Marshall Extends A Scholarship Offer...
To Cole Pennington who is Chad’s son. Chad is coaching Sayre High School in Lexington, KY and has them at 7-0 and into the playoffs with Cole as the starting qb. Hopefully, we get him. He looks and passes just like his dad.

I feel the same way watching what Arch Manning is doing as a sophomore at Newman. They say he’s already better than Peyton or Eli at this point in his development, which is quite crazy to think about. Being in the athletic program at UT in the 90s I got to know Peyton pretty well. Although I was in a different sport, some of us used to run routes for Peyton in the off-season. I remember before they ever played a game in the summer of 94 he and Brandon Stewart were always throwing inside the indoor facility and being on the receiving end of both I thought damn this Stewart kid throws a better ball than Peyton. I didn’t know then what I know now about the reality of that situation. Brandon transferred to Texas A&M the following year.

Also, Pennington being from Knoxville and playing around the same time and basically playing the same years had quite the cult following in the area even with Peyton in town. He was probably my favorite “other” QB to watch back in the day. I hope you guys get the kid. Good for the league.

I live in Lexington. Sayer is classically an academic institution, this is actually their first year of varsity football.

Cole Pennington is leading Sayer to a pretty good start, I think the only team that could potentially take him from us would be the University of Kentucky.

Considering Chad now lives in Lexington, that might be the only one. However, we might actually get to keep this commitment considering Lexington and Huntington are so close.

I think the biggest determining factor is Cole made his commitment before the season. Grant Wells has shown to be quite the future I'm afraid that could lead him to look around other programs. But I can tell you this, I know that Cole and Chad were both honored for Marshall to offer his first commitment.

Cole is just a JR though and is in the class of 2022. With a RS year this would put Grant and Cole 3 years apart. I know this year doesn't count as a year of eligibility but I don't expect most of the kids to actually stay an extra year, if we get a few that want to stay then great. Also in 3 more years if Grant has any chance at being drafted I think he has to take it.

Sayer is similar to the HS that Chad went to in Webb School of Knoxville. They are both small and have focused more on the academics. If I had to compare them to someone in the state of WV it would be like St Joe's in Huntington or Notre Dame in Clarksburg.

Like Grant, I don't expect Cole to be recruited that hard. Coaches will look at the competition he is playing against and try and find higher rated QBs. The only reason someone may look at him is because he is Chad's son. I would much rather take a chance on Cole who ESPN, 247 and Rivals will probably never rate than a 3 or 4 star QB I know nothing about. Knowing that Chad is is dad you know the following 1)Cole will be nothing but respectful on and off the field, 2)His work ethic will be relentless , 3)His Football IQ will be through the roof and 4)He will lay everything on the line each and every time.

Doc usually takes 1 sometimes 2 QBs in each class. And it looks like Doc already has 1QB for 2021:

Cam Fancher 6'2 190 Wayne HS, Dayton OH

I think you're right Zoned. Cole will be a perfect Marshall QB.

Boy, would we be lucky if we roll right off of a recently NFL drafted Grant Wells to a redshirt freshman Pennington lineage.

It's just like reliving the glory days of 90's to early 2000's era Marshall!

If Cole moves on, it's because another P5 or Ivy league program offers (The Sayer School has amazing academics).

By the way, Chad Pennington is the Director of Football at The Sayre School here in Lexington.

It's their first season, and they've yet to lose a game.

Now that I know all that, maybe I'll pay up that $30,000 tuition for my kids to go....

With four girls, that's $120,000 per year. I'll just start a go fund me!

Grant was never even looked at as a serious recruit from Dana Holgorsen, even though he camped up there all 4 years of HS. Ive been told by more than 1 that Holgorsen hated to take WV players, especially so called "Legacy Players".

When Dana left for Houston at the beginning of Dec 2018 and Neil Brown came in, from what I understand the 1st 3 weeks Brown was in Morgantown was spent trying to flip Grant. Grant finally told him "Ive been right here for 4 years and not a single contact from WVU, what makes you think that I would want to play there now".

I didn't need this to love Grant Wells anymore than I already have.

But man, local kid, head on straight, fire in his belly. It's crazy that we were this lucky to land Grant Wells, and have Chad Pennington on our side.
