2021 Access Bowl - Peach
Watching the weekend’s games, it seems to me like the stage is being set for BYU to get the G5 Access bowl bid and go to the Peach Bowl. They were #12 in last week’s the AP poll before winning Friday night @ Houston. Since all of their P5 opponents have opted out of playing them, BYU’s win at Houston Friday night was probably the last decent opponent left on their schedule.

Cincinnati is #9 in last wee’s poll, and SMU was #16. They play each other this coming Saturday, so one of them will drop. The winner of that game still had to play an AAC schedule, and an AAC championship game.

The way the ESPN announcers were “gushing” over BYU & their QB, it sure seems like the stage is being set for BYU to play in Atlanta. Tiger fans, I believe the Peach Bowl is wishful thinking this year.

I didn't think they were eligible since they can't be a conference champion.

I think you are correct. Their best hope is to be an at large, but they don’t get the G5 slot.

I guess that is what you get when you think you better than everyone else.

They aren't eligible. We have a clear path to the AAC Championship game if we can beat Cincinnati, and also take care of Navy and Houston. If we run the table, our conference mates are going to knock one another out. I'm not particularly scared of Marshall or any of the other G5 champions going undefeated and being ranked ahead of us.

It's right there in front of us IF we can manage to beat Cincinnati.

You are the guy that gave up on the season BEFORE the game yesterday. Par for the course coming from you.

I have been hearing the ESPN narrative all year about BYU. I've heard more than one of the ESPN guys say "BYU is probably the best G5 team". It appears they are looking to create a loophole for BYU.

But the spot goes to the highest ranked “G5 Champion”. They don’t play a conference championship because they are not in a conference. They are in the same boat as Notre Dame most years (except for this one, where Notre Dame is “in” the ACC.)

If by some miracle BYU gets enough votes they can be in the playoff the same as Notre Dame. Like Notre Dame, they can never get the G5 spot.

I too was taken aback by the post at first, but I think he’s referring to BYU thinking they’re better than everyone else. :-)

I was going to make an NY6 thread, but no need to now. You've said what I would have said. SMU lost two key guys against us for the rest of the season. So they may have trouble staying undefeated. Tulsa is the only other concern IMO since we don't play them, but can they put a strong season together?

I think the other G5 conference winners will be punished for SoS even if they do go undefeated.

Yeah...That is just Stammers...

Always on 100...

Simple to see that BYU didn't want to join a conference because they felt they were better than any of the options.

This is one of the reasons why there is no tournament. The talking heads love the power they have choosing a national champion much more than having a team actually win it.

I know and agree. (Except not sure about the ND part. I think they have a standing agreement with the ACC for access to certain bowls.)
There's also a rule that says you have to have 6 wins to be in a bowl game, and it's being waived this year.
I'm just saying, ESPN seems to be putting pressure in this direction. And since rules are being rewritten this year...
