hopefully the school is opting out of the scholarship then, especially since the athletic department appears to have no money.

Booting one of your campus’ best athletes off scholarship for choosing to opt-out would be a bold move. I suspect that won’t even be entertained as an option. I certainly understand the basic logic, but that decision would have consequences that far outweigh the scholarship cost savings.

That is not how it's been done during Covid. Schools have been honoring athletes scholarships. I'm pretty sure interim AD Martin doesn't want the negative publicity associated with snatching a players scholarship.

Pull a scholarship from the best athlete on campus because she's concerned about her well-being. No chance.

Yeah, not even a chance that would happen. What kind of recruiting message would that send?

It says you got a scholarship to do X so if you aren't doing X then the school will give the money to someone that does do X.

BTW I know it won't happen because it "looks bad".

of course, we have done plenty of other things recently that "look bad" so maybe everything is on the table.

It says "we don't care about you as a person." Especially right now, it's important to show athletes we care about them whenever we can. Given that there was a recent outbreak that resulted in the athletic facilities getting shut down, this is not an unreasonable decision on her part.

Some people out there will scream “personal responsibility” out of one side of their mouth while simultaneously condemning others who exercise personal responsibility in a different way than they prefer.

Did you write the bolded part with a straight face? just curious. :)

I agree it is a reasonable decision. I'm just saying if you are receiving $50k (or whatever ridiculous price it costs to go to W&M as an out of state student now) a year to do X and you decide not to do X, then it is also reasonable to not get $50k.

just to be clear, I think everyone should make the decisions that are best for them, which includes an analysis of the consequences. Obviously if there are no consequences then it is what it is. I would also opt to not go to my job and keep receiving my salary if the option was given to me. 04-cheers

Sounds like you agree with Eva & Libby’s choice!

The athletic department is trying hard right now to distance themselves from the culture that was pervasive under Huge. Every decision matters, especially ones that would be high profile like this one.

Genuine question, did W&M have a stated policy for honoring scholarships in the event of an opt-out? I know the pro sports leagues worked out deals with their player unions. I thought I remembered something NCAA-related that specified opting out without losing your scholarship was an option. If that's the case, then it's not really a W&M decision anyway.

I found it: http://www.ncaa.org/about/resources/medi...ligibility

"All student-athletes must be allowed to opt out of participation due to concerns about contracting COVID-19. If a college athlete chooses to opt out, that individual’s athletics scholarship commitment must be honored by the college or university."

Oh snap! Didn’t realize the NCAA was mandating it.

In conclusion, what was soccer talking about re: consequences for athletes opting out??

thanks. good info.

I still think there should be consequences but looks like W&M doesn't have a choice.

But does this mean the schools HAVE to fund the scholarship an additional year or simply cover the opt out year?

Generally, it is an agreement to cover 4 years though it is reexamined yearly.
No scholarship is going to get pulled. The ball is completely in her court. She will sit a year and come back or sit the year and transfer. She may even transfer the following year or leave the following season as a grad transfer.

C'mon. 75% of our teams are already fighting mad. We're not going to stop supporting our star athlete on one of our notable programs and risk moving the upset needle to 85%.

Why do players opt out? Because Justin Turner.

If these players have a change of mind, can they come back and play? Just wondering as Pfizer announced that its covid19 vaccine is more than 90% effective.

Doubtful young healthy college students will be getting a vaccine any time soon, IMO
