USM AD: new FB coach/staff will be paid top-5 most in CUSA
Per USM AD Jeremy McClain in Patrick Magee's article,

"My plan is that we’re resourced in a way where we can be in the top few in the conference. I’ll say the top five in Conference USA. That doesn’t mean just the head coach’s salary. That’s just one piece. You also have the assistant coaches’ budget and you want to make sure you’re resourced in the right way."

Apparently, since Hop's resignation there's been a lot of boosters stepping up and a lot of fan investment/Tix/eagleclub donations etc. This is all SUPER encouraging. Based on this, we should expect USM to be paying in the 900k-1mil range.

For reference, the five highest-paid coaches in C-USA all make north of $900,000, according to a USA Today database:

1. Seth Littrell, North Texas — $1.85 million.
2. Bill Clark, UAB — $1.5 million.
3. Mike Bloomgren, Rice — $1.33 million.
4. Butch Davis, FIU — $1.04 million.
5. Rick Stockstill, Middle Tennessee — $912,504.

Based on results, only 1 of them is worth the amount being paid.

Historically, USM has done more with less better than anyone. If there's anyone who could benefit from an influx (and continued increase) of fan investment and subsequent paying more for coaches, it's Southern Miss.

Knowing how much we will pay is huge in terms of the job's attractiveness and the higher quality of coaches interested. As McClain mentioned in the article, there's been a lot of interest thus far.

Rice is paying their coach 1.3 Million?

Geez, we pay Blake half of that and most everyone universally agreed that's too much.

Sounds like Walden is out then. He can be had for less than $1M/year. I like his enthusiasm though, sometimes that can be the difference in a W and an L.

That's what I gathered as well. We're 1-4...but oddly enough, with LT's 2 conference losses, we now control our own destiny.

When are schools going to learn its not about the money in G5 hiring. Well unless you can afford 2.5 to 3.5 million a year.

The best hire any school can make is a former PROVEN head coach that needs redemption. Hire one and not only are you getting the head coach but his contacts also. There's a lot of old/good coaches around that makes very good asst coaches. So maybe you can land a great staff on the "come"...

looking for a higher pay day as the head coach moves back up the ranks of the P5.

So like that head coach that is looking to rebuild their name, will work cheaper, to do just that. Good asst coaches that might not work for what all of us can afford to pay...for a firsttime head coach who's star is just starting out. But they will hitch their wagon to that coach that had the big pay day and looking to move back up in the next couple years.

At Western, WT had a great staff (great recruiters)for the money they were being paid. Same thing with BP and the same thing with Brohm. All of them willing to make less for the hope of making a lot more in 2 to 3 years. That first time hot shot doesnt have those connections.

Western found that out with Boy Idiot who hired mostly lower division coaches for his staff. Helton is basically the same way. The same thing took place at S. Miss these past 4 years.

There's only a few homerun almost sure things a CUSA team can hire. Like Western did with BP and FAU did. FIU went with a old retread coach that had already passed his best years and not the head coach that needed to repair their name.

Western had the chance to go after Huge Freeze and passed on it. Someone I trust told me a rep of Freeze contacted Western about the job. Western's AD told them they were not interested, they had their coach...took 2 days from Boy Idiot's firing for Westerns AD to make another stupid hire.

Screw any bad press and go with that hot coach that needs redemption....winning and competing for conference makes all that bad press, national press. Work to your advantage when you win...people already know about you.

S. Miss better take that almost sure thing if their someone out there...even if they turned the hire down a year ago.

It all depends on the school and prospective coaching candidates. Every school is different...as you said, sometimes it might be best to hire an ex coach who's looking for redemption. We tried that with Art Briles and our University Prez nixed it. And conversely, sometimes it's better for an up and coming coordinator who's looking for their first HC position at the FBS level. That worked out for us real well: Bower, Fedora, Monken.

I made the same comment on the USM board.

I'm hearing we made Freeze an offer and he politely turned it down. He was interested early, but at 6-0 he likely feels like he'll have his choice of P5 jobs by the end of 2021 at the latest. CCU's HC would be a win.

This is great news. I honestly believe that for C-USA to improve as a football conference we have to raise our game and hire and keep better coaches. I'd love to help Southern Miss achieve this goal..... You guys want to take Littrell off our hands? 03-tired

The funny thing is, we still couldn't afford him, especially with a buyout. Y'all are screwed!
