Women's Basketball Players Opt out of Season
Libby Underwood and POY candidate Eva Hodgson have opted out of this season citing fears from Covid.

Well that's a huge deal. At this point I think I'd rather just cancel the season.

Yeah, what's the point in playing. Cancel MBB, too.[Image: 3178063fca6e88837c81589d9fa2a38a.jpg]

RE: Women's Basketball Players Opt out of Season
I respect her (their) decision. I hope that the year off isn't the first step towards Eva transferring. I know that sitting out a year after transferring will no longer be required but, even so, sitting out for the year may lead her to conclude that she wants her third (and/or fourth) year of eligibility to be somewhere else. If she played this year at W&M then odds would be better that she would simply play out all her eligibility here.

I know Hodgson loves W&M, but IMO, it wouldn't be a stretch for her to transfer to her hometown UConn Huskies. If I'm not mistaken, the storied women's program is about an hour and a half from her hometown.

I think we can't afford to play without fans. Cancel everything until paying fans can return.

RE: Women's Basketball Players Opt out of Season
Eva's bio says that she wants to get a masters in education or business. A free masters degree using that fifth year wouldn't be a bad idea. With all of the spikes in the virus we may not play as many games as we hope for. Underwood is a senior and rarely plays so who knows what it means for her.

Is she THAT good? I know that she is from New Hampshire and her sister will be a freshman player at Maine next season.

Dunno if she's UConn level but I have heard whispers that she's considering transferring up. Stay tuned.

Edit: To add to that, she's set to graduate this spring in three years, but of course would have two years of eligibility left.

Yes, she’s THAT good. Was top 10 in the country in scoring last season. This is a substantial loss for WM, but I wholeheartedly agree with players exercising their right to opt out.

RE: Women's Basketball Players Opt out of Season
This year's women's team had a real chance to win the CAA Championship until this.

And ODU also had two players opt out yesterday as reported by Daily Press.

I just put UConn out there as an example. She doesn't need to be UConn's go-to option to be a player that they would absolutely love to have on their roster. As a sophomore, she was 1st team all-CAA. She was top 10 in the country in scoring. She was the only player in the country to average 50% from the field, 40% from 3-point range, and 90% from the free-throw line. She is a walking bucket. You are entitled to your opinion, but I'm pretty sure that there isn't a women's program in the country that wouldn't want her as a transfer with 2 years of eligibility. She doesn't need to be a star at UConn to bring value to their roster.

Based on you expert analysis within 18 hrs, because you knew nothing about her yesterday. Go get me a Reds lobster roll...butter, not mayo.

I see it as we recruited a stud who gave us a couple great years (or more). Nice problem to have.

Exactly this. In fact, with the rule changes that are being pushed, if Coach Fischer & Swanson are doing their jobs and bringing in great recruits, this will be more and more the norm. The system is being altered to encourage this. IMO, holding on to a senior year Nate Knight or Marcus Thornton will be more the odd exception than the norm.
