Although, being angry doesn’t automatically mean one is wrong! It just gives insight into intention.

Agree all around with the last few posts. It was bush league of the Breeze to publish only one side of the situation. The Breeze has been openly butthurt about the COVID numbers - which absolutely seems fair I think they have a right to get that information at least at the same time as the DNR or any media outlet. The bowl of cheerios has been tainted and I don't really care who started it but I hope everybody grows up and learns something.

The Prez is in charge until he is not. The BOV does not report to him. They are SUPPOSED to be the watchdogs of a State University and Alger’s admitted tactics of arranging 2 person BOV mini-meetings Undermine the transparency we all should demand.
I.e. if JMU gets a FBS conference invite, we should see the affirming and dissenting opinions played out in public BOV meetings with full FOIA access. That is just one example that may matter to sports fans.

I live in Hampton Roads so my state delegates are different from the ones ripping Alger in the article. However, I have contacted them and here is their input which also is not good...

One delegate - “I am very concerned about several points made in the article and will confer with the delegates mentioned in the article” also,
“I personally haven’t seen the JMU President in Richmond at the General Assembly. I have established relationships with the Presidents of VCU, Virginia Tech and UVA but have not met Mr. Alger.“

One Senator - “I joined a bipartisan call for JMU to open its recent board meeting to the public and to accept live public comment, however, I was chagrined by the news that it would not be accepting live public comment. Another Senator and I wrote to the Rector asking that the Board reconsider that decision, which they declined to do.

It is interesting that the BOV will not offer a response. It is also interesting that the VA Governor who appoints the BOV will not offer a response.
01-rivals
There is more that we don’t know because it has been kept hidden from FOIA requests unethically. James Madison is rolling over in his grave.

"malfeasance or illegal" is one standard... but this is clearly a sketchy tactic from a self-purported champion of transparency....

i say good for the Breeze - they are not being childish, they are doing what the press should do

RE: JMU Leadership in danger?
I’m not defending Alger or anyone else, but it’s not a “loophole” that two members of a public body can talk without giving notice. That's the way the law is written and anyone familiar with FOIA knows it. It’s a common practice throughout the state with city and town councils, county boards of supervisors, planning commissions, school boards, your local sewer authority, etc. If the law wasn’t written this way, one member of a BOV, or other public body, would literally be breaking the law if they picked up the phone and called a fellow board member to ask their opinion on the latest budget proposal, or what they thought about Alger’s performance or whatever. I’m a great fan of open meeting laws, but it’s gonna be tough to operate if two members can only talk in an open meeting.

The whining by previous board members is a little annoying. They don't answer to Alger and there is absolutely nothing prohibiting a board member from speaking up during a meeting or talking to the press about anything they want. If they’re too scared to do that, that’s on them.

I also get a chuckle from some of the comments from General Assembly members. They’re the ones that wrote the law that allows this type of arrangement. They also exempt themselves from the very requirements that they impose on localities, BOVs, etc.

RE: JMU Leadership in danger?
The bottom line is Alger is not a dynamic leader. On the one hand, he doesn’t divide people or embarrass the university like some polarizing Presidents have. Which is obviously a good thing. For me, he just feels like he is holding down a position. I don’t see him as a leader. I don’t feel he inspires people and gets things done the way Carrier did. He has no charisma. He seems like an ordinary Joe.

I feel about Alger the way I did about Mickey. He is an average President at a really good institution. Alger’s success comes because he is at JMU not the other way around. We have seen what happened at JMU with better football coaches . I think the same will happen for men’s basketball. I honestly believe JMU could be much more with a charismatic leader that was a home run hitter when it comes to engaging donors not just some donors.

Maybe I am just a big JMU homer that sees everything through purple glasses. JMU is an amazing place but I believe it is not reaching its full potential and that starts at the top.

03-lmfao While you and I will never agree on Mickey - I agree Alger is not a plus for JMU. Yeah, I would agree he just holds the job. I also sense a bit of arrogance with which has additionally bothered me by it.

Uncle Ron = promote and love the hell out of JMU.
Lin = Appreciative to head a school he loves.
Alger = my perception is not the same, although as I have said many times, I've never met him.

RE: JMU Leadership in danger?
I think he's a very smart, genuinely nice guy. But we all have our strengths and weaknesses, and I have the feeling that serving as president of a large public university perhaps isn't his ultimate calling. Eight years is a decent tenure for a college president, and I believe his daughter has now left for college, so it wouldn't suprise me if he will be moving on.

Is it just me, or is The Breeze trying very hard to become more TMZ than a normal university newspaper?
