So many comments....

Dukeman's ears must be ringing.

If true - Alger, wtf?

Hard to believe Alger has already been here for 8 years. I guess that's about right.

Never been crazy about Alger, since "Why Madison" campaign.

We could have some major issues I was not aware of.

Hmmmm

not a huge suprise..but a good read

kudos to the breeze for having the guts to put this together!

however, this sentence is torturous on the English language - "In the conclusion of his letter, Tickle implored the Board to right what he said he sees as a previous wrong in appointing Alger by choosing not to renew the president’s contract. "

I was not crazy about Alger since the time I extended my hand at an Alumni event at the Akron FB game in 2013 and received the Grandma handshake.

This is 'spot on' and echoes my sentiment with regards to Jon Alger and his lack of leadership at JMU. It is past time for him to move on and hopefully his ineptitude to begin this fall semester will be the straw to break the camel's back.

How is it that JMU is the only state school in VA that had to shut it down.

Always liked Uncle Ron - he loved JMU

While I did not always agree with Lin, never questioned his big time love for JMU. I considered him a friend.

Have never spoken a word to Alger - so my comments come from a distant view of him, but it's always seemed he's been more about himself than JMU.

RE: JMU Leadership in danger?
A dream of mine would be answered if Alger is rooted out by the Board of Visitors.

It appears there are integrity issues and empty suit leadership issues finally being called out on the academic side. We've already seen these character flaws on the athletic side for many years

Del. Jason Miyares (VA-R), a JMU alumnus, described Alger as “invisible in the General Assembly,” saying, “We don’t hear from Alger. I got sworn in in January, 2016, right? I think I’ve seen him, in the five years plus, maybe twice.”

Time to go. Let's get a legit Prez this time. One who can lead the academic side AND lead the athletic side while doing it with integrity.

Here are the Board of Visitors to contact.
https://www.jmu.edu/visitors/index.shtml

also provided contacts on the BOV website
Donna L. Harper, Secretary to the Board at harperdl@jmu.edu
Lara P. Major, Rector at Rector@jmu.edu
Norman R. Jones, III, Student Representative at studentrepresentativebov@jmu.edu

Also instructions for email to the state of Virginia governor who approves the BOV

Alger was supposed to grow the endowment in this phase of university growth. Its sad that our endowment website hasn't been updated in YEARS.

https://www.jmu.edu/give/donors/endowment.shtml

Not ideal. JMU continues to grow, but could at a much more rapid pace if we had an aggressive leader. Too much beta in Alger.

Well - it appears we hit our goal. Endowments totaled 111 Million last year, and the goal listed in 2015 for 2019 was100 Million.

On the flip side we had 81 Million in 2015 - the average long term investment would of achieved at least 37% growth over those 4 years. I assume those funds are invested in equities.....

JMU Leadership in danger?
You think other universities set goals that are under what the market performs. You're a smart guy and know it doesn't pass the smell test

Does not sound like many new donations, or very poor investing.

When Alger goes, soonish or years from now, does the same crew that hired Alger hire the next president?

Joking, kind of, isn't a lack of transparency "the JMU way?"

Ooh, you aren't supposed to look at it like that. That's Dukeman's job.

He should have never been hired, a total and complete failure, I look forward to seeing him ushered out of town.

RE: JMU Leadership in danger?
I just saw this on twitter tonight and wanted to come over and see if Dukeman posted the link or not. Seems like a wet dream read for him. Pretty scathing article.

My immediate thought was, will the blow over in a week, or is it going to blow up? I would like to hear his side, because there are two sides of every story. But he might hide in his University owned house up on the hill; I have a major gripe about how much I've been hearing from Alger in the last month or two about the great things going on at JMU while ignoring the obvious problems that people are bringing up. He needs to acknowledge the issues but he seems to be dodging them.

Relating to sports, he also dodged the anti-COA manifesto backlash. When he gets called out, he stops communicating and refused to talk to me about the topic when I questioned his judgement and athletics acumen. In the formal Anti-COA document He secretly aligned JMU athletically with VMI, New Hampshire, Elon, Wofford, Vermont, Hofstra, Delaware, and William & Mary. What a joke. Only Delaware is in JMU’s area code for athletics. When the doc was leaked he got caught with his pants down and enough pressure was exerted that he changed his documented opinion when JMU ultimately approved COA funding for athletes.

He is not a good leader and I wouldn’t want him running my local grocery store much less a large State University like James Madison.

There are so many more people out there with superior abilities to replace him. Time for change now that his academic leadership track record has been exposed. Many don’t care about his athletics blunders, but Now can’t ignore his academic mismanagement which is his first priority. Integrity issues don’t just magically go away. People won’t forget And he isn’t a popular president anyway. He has no street cred to fend this one off.

In general, I think the article was well done, although I did get a chuckle out of the didn't respond to a Linkedin request part. Seriously, you couldn't find an e-mail address or phone number? I would have told one of my editors or reporters that doesn't cut it in terms of asking for comment.

After the mess W&M has gone through with its AD, I guess wouldn't surprise me if JMU canned its president. I don't have an opinion on the man at all, but I hope COVID doesn't take any more unnecessary casualties. I don't think that there was a true best way for organizations to handle the fall out of the outbreak.

This confirms what I have thought since my time as a student - Alger is not fit to run this institution. I wrote into the Duke Club saying I will be pausing my giving until he is gone.

I’m still processing this, but the article certainly raises a lot of concerns that appear valid. When the very top school donors who are close to the situation are speaking out, that says volumes.

Having said that - I don’t feel communication with the DC will likely reach the ears of the decision makers here - the BOV. Hart’s post describes a better way to address concerns with BOV members.

I also think withholding funds from the DC is less likely to create a positive change than it is to negatively impact the athletics program. Those funds help support JMU athletes and coaches that make our programs competitive.

That is fair. I wrote to the Duke Club because that is where I have always donated and thought that as the appropriate avenue to write in about my donation. I definitely have weighed the upside vs downside of halting, but I really find it hard to give my money to an institution, even if it is just the athletics arm of that institution, if I do not trust the leadership that is all the way at the top. Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't the BOV hear from the Duke Club if others were saying similar things?
