PTH on Ricefootballnet injured reserve list
After 22 straight years of attending 10 to 12 Rice football games a year, trundling up and down the sidelines, this old geezer has got to ease up on the foot-feed a bit during this truncated season.

A more-than-irritating bout of bursitis in the hip means no running up and down the sidelines, at least for a few weeks.

The problematical situation which ordains as few people on the sideline as possible dovetails appropriately with circumstances, however.

The plan is that DSE will continue to shoot mucho still photos at every game where we can gain a field presence...or, if fan attendance becomes allowed and permission is secured, do some shooting from the lower stands with his long lens Nikon gear. They'll be posted en masse at his photo site, with a few good'ns also on Ricefootball.net each week.

Once permitted, I'll park in the stands and actually be able to watch the game like a regular old ball fan...a luxury, indeed, especially if we win a few.

Chuck's crew has the postgamers well under control at home, and usually on the road as well, so we won't try to reinvent the wheel there. David may do some video work; depends on what restrictions allow.

We'll still do a 50s-style chronological game writeup at every game we get to see.

But primarily, the plan this season is to serve as a Media Aggregator, giving Owl fans one-stop shopping for as many links to game, pregame and postgame coverage, both print and video, as we can dig out (having acquired, over the years by osmosis, a smattering of the skills of that master of linkery, Almadenmike).

David and I urge one and all to patronize Matthew Bartlett's excellent At the Roost blog, both in front of and behind the paywall, if possible.

Then once again next season, we should be back to normal...if the rest of the world is....

Paul, First of all, I want to thank you for all the wonderful work and insights that you have provided to us over the past many years. I probably would not still be the Rice fan I am now without your efforts.

Secondly, I have had (and still have) bursitis in the hip and have had injections that really helped and still do. I hope your situation is the same as mine and you can take advantage of a shot (or two).

Speaking for many Owls, your work over the years has been invaluable and if you ever think it is time to "retire", feel free to do so. You have earned the right!

(And many thanks for the rental of the house in Camden. That was the best family vacation we ever had!)

Thanks. A lot of water has passed under the bridge since the days of that house on High Street in Camden. I’ll email you and catch you up, in exchange for any words to the wise you might have about the bursitis. And yes, I got an injection on Monday and it’s helped considerably, with one nagging remaining issue that I will share with you.

IR, but absolutely not DNP. Your efforts have been amazing over these years and we all owe you a debt as Rice fans. Your health and well-being is primary and any choices you need to make we all support. Even doing what you suggest is miles more than most of us.

Thank you for doing what you do!

I wish you could. My two anticipated go-to guys, Winston and Clanton, both appear to be unavailable. Tommy, I’m told, has moved to Vail where he can ski and do orthopedics on other skiers. Meanwhile Leland, I understand, has mostly retired to his place up in North Carolina. So my MD brother is the team urologist for the San Antonio Spurs, and he hooked me up with his buddy, the team orthopedist for the Spurs. Tall cotton, but it’s a literal pain to have to drive a couple hundred miles practically, just to get a shot.

I am pretty sure he is in The Woodlands.

He was my roommate at Rice for a year. He is very good. Just never was quite as good as me. I do have a few good stories about him as well.

He certainly drops more things than you do... which is why it works well that he now has a team behind him to count his tools after he's done. You wouldn't need that

To fill in the back story for those interested...
Kevin was one of the football athletic trainers. He liked to hang out around the cool players, like Ham. I do remember watching Ham throw the ball around with Kevin one day. I thought Kevin was going to hurt himself. His ball catching and route running skills were down right scary.

Pinpoint when he kicked the pass. 04-cheers

If I remember correctly, Ham and myself were off kicking FGs. Kevin and another AT, Owen Dry (who was about 5-2) talked Ham into throwing to them. They then ran routes against a real football player. Then the two of them tried (emphasis on tried) to cover a real player. Ham completed 100% of those passes. Of course, pinpoint for those throws was anywhere in that quadrant of the field.

Yep... Throwing to RU was like throwing hand grenades. Close was good enough.

So, you were an excellent passer whenever you were throwing to a guy who caught everything?

Did you ever try a pass on a fake?

I actually was pretty good, even on the run in both directions. I had a lot of time on the sidelines where we played time consuming games requiring pinpoint passing... The problem was distance. Oddly enough, while I could kick the ball a long way, my typical punts were only between 35 and 40 yards (without roll). I would have RULED the 'rugby kick' world, if that had been a thing back then... I never kicked ONE more than 45 yards in the air.... similarly, I never had much of an arm. I could throw a baseball a long way, but not a football. Small hands, lol. I'm guessing now, but 35 yards was about my max. Given that I'd be 5 yards behind the LOS and then factoring in the width of the field (where a 10 yard 'out' pattern takes a 35 yard pass) and I'm pretty limited.... but your typical sand-lot football? I was the KING.

Oddly, I never was asked to practice a fake that I recall, other than my rather famous 'trip over the yard-line' onside kick where I believe I was nominated for an Oscar, but the award went to the guy who hid himself in the end-zone logo.

I was always disappointed that we never tried a fake with Jack Fox, HS QB.
