2020-21 Bowl Season
I have to wonder how many bowls there will be following this season. I fully expect we’ll have the Playoff bowls and the New Year’s 6 bowl games, but what about the smaller bowls? How can they make money if they can’t sell tickets?

Do we expect there to be a Liberty Bowl football game if they are only allowed to sell 10,500 tickets? I expect we’ll see a number of these smaller bowls cancelled this year, since the bowls can’t require the participating teams to buy 20K tickets each if the stadiums are only allowed to seat 10K fans due to social distancing requirements.

Another weird twist is that the NCAA has voted to suspend the requirement that bowl teams have to have winning records. That means that the Music City Bowl (if they don’t cancel it), could invite 2-6 Tennessee to play, while 6-2 Memphis sits at home because they cancelled the Birmingham Bowl.

It’s gonna be a strange year, folks....

TV still needs to fill slot and ESPN owns bunch of the smaller ones. They may lift some of the alignment restrictions and go with more regional matchups with lower payouts. Schools that ant afford to go say no go.

Anything to nothing is on the table this year.

That brings up an interesting predicament.... Let’s say that we lose one more game along the way, either at Cincinnati, or in the AAC title game.
That knocks us out of the Peach Bowl, and into a smaller bowl... the Boca Raton bowl, for instance.

The Athletic Dept just laid off a number of folks and cut salaries. We lose money on these minor bowls anyway, and this year, the bowl payout is reduced. How can we, or any other team justify spending money to go to a bowl game when we just had job layoffs?

I’m sure we’re not the only schools that would face circumstances like this.

Navy won the Liberty Bowl last year. No peach the Liberty Bowl should invite the Tigers and the next closest team. Treat it like any other away game, but give the players better swag. Same advice for every bowl out of the Invitational tournament and the ny6.

Those games are not about the TV money they are about the tourist dollar.
