One of the disappointments of the season was the cancellation of the Stanford game. I think we were the first FCS opponent on their schedule.

Stanford just announced a 2022 game with Colgate. Hopefully we can book out later.

Maybe we were the first east coast FCS team, but they've played FCS teams before, albeit not super frequently.

They've played UC Davis a few times, and I saw Sacramento St on their schedule once.

RE: Stanford
Who knows if there was a clause that guaranteed a later game if the 2020 game was cancelled. Certainly nobody
on the board.

RE: Stanford
There was such a clause with the Georgia game of 1988...originally set for three or four years earlier. UGA had to cancel the original
date but a clause in the contract guaranteed a later game and it was rescheduled.

That game, interestingly enough, was the largest guaranteed money for a big money game ever for W&M. John Randolph
told me we received $406,000 for it.

Stanford would've paid us $625,000

For comparison:
Florida Atlantic would've paid Stony Brook $400,000.
Northern Illinois would've paid Rhode Island $400,00
NC State would've paid Delaware $475,000.
UNC would've paid JMU $500,000.

I would expect most contracts of that nature would include a clause like that. The job of the attorneys is to think in advance “what might possibly go wrong?” Apart from pandemics, lots of other things could conceivably happen to cancel a game — extreme weather, earthquake, wildfires, civil unrest, etc.

Stanford's next opening, for a FCS opponent, is 2025. They are scheduled to play Colgate, for some reason, in a couple years.

BTW, we play UVA in 2021 and 2023.

I'll be happy for those UVA payouts, but that Stanford payout was much more than I think we'd get from an ACC school. An AD to AD gift to Huge from her old boss.

PAC pays much more across the board. It's good to be Sacramento State or Cal Poly. Cha-ching every season.

ODU would've paid Hampton $190,000 to bus 22 miles. Not a bad deal but it would've been the lowest payout in 2020.

RE: Stanford
I wonder how much of the increased payout is from travel costs. With ~80 some players + coaches, airfare and hotels for a game @ Stanford could cost us maybe 40k more than a game @ UVA?

Sac St to Washington would've been the same payout.

The only significant difference in cost is the aircraft charter (regardless where you travel there are still hotel costs, meals, and busses) and round trip to the west coast is more than a $40k difference. The charter alone would be in the neighborhood of $125k-$150k.

(Assuming a charter as opposed to airline - which has been the norm for FB for decades now)

Post COVID I don't see any West Coast trips in our future. Spring sports have been told they will have no overnight travel and almost no games/matches outside the State.

Do we use hotels for games @ UVA? I'd also think Stanford could require 2 nights at a hotel instead of just 1, but that depends on the travel plan.

Unless something has changed in the last several years, hotels are used for all trips except Richmond and Hampton, so yes to UVA. We even used to stay in a hotel in Norfolk when playing in the Oyster Bowl at Foreman Field.

Also good point - west coast trip may have dictated two nights to simply adjust to time zone. With the charter though, team could have conceivably flown back as a red eye.

Good point - and for Richmond and Hampton games, Williamsburg hotels were used.
