An interesting thought.

Budget friendly, knowledge of program, institution and supporters. Probably driven to right the wrongs of the past administration.

Does he have the right skill set?

A lifelong basketball coach with no experience beyond high school of running an athletics department? Perhaps I'm wrong, but doesn't seem like a competent hire to me.

I think we should consider this guy. Undergrad and law school at W&M. Tons of high level experience at Dartmouth (including overseeing football). Current DIII AD but good fundraising experience. Works awhile at the college in compliance.

Seems like a really good fit.

Call me a chauvinist but I wouldn't want a woman in the role as long as we also have a woman President. No problem with a woman in either role but having one in each role just doesn't balance for me.

Wow. Do you worry about universities where there’s a male president and a male AD? I’m a big fan of judging people by their merits.

I can’t wait to see his response to this question.

Anticipating just such responses, I did preface my post by saying that you could call me a chauvinist.

While I wouldn't advocate for this hire, I will say that there have been successful transitions from coach to AD before, but I think there was a lot of continuity in those cases. Thinking Valvano, Fulmer, etc.

Not sure he is ready for the crap that he will have shoveled onto his plate, but he seems like a solid choice.

I think you are exactly right. No one we bring on as AD will be ready for what is thrown at them day 1. I think the key is finding someone that can guide through the muck as honest and open as possible. Some won't be happy with the decisions he makes. Priority one is establishing trust and rebuilding those bridges to people that care about making W&M the great place we know it should be. Bringing in Milne as assistant AD would be a great move, though if this guy is hired, I'd imagine he has his own guys that he's come up with that he trusts.

If you think the W&M environment is bad then you need to check out the vitriol that is spewed out at Power 5 schools. This would be a cakewalk for anyone actually experienced in what goes on in the SEC or Big 12 (to name just two).

I thought some of the complaints with Huge were that she was trying to run the W&M athletic department like it was a P5 school and wasn't sensative enough to the way sports are done here. Bringing in a new P5 AD might easily shrug off the controversy, but would be more likely to do things like Huge did... With hopefully better people skills.

I think we'll look at PL Athletic Directors. W&M would be a step up in prestige & competition and a PL AD would get our goals.

Maybe the Asst AD at Miami of Ohio type.

You misunderstood what I was saying. I am not in favor of bringing in a P5 AD. I was responding to this line: "No one we bring on as AD will be ready for what is thrown at them day 1". What I was saying is that someone from P5 would be ready for whatever the Tribe fans could throw at him/her because it would be nothing like what the P5 fans do. That does not mean that I am in favor of a P5 AD.

I think the Naval Academy does a GREAT job understanding the "point" of the athletics department and channeling their efforts and resources appropriately. They face a lot of unique challenges, which I think is also true for W&M. And they've very successfully navigated the treacherous waters of conference realignment.

I don't know who under Chet Gladchuk -- the man who once nearly hired away Jimmye to BC -- might be a fit, but I'd give his lieutenants a serious look. I see that Deputy Director of Athletics / Administration Robb Dunn spent six years at W&M as Assistant Athletic Director for Facilities & Operations and later Associate Athletic Director for Internal Operations. Does anyone remember him?

Seriously? Swim parents got Huge fired. Think about that for a second. You really think it is worse at a Power 5? Laugh entirely out loud.

Huge got Huge fired. Even her staunchest defenders, who like her overall decision making, have made it clear that they have no stomach for defending the way the cuts were handled.

Her staunchest defenders would say NOTHING about what she did if not for the uproar by swim parents/alums. Let's be honest here. Most people just did not care. But nobody can say that without backlash. I'm not saying Huge didn't make the mistakes that led to her downfall. I'm simply saying that most people didn't get wound up about it until the burning pitchforks started flying. And I dare say that many of those that hated her because of Shaver and Laycock merely used the sports cuts to bring about what they've always wanted to happen...run her off. And it worked. Many of those same people would like to just move forward now with her cuts in place. Not happening. The worms are out of the can. Which takes me back to my point...Power 5 schools have nothing on us where it comes to variables making this a crappy situation to walk into.

"Most people just did not care. But nobody can say that without backlash."

Uh, if most people did not care then why would there be any backlash?

"...most people didn't get wound up about it until the burning pitchforks started flying."

Uh, if most people weren't wound up then who was setting fire to the pitchforks?

This reminds me of one of Yogi Berra's lines: "Nobody goes to that place anymore. It's too crowded."

You are wrong about P5 schools. Read their boards sometime. They would have tarred and feathered her and run her out on a rail if she had pissed off a P5 constituency like she did here. She probably would have been in real danger of being physically attacked. A very small percentage of those people are real whackos (but it only takes a very small percentage). At W&M it took three years and at least two major mistakes for a high enough percentage of fans to finally tip the balance.

By the way, what is your problem with swimming? A definite anti-swimming current runs through your posts.

It's very accurate to say that a lot of people wanted her out after firing Shaver. Problem there is that she broke no rule in dismissing a coach. It's also very accurate to say that cutting 7 programs, namely swimming, hit many people at a very deep & personal level. Deep enough to reignite the Huge haters of 3/2019 and ignite the Huge haters of 9/2020. Like two large streams colliding to make a river.

I think it's fair to say that the boiling anger of our swimming community, with their established organizational skills & outreach, absolutely directly led to her dismissal. Yes, Huge did it to herself, but our swimming community forced action against her. Title IV was a legal excuse and plagiarism was an ethical excuse employed to fuel their effort.
