No one’s denying the fact. We’re arguing that it doesn’t necessarily mean what you, apparently, think it means. Would you feel better if we had scheduled and beaten Vandy last year? More importantly, to your core argument, would the college football world have sat up and taken notice if we had?

My core argument? It's not an argument, it's a fact. Don't turn a simple point into an argumentative discussion. UAB hasn't beaten a good or bad P5 team in 16 years. There are other G5 programs that have beaten good and bad P5 teams in the last 16 years; UAB is not one of those teams. Sixteen years is a long time. That's my core argument and more of just an observation.

And for those that keep saying should we be impress about a win over Kansas or Vandy; UAB is 0-4 vs Kansas and 0-2 vs Vanderbilt.

An “argument” doesn’t mean you’re arguing. It’s a debate term. Your position, point, idea, opinion.

How do you make a fact a debate, an opinion, or an idea? Fact is UAB hasn't beaten a P5 team in 16 years. This can't be argue, debated, and it's not an opinion.

Now if you want to argue, debate, or give an opinion that you don't believe 16 years is a long time than so be it.

You aren't wrong in that it's an actual fact. I still believe you are overlooking that not all P5 wins are created equal. We have played Miami, Tennessee, Texas A&M and Florida in recent years. Miami was the only one of those games not played in that weird week late in the season. I prefer we stay healthy and compete for the west in those situations, and absolutely hate when we play those games during that week. We have Georgia and LSU coming up next, and I don't have a lot of faith in our chances there either.

We had terrible coaching before that time, so I don't even really care about those games. Had we beaten a P5 under McGee, I wouldn't put a ton of stock in it, because more than anything I'd consider that a fluke.

I'm not thrilled that we haven't won a top 25 game, or a P5 game in quite some time, but there are circumstances surrounding this situation that aren't always equal. I'd also like to point out the Kansas teams of the late 90's/early 2000's weren't great, but they also weren't the same as the Kansas teams today.

My guess at this point is we play one money game a year, and we want it to be a big pay day. If we wanted to get a Kansas or Syracuse or another perennial bottom feeder, we would probably have to schedule a second buy game to make the money work. Would we prefer that as fans?

Here's the meat of the issue. It is a fact we haven't beaten a P5 in a long minute. Teams of our ilk who have beaten a P5 tend to have a scalp on the wall from the likes of Syracuse or a Kansas, or get lucky and catch an LSU in a down year. We play these teams to get the big paycheck, which we need. We aren't playing the scrubs. So, our hope is that we catch lightening in a bottle. I think we could beat LSU this year, in the middle of their rebuilding. But, as luck would have it, we get them in two years, when they likely will have a championship caliber team again. Maybe we want to start looking for a home&home against a lower tier P5. I wouldn't be opposed to it. Then we'll have a better opportunity for a P5 win.

Aren’t you trying to make a point based on a fact(s)? If you just came to the board to post that we haven’t beaten a P5 team in 16 yrs well, um, ok. You could have posted that and locked the thread. Or not. But you use that fact to point to a conclusion, or you have over the course of the thread at least. Facts don’t necessarily, and very rarely do, project the same conclusion (ipso facto and all that jazz).

Well, it is 2020. Now more than ever (to be cliché), the lines between fact and opinion have become a little fuzzy.

And before peoples' heads begin to explode, I'm just trying to add some levity and be a little cheeky. Relax.

WTF dude?

1. I asked a question.
2. Found the info on my own and another poster answer my question.
3. Another poster made an assumption that was incorrect but I responded anyway.

Not every thread has to be posted to make a point. The AP and Coaches Poll threads are started to inform others. I asked a question, it got answered. Lou A-B started with the Liberty win this weekend and made and assumed that is why I asked the question about UAB last win over a P5 team. The assumption was incorrect but no big deal but posters started voicing their opinions off Lou A-B's assumption.

The fact I am even having to explain this is silly. I bet you make going to bed at night a challenging task...lol.

RE: When is the last time UAB Football beat a P5 opponent?
We had Kentucky scheduled during one of the shut down years, and that was a beatable Kentucky team. Our AD has to make the matchups that he can, and that takes two teams who are looking for a matchup on the same date and are willing. I suspect the P5 bottom feeders are not in a hurry to schedule teams that appear to have a shot at beating them. After all, the point of a P5 playing a G5 is to pay someone to occupy a body bag and fatten their Win column.

Let's be honest - through the Callaway and McGee years it didn't much matter, because we were unlikely to beat them. The 2010 2OT UT game was our best shot at it, and we should have won that one. All we can do is continue to get better and recruit a little higher up the food chain. We'll get another P5 pelt, but it will happen when it happens. I'm not fatalistic about it, but I am realistic. It'll come, but no way any of us can guess when.

Yeah, it'll come. Somewhere in the critical path as a side project:

1. Raise $$ (check...and ongoing)
2. Build facilities (check...and ongoing)
3. Win conference (check)
4. Build donor base (in progress)
5. DOMINATE conference
6. Raise more $$
7. Humbly accept invite to another conference
8. Win new conference
9. Build more donor base
10. DOMINATE new conference
11. Raise more $$
12. ???
13. Profit

Maybe when we're up and running in the new stadium, the increased revenue will allow us to dial down the money game to a bottom tier P5 team or try to get some P5 H/H's.

It should help, but I suspect we'll still do it, both for the check and for recruiting visibility.

people still talk about beating LSU. other than when it happened I have never heard the Mississippi State win brought up by non UAB fans. Beating the P5 lower tier does not have a lasting effect.

Well that was a Nick Saban coached team so you know some UAB fans are going to always put that win at the top of the P5 wins list. But the Mississippi State win with Hackney and Roddy was probably to most impressive P5 win imo. There was never a doubt that UAB was going to win that game.

Matter of fact, some of the most impressive wins by UAB have come under Watson Brown. I still have fond memories of the win over then #17 ranked ECU and the Hackney-Godzilla stiff arm game against TCU.

Without a doubt, the logo on the side of the helmet means as much as anything. It isn't like we beat the 2019 LSU team, but it resonates because it was still LSU. Beating Miss. St. or Baylor just isn't as sexy.

The Bulldog fans we spoke with before that game were convinced we were going to beat them. That was a dark time for Mississippi St.

A full Tiger Stadium made it much more memorable for me. I was also in Starkville in 2004 and it was maybe 2/3 full. Rough time for State so even the cow bells were half-hearted. State fans around us were not surprised to lose that game. The LSU fans on the other hand dog-cussed us when Gallego's kick went through the uprights. Guy right behind me holding a toddler went full George Carlin on me. Never been in a crowd like that day. Cussed at before, during, and after the game, just for having the oppposition's colors on.

Surreal listening to Saban's post game show driving back that night. Pretty sure the very next game LSU benched Josh Booty and started turning things around.

That 2000 game at LSU was their Homecoming game and they wore the purple jerseys. Saban changed QBs for the Tenn game the next Sat and LSU won every SEC game the rest of that season and then went on to win the National Championship a season or two later. UAB was their sole OOC home loss for almost 20 years. That makes it pretty special. (Also recall that Saban lost to UL Monroe in his first season at Bama before winning a NC) The "bloom" came off quickly when UAB was humiliated a couple of games later in Louisiana.
