If we want to throw the ball against, Memphis we probably can. Just don’t choke.

The problem was we went away from that once we had a lead. I was begging the radio to hear a pass play on first down for several possessions in a row. When we finally threw it on first down, it went for a good gain and then the running play that followed was also effective.

True, we can probably live with some incompletions against Memphis but ill afford to put the ball in the Tigers' hands repeatedly with interceptions, expecting our defense to pitch a shutout each time.

I believe Memphis has much better personnel than SMU and this one will be a cat fight down to the wire.

RE: Memphis Tigers Game
At SMU, the Bearcats ran a new offense, the Run Pass Option.
The RPO starts after the ball is snapped and the QB reads a LB on which way the LB is going.
The UC QB can:
Keep the ball
Hand off the ball
Pass the ball
Run the ball. Yeah, like a 91 yard TD.
To do run the offense, the offense needs a physical, strong QB runner like Ridder.
Bryant can probably run the RPO.
After some more practice, Evan Prater will run the offense.
When Coach Fickell came to UC in 2017, he wanted to run the RPO because he brought
in a Buckeye RPO QB Torrance Gibson, but Gibson didn't qualify to enter UC.
Bearcat alum Urban Meyer (Psych) invented the RPO at Utah when the Utes ran a play and
his WR missed his block. This "Urban Legend" just might be true.
Gator Tim Tebow ran the RPO against the Bearcats in the 2010 Sugar Bowl.
Coach Meyer replaced Coach Fickell as Buckeyes HC but kept Coach Fickell on as a successful
DC.
The Bearcats also have a new OLine. 2018 recruit and new LG starter Dylan O’Quinn is literally
LT James Hudson's neighbor. O'Quinn was a SDE at Millbury Lake (OH) HS (just to the east of Hudson's Toledo OH home) but was recruited as a TE to the Bearcats after a commitment to WMU. O'Quinn is 6-4 307.

Jake Renfro is a true freshman starting C from a Chicago suburb Homer Glen in New Lenox, IL. Jake's goal was to play for Illinois because his father Mike played OL for Illinois in the early 1980s. Renfro was recruited as a 6-5 255 TE but is now 6-3 302 and is a good long snapper. Renfro graduated from Mokena (Ill) Providence Catholic HS.
Both O'Quinn and Renfro are athletic and strong and each played TE in HS.
The RPO changes the blocking techniques of the OL. With the RPO, the OL each fire forward
on every play to block the DL/LB, because the OL doesn't know what the QB is going to do with the ball, run or pass.
The Bearcats 2nd half RPO offense was fantastic. The Bearcat offensive coaches are doing a great job. Several NFL teams such as the Chiefs, Patriots, and Eagles run a version of the RPO. Having the the right QB makes all the difference.
The Bearcats 2020 offense just got a lot more exciting.
Bearcats 27 Memphis 17.

The Smu game was not the first time we've used Rpo under Fickell. They may have used it more, but they've used it previously.

RE: Memphis Tigers Game
It seems like the RPO has become one of the hotter new concepts the last decade or so. I believe Joe Brady made it the staple of his historic offense last year at LSU. I noticed the Bengals stealing some concepts from it as well with Burrow.

Excellent post. To me, your information further supports that Fickell and company are recruiting to an offensive design specification and are building the program on a solid foundation. I like your score prediction too.

This is a good thing to have against a pass heavy offense...right?

I wonder how PFF grades these for a 3-3-5 defense that is generating pressure but not a ton of sacks.

CFBS preview of the game looks at how the teams matchup and players to watch.

Cincinnati defense just shut down an explosive offense last week and will look to double up this week.

Covering a ******* punt when our punter rarely has anyone do anything but raise their hand and signal fair catch.

I’m sorry but it is silly having a guy like him on the punt coverage team.

The third phase of the game...and can be just as important as the other 2. McClelland isn't a starter and coach wants skilled, good players on Special Teams too. I don't have a problem with him being out there and I bet McClelland doesn't have a problem with it either. Stinks it happened again but let's hope his recovery is quick.

There are 20 guys down the roster who could do what he did on the punt coverage team. Now he’s gone for another year and a position group that is a little thin just got a whole lot thinner. I thought it was silly in real time during the game thread when I saw him out there on that punt. Thought it was stupid as hell when he was being carried off the field with a blown knee.
