Just finished tonight's information session and my confidence in Jeremy Martin continues to grow.

See the link in post 18. It works for replay, too.

I have a soft spot for anyone who fondly remembers Tribe fans taking over the building for that final in Baltimore against NE.

Shared Path Forward...
Gist of the talk:

20men needs 29women to balance

35men needs 50women to balance

Can't just expand women's rosters - each spot needs to be meaningful & provide equity in competition. Quality matters.

May expand women's sports teams but that requires time & money. Running at a $2mil deficit per year now.

Option to enroll closer to 50/50 men and women but W&M enrolls the most talented and doesn't base acceptance on sex.

Committed to D1 experience. Football & Basketball are fan's sports of interest accounting for 92% ticket sales.

No interest in reducing rosters because that would make us less competitive.

Martin understands we can't satisfy everyone.

W&M depends on donors (20% of budget) and will strive to show appreciation for donorship investments. Must build trust.

I'm convinced a combo of Martin & Milne are perfect to get us back on track

RE: Shared Path Forward...
He said several other interesting things, too:

At the 9:30 mark of the presentation Martin put up a slide and talked to it. The chart says (italics theirs) "2021-2022 Participants if the suspensions remain in place" and Martin also said "if the suspensions of the men's teams are upheld". That is two uses of the word "if" and also the word "suspension" (not the word "elimination", for example) and the word "upheld" (as in, who makes the decision on whether to "uphold" the original decision?). Absolutely makes it sound like these drops are not necessarily "final".

At the 18:02 mark Martin says "my role is to review the decision, not to come up with a new one". That is not what was said when the uproar first started and W&M promised to have moderated, in-depth discussions with many stakeholders in order to "determine the way ahead". Now he has dug in and is defending ("reviewing") the original decision without even looking for a new, presumably better, way out. That also contradicts the "if" factor mentioned above; that is, if you are not looking for a new way then there is no "if".

Speaking of moderated sessions, today's was now the second time that the constituents were promised a moderated session but did not receive one. Instead we get just Martin answering some carefully pre-selected questions. It makes it look like Martin is afraid to take questions that aren't pre-selected; afraid that his answers won't stand up to live rebuttal.

Martin saying this is absolute BS !! It makes it sound like every applicant is assigned a score based on their qualifications and that W&M blindly accepts the top 1500 (or so) applicants. Bulls**t! First off, so much of the process is subjective (what extracurricular activities did Applicant 1 have? What was the GPA of Applicant 2 from a rotten school system where he was Valedictorian versus Applicant 3 from a top-notch Governor's school that was hard and had lower GPAs? Isn't it true that W&M does not even use the SAT anymore because it discriminates against minorities? Etc. Etc. Secondly, we all know that the Administration has "goals" for in-state vs out-of-state, for a diverse student body, for a certain number of overseas scholars, for a certain number of special athletes, for any number of categories including sex (they certainly wouldn't admit 80% of one sex (would they?)). So admitting more men for one year is not discrimination, it is attaining the right balance in the student body. If anything, since it is a fact that women have been admitted at a much higher level for the last decade, then admitting more men next year is nothing more than a correction for past discriminatory practices. Anyway, Martin, don't insult anybody's intelligence by saying that W&M doesn't do anything but admit the absolute top candidates.

I can see why the folks who are football superfans (or basketball) would love the guy -- he is protecting their sports and any funds saved from eliminating "lesser" sports just means more money for their teams. But folks who like a broad-based sports platform see that Martin is not answering the tough questions, he is not doing it interactively with his opponents, and his demeanor is smug and arrogant (as are many of his canned answers).

Thought he was forthright and made lots of sense. And he has a calming presence at all the sometimes overblown
rhetoric and impossible wishes.

Sure there are more questions to be replied to, but give the guy time.

Zorch, he is Iterim AD, so his current role is to protect against a lawsuit and put a bandage on the troubles. It is not his duty to examine whether or not to reinstate the Cut 7 (or 4). That's our new AD's responsibility. How would it look if he reinstated everything and the new AD reversed the decision?

Let's consider what Martin is up against, how he must tread lightly, and give him a chance. My hope is he is hired as AD and Milne is hired as his #2.

Yes, he is the interim AD --- but no announcement has been made about how long the interim term will be. Presumably it will be until a new permanent AD is hired. No one knows when that will be although it almost certainly will not be until after the end of the current academic year. That is a long time away and, as Martin himself has said, these cut sports need to know sooner than that if they are going to be able to recruit and sign committed athletes. So, I maintain that, as long as his title contains the words "Athletic Director", that it is his duty to fix anything that he can during his tenure. How would it look if he allowed these sports to lapse and then a new AD stated "that's too bad but now that they're gone it is too difficult to bring them back"? You say "give him a chance". I am giving him a chance and, so far, he is failing to live up to expectations. He is not brand new off the street; he has been in the 'Burg for more than a decade. He should know the constituency a lot better than he has shown so far.

Zorch, the part that you may be overlooking is how Rowe is going about this. She wants to make decisions in phases. We are in phase 2 and are trying to confirm the identity that we want to have and the direction that we want to go. I think both of those things are critical to identify what we are looking for in an AD and quite frankly who will be interested in the job.

State how, exactly, he is failing 3 weeks after Rowe thrust him into a totally new position. He brought back female teams in an effort to thwart a lawsuit. He's held a number of public discussions and is honestly & ethically working with our stakeholders. To my knowledge, he's working to stabilize our budget as much as he can and he has provided an exact picture of where we stand, financially, and provided a number of potential options to get us even.

Ha ha, failing?

The uses of the words "if", "suspensions", and "upheld" (as noted in my post above) indicate to me that they have NOT progressed out of phase 1 yet. Thousands of Tribe7 supporters are still working on that assumption. You notice Martin is not using the word "final" anymore ....

Sounds like some has or had a son or daughter who participates(d) in a cut 7 sport. Reads like unreasonable expectations so soon and strikes me as personal.

He's failing because he's not doing it exactly how Zorch wants him to. Rash decisions are ok, as long as they are the ones Zorch wants.
