "Bowl Eligible" rule was pretty much dropped this season.

You may be right. However, there have been some announcements about bowl eligibility, such as the recent announcement that Army (6-1) will play in the Independence Bowl.

I just found this online, which suggests that 37 bowl games are still scheduled, which would be enough bowls for ~ 70+ teams:

No bowl eligibility number due to uneven number of games played. Not even a requirement to have a winning record.

Ok - we've been updated.

Perhaps that means that it some G5 teams with winning records will be bumped aside by P5 teams with losing records.

That would be the most convenient arrangement from the standpoint of the P5. No wonder they chose to use the pandemic as an excuse to eliminate bowl eligibility.

That's certainly a possibility that a P5 with a losing record could bump a non-P5 with a winning record.

But I do think conference ties still come into play. The P5 aren't giving those up, so I doubt it will be a giant issue, other than teams with losing records can theoretically go to bowls.
