I would think w/ all its big cities like Toledo, Cleveland, Columbus, Dayton, & Cincinnati, the populations in those big cities would cancel out the areas that'd be more conservative?
PA-Historically unions, same for MI, and Wisconsin and Minny got a lot of German immigrants that had more of a socialist mindset, same for the NW Washington/Oregon. Other parts of the USA Germans much more conservative.

That has changed quite a bit since one I have in a book from 1980. The "Black belt" in the south is more than twice as wide. Before much of that area was English or American. And the Scandavian patches in Minnesota and the Dakotas are much smaller. Mexicans has of course, expanded north.

Ohio is mostly Midland speech. In Cleveland and the far north, it is Yankee speech like Michigan. Its just a different culture.

This is an amusing piece on linguistic differences. Doesn't show the Yankee/Midland/Highland Southern/Coastal Southern split, but shows a lot of differences on words.
