I don’t understand. We will need a play-by-play man regardless. A mindless decision!

Maybe to save money they will use students.

I will miss Ty

RE: Thanks Ty Linder
Well, the rumor making its way around KSU that Joel will get a job at Villanova might have been wishful thinking.

He's been trying to wiggle his way into the mix for jobs, though. According to an old source from my days as a reporter, his salary has made him a difficult hire...and then there's that pesky little reputation.

I have no doubt that Ty will find a great new job and that his career will take off. He is great at what he does, and he has lots of people who are champing at the bit to tell potential employers about what kind of person he is.

Assuming Villanova is not true, this is a good time for me to stop hoping for good news about the direction of Kent State Athletics. I have to just trust Joel will eventually get what he deserves, and accept the fact that those of us who have tried to tell our stories about the guy will never get anyone with power at the university to care. I'll start caring about Kent State again when Joel is finally gone.

Caring about Kent State has just worn me out.

This is the best post on this topic. Ty and David are guys I consider friends. And I have spoken to Ty. No doubt he is disappointed. Most of us are disappointed for him, because he is a great guy. But let's not put this all on Joel. 2020 has been funky. Tens of millions have lost their jobs. Joel was given the unenviable task of slashing a hell of a lot of money from the payroll because of COVID and the changing of the budget. Anyone who has owned a business or has P&L responsibilities at their job understands this predicament. It's not fun. Actually, it downright sucks. Joel took a paycut (as did several other coaches that I have read) and at 10% it may have been equivalent to what they were paying Ty. IDK the specifics. Regardless, it sucks and as I stated, I am disappointed.

That said, I cannot defend how it happened. But I cannot prosecute either. IDK. Ty didn't tell me much of anything as he is too classy to do so. I didn't pry. We spoke briefly on what's next and I just wanted him to know I was in his corner. If you are anti-Joel, that's fine, but I would be surprised if this was something that was on his radar before he was instructed to slash spending (and keep all these teams going).

2020 has been a long sh*tty year. Let's get to 2021 together as Flash fans and see what it will bring.

Well said. If you have to cut an athletic budget what else can you cut besides people and teams (people by another name). Anything else is round off error. Having been in the position there is no good way to lay people off. Of course you don’t have to be an ass when you do it but it never is pretty. I’ve done it the same way (as best I could) and two people can react totally different. It’s such an emotional moment it just doesn’t always go well.

I agree with you Burden, except for one thing... I know Joel Nielsen, and I am certain most of those layoffs were not an emotional moment for him. He has never demonstrated that he cares about anyone. If he cared about Ty, he would have demonstrated in some way that he cared. A simple thank you for your service might have been nice.

Not so sure about that. I’ve heard rumors they are dumping the whole radio operation. It’s a shame because Kent really pioneered the industry (or at least the MAC) with radio broadcasts of football and men and women’s basketball like everyone else. But our volleyball, wrestling, gymnastics, baseball and softball teams all had events broadcast live. And if I’m not mistaken Dave, didn’t you guys also do a weekly golf radio show for a while?

How do you just eliminate all that? Better yet, how are the coaches okay with it?

Hi Jim,
We did do a semi-weekly golf show on the radio, alternating with Herb and Rob Wakeling in a three-person discussion with Ty and me. As someone who loves the game of golf and has loved my time with the Kent State Men's and Women's golf teams, it was one of my favorite periods of my time in the athletic department.
It is true that Kent State did not renew its iHeartRadio contract.
iHeart's Keith Kennedy posted a very nice farewell to Ty on Twitter today, writing:
"It was our pleasure to have you on the air, Ty. Like so many KSU fans, we will miss your knowledge & love of the game when the audio is moved behind a paywall. KSU is now the only DIV 1 school with no broadcast over the air to listen in the car or backyard on Saturday."

You don't know how Joel felt. Saying so is ridiculous. Some people cry at funerals and others don't. Doesn't mean they are hurting less. On the outside, Joel may not show much emotion, but to say he doesn't care and/or it doesn't bother him is laughable. There is also more to it than you are willing to give Joel credit for. We can talk about that offline if you want.

Maybe, to be fair, I should have said "I'm pretty damned certain" or "I don't believe for a second..."

I know Joel, and he has never demonstrated he cares about anyone else. It's not about showing emotion. It's about empathy. People capable of empathy don't joke about the attempted murder of the sister of an employee during a senior staff meeting... or about another staff member's house burning down. The examples are endless, and witnessed by many.

I would love to see you hold Joel accountable the way that you have tried to hold coaches accountable in the past... But for some reason you have a love for Joel that he doesn't deserve.

You have always been a fair guy, but I think you have a blind spot when it comes to Joel.

I've been in the same room with him during several difficult situations, and I have a pretty good idea of how he would have handled this... and my belief is reflected in the way he is coming up on several months with the opportunity to reach out to Ty since he was let go, and hasn't been bothered.

Happy to talk to you offline, and you have a right to your opinion.

I have never seen Joel show any genuine empathy for ANYONE.

I'll tell you what... if you can find one person who has ever worked for Joel to say anything nice about him... next time I see you, golf AND dinner are my treat! Your choice of course. Your choice of restaurant.

I can think of only two redeeming qualities that I see in Joel... he appears to be a very good husband and a very loving father. Other than that, I can't think of one thing I admire in the man.

Knowing Joel, I'm sure he would love to drag me and many others into court for some of the things we've said about him... but fortunately, truth is an absolute defense against libel.

Anyway, call me any time. I'd love to catch up.

Earlier David said, "Caring about Kent State has just worn me out". Yes, caring about Kent State can be exhausting, and I've cared for 57 years. I, too, am worn out.

I feel KSU sports have succeeded in spite of itself & the university. As evidenced by the state of the facilities, marketing (lack there of), less than impressive PR, non-existent alumni relations, etc.

And yet, KSU athletics continue to attract quality D1 student athletes, produce all-Americans (both athletically & scholastically), achieve team success that few other MAC schools (or even the big schools) have achieved, be successful at the professional level, allow former athletes to be successful at the coaching & administration level, retain quality coaching, and so on.

And now in 2020, I won't be able to listen Golden Flashes' games on the internet here in Philly with KSU announcers. Will have to listen to the opponent's announcing staff. Maybe they will be a little conciliatory knowing that they will have a KSU audience in addition to their own school's.

Oh well, time for Happy Hour...

So that comment about it being moved behind a paywall... Let me get this straight... There probably won't be fans allowed at games. Also they dropped iheartradio and we'll have to pay for something to be able to listen/watch. And they devalued the experience of what we'll be paying for by getting rid of the experienced knowledgeable play by play guy? I don't know jacked s#!t about Neilsen personally so I have no dog in that fight. And I realize that these are tough times and tough decisions need to be made. But this really seems like a bad string of business decisions that are just going to result in losing part of an already small fan base. And with the problems Kent's had in attracting fans, good luck getting them back.

I think that’s part of the story, as it’s a tough time in life right now and people know tough decisions need to be made. I’m sure employees everywhere, including KSU, are sitting there thinking of inevitable cuts and working out the math in their heads and may feel vulnerable. Getting the axe is probably expected by many people. But the bigger part is what Dave brings out, and much of it is a pattern long before the pandemic. Looking back over the years think of the many people that bled the school colors, took less money to work for their school, took more pride in their duties than the paycheck dictated, constantly did the proverbial “more with less” while we had substandard facilities and budgets and every program was budgeted at the bottom of the MAC yet the emperor was by far the most compensated AD in the conference. Coaches always negotiate the pool allocated to their vastly underpaid assistants, yet Joel looked out for nobody but himself. How many came back to our school to get started in coaching or whatever at under market salaries just out of pride and then left for other programs that saw the value in them? And when it comes time to axe somebody just a little humanity or empathy isn’t too much to ask for. I think we could find as many people that have something good to say about Joel as we could people saying something bad about Laing - NONE - and it’s a damn shame.

This seems pretty ridiculous to not have any radio presence. Ty was also the announcer on ESPN+. Our first game is on ESPN+ and we have a student running it?
I'm sick of Joel and his salary getting no results. Luckily he fell into the right football coach after his other choices turned him down.

I'd love to write a letter to the president or AD, but I'd get the canned response of "times are tough now, COVID, budget crunch, etc.. All of which are good. The fact that I can turn on a well broadcasted network and listen to an OSU game, but won't be able to listen to the team 15 minutes away is mind blowing. Plus the fact that we had a guy that naturally liked Kent State instead of someone being paid to like to Kent State.

Embarrassing for the Flashes to still have Ty's bio on the current Staff Directory of kentstatesports.com with the following opening line:

"Ty Linder enters his 11th season as the “Voice of the Flashes” in 2020-2021."

Conference games are required, certainly. I’m Not sure about non-conference Basketball.

They can hire freelance announcers. Dave Wilson, who broadcasts the women’s basketball games, s not an employee of KSU.
