Deep enough to reignite the Huge haters of 3/2019 and ignite the Huge haters of 9/2020. Like two large streams colliding to make a river.

I think it's fair to say that the boiling anger of our swimming community, with their established organizational skills & outreach, absolutely directly led to her dismissal. Yes, Huge did it to herself, but our swimming community forced action against her. Title IV was a legal excuse and plagiarism was an ethical excuse employed to fuel their effort.

In most ways it's a chicken-or-egg discussion, but which one you pick can contribute to how you shape the narrative.

Either it's

"W&M has a horrible, hostile, unrealistic, and overly powerful fan base (especially the swim parents) who drove out an athletic director who was making good decisions for the good of the university (even if her implementation wasn't perfect). No sane person would ever want to take the AD job there. Even P5 fans don't hold a candle to the awful mob that you'd have to deal with in Williamsburg."

or it's

"Ms. Huge was such a disaster in terms of her implementation of even good ideas that it aroused W&M's normally docile fan base (especially the swim parents) to look at publicly available information and discover some of the mistakes and ethical lapses that occurred and point them out. Someone with more ethics and interpersonal skills will have a mess to clean up initially, but will be treated fairly by the W&M community. There are many qualified candidates interested in being a D1 AD who will recognize this and be interested."

and the truth may lie somewhere in between.

It reminds me a lot of the "nobody will want to coach basketball here after the way Shaver was treated" comments that some were making 18 months (or so) ago. I think it's commonly understood (whether correct or not) that some of the perceived top candidates may in fact have backed away for whatever reason, but other qualified coaches were eager to make the jump to leading a D1 program. Of that group, Huge & Co. seem to have chosen a good one in Dane Fischer.

May we have a similar outcome in the AD search.

(P.S. - I love Zorch's Yogi Berra reference!)

No body got Huge fired other than Huge.

Think about it, forcing out an icon after 39 years.

Totally botching the unnecessary firing of the basketball coach of 16 years who had elevated the program from the absolute pits to sustained respectability, on the verge of having his most talented and experienced squad, managing to trigger 5 years of severance payments (at a school that kept the coach with the worst record in D1 thru a 5 year contract rather than pay him severance) .

As a former P5 asst. AD for compliance, managed to trigger Title IX law suit threats in a supposed action to bring us into compliance by abolishing our most successful sports, along with our one most unsuccessful sport that continually drained $1mm more or less from the budget in the name of compliance and sustained excellence. Elevating a women's club sport with lots of participants (crew) to varsity status, but not scholarships would have been a better move us toward compliance.

Getting rid of everyone she could that had success at W&M to solidify her power base.

It was not the swim parents, although they were the catalyst, it was Huge herself.

Check with the athletes of the sports with coaching changes and see what they think about the moves. Not sure I’ve seen a post consider that other than early hoops discussions about transfers. Wonder what the athletes here feel.

Henderson? Serious?
Martin? Minimal athletic experience and no athletic administrative experience! Will be a good interim, but lack global experience to great a vision for the department.
Milne a young and interesting candidate.
Albert is a long shot who really has been on autopilot since stepping down from soccer coaching.
Steve Cole has the institutional knowledge, loyal and sustained vision for the department.
Outside candidate? Shaney Fink Seattle Univ., Lynn Hickey East Washington, Steve Waterfield Oakland Univ, Mark Benson Albany

We need a fundraiser. Benson at UAlbany is that guy. Former assistant AD at ODU for a long time dealing with fundraising. Knows the CAA. Knows the area.

Current ADs who have, apparently, done very well:

Earl Hilton (NC A&T)

Kery Davis (Howard)

Well, we know Davis and Coach London already have a relationship. Kery Davis hired him at Howard.

How many more of our teams would go on strike if we hired an AD that was tied to our football coach?

Any future AD worth their salt will have a very close relationship with the football and basketball programs

and the AD won't try to overshadow them.

I don't think our programs should determine who we hire as AD. The workforce, for lack of a better term, doesn't hire the company president or CEO.

He would be our first black AD so there's that. By all reports, he's done a great job at Howard, he has dealt with terrible publicized controversy, and he appears younger & energized.

Oh, I'm not saying it isn't a good idea. I was asking a legitimate question. The women's track 'letter' all but said their bodies were being used so we could have football. We seem to be excessively willing to entertain any such claim at this point so I wonder, again, would we ever hire someone friendly with our football coach?

That said, we have a robust women's athletics program BECAUSE of football, not in spite of it. I am amazed at the numbers of people (even on this board) that don't get that. And, no, I'm not saying football foots the bill.
