Who will be W&M’s next AD? 5 Names to Consider
We're probably still a ways off from W&M making this decision, but it's fun to think about anyway.

We've compiled 5 names W&M should consider when the school is ready to make the move in the article below.

Did we miss anyone? Who else would be a prime candidate? Curious to hear folks' thoughts on this.

Milne & Martin are the only two I'd like to see in the running.

Henderson? Geesh.

Jim Booz or Scott Sidwell are external options.

As before, Milne would be an excellent choice. A young one too.

Henderson? Serious?
Martin? Minimal athletic experience and no athletic administrative experience! Will be a good interim, but lack global experience to great a vision for the department.
Milne a young and interesting candidate.
Albert is a long shot who really has been on autopilot since stepping down from soccer coaching.
Steve Cole has the institutional knowledge, loyal and sustained vision for the department.
Outside candidate? Shaney Fink Seattle Univ., Lynn Hickey East Washington, Steve Waterfield Oakland Univ, Mark Benson Albany

Shaney Fink is an interesting possibility, but would she want to change coasts? Benson is known as a good fund raiser (including his time at ODU). That certainly will be important for the next AD.

Martin is a politician. However, if he can figure out how to comply with Title IX AND retain swimming and outdoor track then I might change my mind.

Call me a chauvinist but I wouldn't want a woman in the role as long as we also have a woman President. No problem with a woman in either role but having one in each role just doesn't balance for me.

Wow. Do you worry about universities where there’s a male president and a male AD? I’m a big fan of judging people by their merits.

Boy do I feel old, I thought it was just a few years ago when I saw him play so well against the Tar Holes in Chapel Hill. I will never forgive the Holes or the refs for that egregious ruffing the passer no call on the play where his career was ended.

He has done a lot since leaving the 'Burg.

I think it is going to be critical to rebuild some of the ties to William and Mary and Tribe Athletics. If we go with an outsider, hopfully they bring in some people with ties to the school, especially in the development office.

Al Albert wouldn't want it, Shalcross is in an industry that isn't much like the NCAA environment, Milne probably makes more than Huge was making, Henderson isn't the right fit given tenure and lack of success in his current job, leaving Martin who is probably not going to be the replacement. He's the one who fits the best.

I like the Paulus idea a lot. Someone like that may fit right in.

As someone who overlapped with Mike Paulus in undergrad, I wouldn't vote Mike Paulus.

Who will be W&M’s next AD? 5 Names to Consider
The coming years are going to be a real challenge for any AD that comes in. While a love and understanding of W&M is a great asset, I'd opt for someone with real experience, someone with established people skills, and someone with an understanding of financing and fund raising at the mid major level. We are far too vulnerable at this point and can't afford a popularity hire. We can't have another miss.

Yeah.. this is why when Milne came up, as much as I would LOVE to have him come back, I suggested him (or someone like him) may be great as the "2nd in charge". Get your W&M ties with key staff that support the AD and get someone with experience as the AD.

Agree with this. Hiring someone just because, or primarily because, they are a W&M alum isn't a good idea. It has to be someone with a lot of experience running an athletic department. Who knows if anyone with that type of experience wants to come to W&M after what just happened.

I definitely agree with you but from the outside looking in I don't know why someone with that skillset would take the job. It's unfair but not inaccurate to describe WM as "a school without a national profile in the middle of a budget crisis whose fanbase just ran off their previous AD." I don't know who would step in to that situation unless they had a lot of WM love.

We will probably get a promising up-and-coming assistant AD from another school. I'm not sure that we can compete financially. It would have to be someone up for a challenge that is eyes open on the complexities that come with a job like William & Mary. I can't imagine that there won't be plenty of interest. There are only so many D1 positions available and I'm sure many in the field aspire to run their own department. Easier said than done, but again, we just need to hire the right guy/gal.
