Scholarship situation
My apologies if this topic has been addressed in a thread that I overlooked.

I count that we have for this season all 13 scholarships accounted for.

And none of those players is a senior.

If all 13 are back and we add four ... not going to work, as 13 is the limit.

I'm assuming the staff feels it can remove Hardaway from scholarship and that three other players will leave, thus freeing up four schollies.

Thoughts?

Schollys always work themselves out. But if Cisse is one and done. DJ, Nolley and Williams all will test the waters. If Boogie has a big year he could be gone. Although Stokes is expected to play this year he hasn’t showed up yet. We could have a transfer or two.

All kinds of things can happen. But I bet Junior keeps his scholly. No need to worry about schollys.

Could have stopped here. They always work out because there is no choice but to work out!

Agree. But complicating matters is that the NCAA is giving everybody an extra year of eligibility. For schools with several seniors, that's going to make it impossible to stay within the 13 limit, unless they simply don't sign anybody, which would leave a hole in their future roster.

Will be interesting to see how that's handled. My guess is the limit could be suspended for at least next year, if not beyond.

My bet is the NCAA holds the limit at 13 but provides a scholarship relief/exemption for every senior exercising their additional year of eligibility. In other words, those seniors just will not count toward the 13 scholarship limit.

RE: Scholarship situation
Seems there are various scenarios that could play out by this time next year.

Let's hope that those players who leave (to free up roster spots for the four future newcomers) do so in a positive manner.

The rule would need to be in place for 4 years after this one.

Hopefully this doesn't affect us unless the kid wanting to exercise the extra year just likes being on the team. That would mean we have continued to bring in high level talent.

That's too simple and logical.

This is the NCAA we are talking about here............

I do not think it would need to be. They are only extending an extra year of eligibility to the current senior class. Thus, next year you have the rule in place whereby second year seniors do not count against the scholarships and that class essentially has two groups of seniors coming off the roster at the same time.

Parrish said earlier this week the NCAA was discussing this and would vote on it in Jan.

The NCAA has already decided. Would be hard for them to change their minds in January after football is over, and basketball is well underway. The vote in January is actually on NIL and transfer eligibility.

In the Spring, the NCAA voted to allow Spring athletes an extra year. In August they voted to allow Fall athletes an extra year. And just this week they voted to allow Winter athletes an extra year. Here is an excerpt from their announcement in August and commentary from CBSSports:

"All fall sport student-athletes will receive both an additional year of eligibility and an additional year in which to complete it," the NCAA said in a release. "Student-athletes who do not enroll full time during the 2020 fall term have flexibility in the progress-toward-degree requirements that must be met for eligibility in future terms." Granting an extra year of eligibility could bring plenty of complications for schools, however. The NCAA's announcement said seniors student-athletes who take advantage of the additional year of eligibility will not count against team scholarship limits in 2021-22.
---CBSSports.com 8/21/20

This means everyone - not just Seniors - gets to play an extra year. But only this year's seniors will not count towards scholly limits next year. So they are giving coaches a one-year bubble to work out the schollies. Coaches can bring in next year's class as planned, but they might need to adjust future classes, depending upon how many guys decide to exercise the 5th year.

Has nothing to do with "seniors" which are hard to define these days anyway. Every student-athlete gets an extra year.

Therefore, over the next 5 years, the student-athlete basketball players that were on the roster at the end of last season are granted one more year of eligibilty no matter where they play or if they transfer, this is given to the athlete, not the program . The only way this would work is for the school to have the option of adding up to 3 additional scholarship athletes during the next 5 seasons. Otherwise, all high school seniors this year would be out of luck.

There you go... That makes sense, it only causes a scholarship squeeze this initial year. All future years coaches have plenty of time to recruit accordingly.

Agreed...

You are essentially increasing the number of eligible participants by 25%.

Now many may just opt out but the number of eligible players will definitely go up. Logically it would seem the scholly limit would be temporarily increased as well (whether that is via waivers or just a broad increase should be the discussion)

See the excerpt in post #13. It DOES have to do with seniors, along with all others. Everyone gets a 6th year to complete their 4 years eligibity, and this year does not count in the 4 years. However, returning SENIORS are the only ones who allow the school to increase their scholly limit next year.

Let's look at it in a bb example, since that's easier:
School has 13 players - 3 seniors and 10 others.
Next year, all the players come back.
School gets 16 schollies next year - 3 seniors, 10 others, and 3 incoming new players (who were intended to replace the 3 seniors).
The 2nd year, the school is back to 13 schollies.
The end.

According to this video.....we aren't done yet and a 5 STAR prospect we are after is going to announce on Saturday. His name is J D Davidson but....I did not see where we are even on his list of offers on 24/7. Then I looked some more and found this: His top schools are: Kansas, Alabama, Auburn, Memphis, LSU and Michigan. Davison, the No. 13-ranked player in the recruiting Class of 2021, also announced the date of his impending decision — that would be Oct 31, Halloween Day.
