He's still got a long way to go to be anywhere near the first round of the draft IMO. And that's not an indictment of him. He's got the requisite length and he's a good shooter, but I just don't know how an evaluator could look at him right now and think he's quick enough laterally to defend at a high level or good enough with the ball. Doesn't mean he can't eventually be good enough to develop into somebody who could be drafted. But mocking him in the first round at this point seems a bit too far.

Murphy isn't even starting for Virginia. He's off to a good start, scoring wise, and seems to have regained a bit of his shooting touch that he demonstrated as a freshman (his shooting percentages went down as a sophomore), but I find it hard to believe he could get drafted if he doesn't even start for UVA. Maybe if he keeps shooting well, they move him into the starting lineup?
Speaking of that, I'm a bit surprised to see Drew Peterson starting for USC (and his numbers aren't bad either). Josh Parrish hasn't played yet for USD, and QMB started for Vandy in their first game but didn't score any points (and now their season is on hold too due to Covid).
But again, let's focus on the guys who are playing for Rice. So far, the transfers we have playing for Rice in 2020-21 look just fine. Travis Evee probably will be the best transfer scorer we've had since Egor Koulechov.

Not sure why you're surprised about Peterson starting for USC. Though he didn't get the press, largely because he was so unselfish offensively, IMO he was without question our best all-around player and MVP least season. Superb defensively with his length and a good rebounder, he was the primary distributor for us in the half court offense, and could score both outside and inside.

Peterson also got into a shooting slump during the season didn't he? Or was that his freshman season?
Anyways, it's a shame about those guys, but this team looks a little better than expected, so maybe it won't be as big a step back as we feared.

It was his Freshman season when he slumped badly offensively after the first several encouraging games. Last year he was solid throughout, but VERY unselfish.
So far this season it's clear that Fiedler is the most improved player on the floor-- both in terms of offensive production (though almost all his baskets are bunnies set up by good passing) and rebounding...and he's not getting into the immediate foul trouble he did his Freshman season. Great to see Mullins return to his Freshman form on offense, when he showed so much promise. And it was good to see Olivari have a strong outside shooting game yesterday.
I think our offense will be fine this year. The issue is going to be defense, especially against teams with inside strength.
