For members of the major conferences PAC 8/10, SWC, Big 6/7/8, Big Ten, SEC, SoCon/ACC your goal was to win the conference and go to the XXXXX Bowl.
For the major independents, their goal was to win enough games to get invited to one of the prestigious bowls.
If you got voted National Champs by a major poll that was a feather in your cap.
Now that it’s decided on the field, first through a bowl system that ensured #1 played #2 and now through a 4 team playoff, it’s all about being in a prestigious, high dollar earning conference.
This shuffling of conference membership has unfortunately killed a lot of great old rivalries.
Very good point about the effect of the new postseason.

RE: Denver Post: Colorado and Nebraska messed up. Big time.
Nebraska was allied with Texas in the Big 12 unequal money sharing agreement. They just left the Big 12 because there was the possibility they’d be totally left holding the bag if Missouri went to the Big 10 and 6 Big 12 teams joined the PAC. Then, after they left the Big 12, they pretended like they had been against the unequal sharing agreement, in order to justify their move. The Nebraska-Texas fights in the Big 12 office are a silly fiction.
With that being said, I can’t imagine Nebraska going back to the Big 12 at this point.
