To be fair, I suppose there are certain - really heinous - things a celebrity might say that would make me boycott that person, but it would have to be EVIL; just voicing an opinion contrary to my own isn't enough to make me give up college football.

JMO though.

I turned on MLB opening day ... saw the BLM on the mound ... didn't watch another pitch of MLB until the NLCS. If the Braves weren't in it that streak would still be unbroken. I did however watch every single KBO game ESPN broadcast in English instead.

NBA finals ratings were down by about 2/3rds. I learned to watch this kind of reaction a long long time ago. Most people won't give you a simple straight forward reason but when they are offended they vote on the issue two ways. They vote with their feet which means they quit attending whatever it was that offended them and in the case of sports that includes viewing, and there is only 1 reason no matter what the survey lists as options, they suddenly decided not to support the event. Their stated reasons may vary but all that matters is that the company offended them. If the company is too stupid or tone deaf to figure this out and make amends it won't get them back and if they are away for longer than a month or so you've probably lost them. So their sudden absence from your product is the only important data change and what you do about it is the only important response.

COVID has hit many pass times hard. The impact will be felt for years because (1) people broke their routines during the COVID crisis and they found other interests that didn't include social engagements and started watching other things at home. If they chose to watch sports it was for an escape from the rest of their stress. So the last thing they want to see when they tune in is some jock or network talking head telling them what to think and reminding them of the events they are trying to escape. In this regard the nature of the announcements and protests offends both left and right alike because the transgression is against the sanctity of the home and the sanctity of everyone's right to an escape and relaxation. Invade that space and damage it with the assumption that you are somehow reaching these people and they are going to see such an intrusion as a rude person walking in on them in the bathroom to harass them over a matter they don't want to discuss or see or hear. It's just that rude! And until the idiots running these networks realize that they are going to suffer.

If the NBA ratings are down ~65 to 68% for the finals I guarantee you there are a lot of Democrats and liberals tuning it out because the NBA isn't the first choice of many Republican right wingers, though I'm sure there are many, but they probably are not a majority of that 66-68!% who tuned out.

So this matter is not as political as people think but much more primal. Screw up the sanctity of what I enjoy at my home or in my down time and you bet your rear I'm tuning you out! So more than Get Woke Go Broke it's more like You Invade and I'll Evade or Cost Me My Privacy and I'll Cost You Your Business! In this regard those offering a product forget that those buying it or supporting it are the primary responsibility of their company. So this is a human right to privacy and relaxation issue than it is about just politics. Face it these jerks invade our internet space, or social media, spy on us through cameras and microphones embedded in phones and laptops and other devices, harass us at home with incessant predatory robo calls, and now in the midst of all of that intrusion when we sit down to watch the cities pro teams or watch our alma maters play sports, they invade that too. The main issue here is your and my fundamental right to decide what we will engage, when and where we will engage it, and the fundamental right to privacy for a certain number of hours each day. Screw the political aspects, we aren't free if they can get away this crap!

So the real issue is these corporate monoliths are so much in their own echo chamber that they are deaf to the silent screams and actions of the millions that are tuning them out. Politics is part of it, but the vast majority of it is our right to Privacy and our Right to avoid the Bullsheise of the day!

Any sport where the athletes knelt......click.

If they apologize at the beginning of next season, I'll tune them in, otherwise I have discovered that I can live without them and have gifted myself with a lot of available time for other pursuits.

Well said, JR - you probably have a point.

Honestly, for me, I just click to another channel when the pontificating begins, then click back after I figure it's over. As far as the kneeling goes - I don't watch the national anthem anyway - that's prime snack gathering time IMO!

I do think there's another major factor at work in the case of the NBA, however - the season was interrupted and finished in an antiseptic "bubble" at Disney World. It wasn't REAL basketball, at least not to me (my son watched every game, but he's a superfan).

Yeah, that's where I'm at. I was amazed at how easy it was to give up the NFL a few years ago.

I haven't been triggered by any political protests in sporting events, all the way back to Tommie Smith in Mexico City in 1968.

It never factors into my viewing habits.

But, to each their own, I suppose.

If, when you attempt to defend your person and property are then charged with a crime for just showing a legally held weapon......you are no longer free and have no right to privacy. Unfortunately it's all politics, and freedom is losing.

But, to each their own, I suppose.

You did not have a bank of announcers repeating that you the viewer are racist towards the audience. Even when people are stupid, they don't want to be called stupid.

When sports announcers move over to social commentary, most of them are unqualified. When a two year old boy pulls out his pecker and takes a whizz next to a tree. Reasonable people just ignore it. Media decision makers thought they could make money off the controversy and instead just pissed people off.

I have seen and heard the same telecasts as you. My eyes and ears work just fine.

It just doesn't bother me or affect my viewing habits.

Like you just said, reasonable people can just ignore it if they want.

I figure it is their right to protest and I'll just watch the game.
