(WMSB Tweet) On honoring Tony Shaver:

“Tony Shaver is among the finest human beings walking the face of the Earth...I hope there is a moment in which we can celebrate his legacy and all he accomplished here and what he means to our community."

I believe that several times during the discussion Amy Sebring and Chelsea Burk mentioned a video they were about to release with further information on finances.

I can't find the video so I can't tell whether I made that up or I'm simply looking in the wrong places for the video.

Here is the video. Uploaded about 30 minutes ago....

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DnEAdDKEas8&t=29s

Doesn't really show anything new that we haven't seen before in other presentations or online "conversations" the Athletic Department has conducted. What it doesn't lay out - which would be nice to see if being "fully transparent" - is the expenses that have contributed to the decline in reserves, etc. Such as new field, scoreboard(?), and track at Zable, repainting of the Kaplan floor two years ago, increase in staff salaries and number of high level positions (Asst. ADs, etc.) that have been brought in. Basically a delta - if one exists - for staff, and upgrade expenses. While it was apparent that there was a decline in donations over the last few years, I have yet to see anything showing a change in spending habits to parallel the decline. Intuitively it seems as though spending increased exponentially (but I have no data to back that assumption up).

RE: Shared Path Forward...
I have trouble believing that our financial crunch is a result of runaway spending. I will ignore for now the distinctions between operating and capital shortfalls because I simply haven't seen anything that allows a layman to understand if we have a shortfall in one area or both.

1) Our operating revenue has been obliterated in 2020 and it's not clear how quickly it will recover.
2) Some of the improvements being questioned (new scoreboard at Zable, Kaplan renovation) seem to me to be absolutely minimal investments in the only sports that provide any sort of enhanced future revenue stream. (As a MBB fan, I know we failed to make the investments in that sport that would given us an equal playing field with our conference mates.)
3) Clearly the compbination of the Shaver firing and the tax law changes have really put a dent in our athletic contributions.

We could fire tomorrow every occupant of any new position created by the last AD and it wouldn't change this logic at all.

I did not support the Shaver firing. I was heartbroken by the cutting of the 7 sports.

I don't want to seem preachy here but in the end I have to decide if I am going to participate in a donor strike that will devastate W&M Athletics or do I continue my giving (big to me, small to the institution) in the hopes we can pull out of this.

Since when are we getting a new scoreboard at Zable? I agree the old one was getting quite archaic, but hadn't seen any news on its replacement.

Would be interested in seeing the replacement, if it's even up or still planned to go up.

Thought maybe I was imagining I'd read that, hence the question mark, but here is a post about it:

RE: Shared Path Forward...
As mentioned above, the new scoreboard has been installed along with the
new track and field turf. We have a terrific facility now.
But will we have fully funded football and track teams to match our facilities?
From my perspective, I will be very disappointed if football does not get sufficient resources to compete for the CAA championship.
Stop this talk about the Patriot, and any discussion of the Big South and D3 is profane.
