According to Dukes1750 we were supposed to reduce drinking alcohol back in March? That explains a lot of my problem!

But on the good news front, new JMU fan born 9/25! Got three now, all boys - 4 years, 2 years, and the baby

RE: Tell me something good
Is this good news...from the WashPost?

NCAA will allow winter-sport athletes to receive an extra season of eligibility

The NCAA’s Division I Council voted to give eligibility relief to winter-sport athletes regardless of how many games they play during the 2020-21 academic year. Athletes now have the opportunity to play five seasons within a six-year span rather than the typical four seasons in five years.

Winter sports are set to begin in the upcoming months, and some of those seasons will resemble a normal schedule. However, the circumstances presented by the novel coronavirus pandemic will make the experience different from what athletes envisioned when they pursued college sports.

With the virus still spreading throughout the country, teams could face postponements or cancellations during their seasons. Some athletes also might want to opt out given the risks of contracting the virus as a result of participating in practices and competition.

AD

“The pandemic will continue to impact winter sport seasons in ways we can’t predict. Council members opted to provide for winter sport student-athletes the same flexibility given spring and fall sports previously,” M. Grace Calhoun, the Division I Council chair and the athletic director at the University of Pennsylvania, said in a statement. “The actions today ensure the continuation of local decision-making in the best interest of each institution and its student-athletes.”

Winter sports include basketball, gymnastics, swimming and diving, indoor track and field, ice hockey and wrestling. The NCAA delayed the start of the men’s and women’s college basketball seasons two weeks, with games set to tip off Nov. 25.

The council already granted eligibility relief to spring-sport athletes whose seasons were cut short because of the pandemic, as well as fall-sport athletes. Some conferences are playing fall sports as scheduled and others have postponed until the spring, but regardless of the circumstances, this year will not count against an athlete’s eligibility.

AD

Many winter-sport athletes missed out on the postseason of their 2019-20 campaigns, but they did not receive any eligibility relief, with the council noting that those athletes had the opportunity to compete in nearly their entire seasons. The NCAA canceled all championship events, including the men’s and women’s basketball tournaments, March 12, abruptly ending the seasons and careers of many athletes.

Eligibility relief is viewed as a fair resolution for athletes whose seasons have been affected by the pandemic, but it’s complex and presents logistical challenges. Schools self-apply this waiver for eligibility relief, meaning they get to choose whether athletes are allowed the extra season. Some athletic departments will not be able to afford the cost of doing so, particularly given the revenue deficits caused by the pandemic.

For fall sports, seniors who return for an extra season during the 2021-22 academic year will not count toward the team’s scholarship limit. However, in the years that follow, schools cannot exceed the limit, even though athletes on the team still would be allowed extra eligibility. In those cases, if schools choose to let athletes use their extra season of eligibility, it would effectively take away that scholarship from incoming recruits. The Division I Council’s announcement did not specify whether those same rules would be applied for winter sports.

AD

During virtual meetings Tuesday and Wednesday, the Division I Council also proposed that all athletes be allowed to transfer and compete immediately. Under current rules, undergraduate athletes must sit out a season after transferring unless they receive a waiver from the NCAA. This legislation would represent a shift in the college sports landscape, giving athletes more rights and freedom.

The proposal gives the council the option of requiring athletes to notify their school of their intention to transfer by a certain deadline — May 1 for fall and winter sports and July 1 for spring sports. The council plans to vote on this proposal in January.

“This proposal creates a uniform, equitable approach for all student-athletes, no matter the sport they play,” Jon Steinbrecher, the commissioner of the Mid-American Conference and chair of the NCAA’s working group on transfers, said in a statement. “We believe the proposal fulfills the promise of the transfer resolution adopted by the Council in the spring, and trust the membership will strongly consider bringing consistency and predictability to Division I transfer regulations while treating student-athletes across all sports alike and in a sensible fashion.”

AD

The Division I Council also waived bowl eligibility requirements for the 2020 football season. Typically, teams must have a .500 record to qualify for a bowl game. All Football Bowl Subdivision programs will now be eligible.

“In keeping with the Division I membership’s desire to provide maximum flexibility during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Council voted to allow as many student-athletes as possible the opportunity to participate in bowl games this year,” Calhoun said in a statement. “The decision also provides some certainty for schools and coaches as we move toward the postseason.”

RE: Tell me something good
Have been working at home for 10 years so not much change there except that my wife was working at home up until this past Monday (executives had to go back in). We definatley got to see more of eachother than in the past.

Got a new puppy.....cockapoo name Beau. he is about 7 months now and full of energy.

Have been able to work with my track and field kids a few days a week to help keep their fitness level up.

Been working with my next door neighbor's 15 year old kid (HS soph) the past 3 months to help get him ready for JV basketball. He has made a major transformation from a year ago losing about 40 lbs, getting very lean and gradually adding some muscle and athleticism. He couldn't jump up and touch the bottom of the net 3 months ago or jog 5 minutes straight but now he is 6"-8" up on the net (he is 5'6") and jogged 25 minutes the other day. Pretty cool to see this type of transformation.

RE: Tell me something good
My spring resulted in the completion of my honey do list projects. I spent my free time this summer doing repair work on our barn. Since I haven't been traveling for work, only one trip since March, I had several weekends in a row where I didn't work at all. This almost never happens.

I had sworn that I would never paint the barn again, but because of COVID, we will start painting in a couple of weeks. So glad we have our farm "chores" to keep me busy, they are somewhat of a ball and chain when I travel a lot, but they keep me out of trouble when I have no trips and no sports.

Several have mentioned time with their families. Just the wife and I here and everyone else in another state, so I have visited no one since March.

RE: Tell me something good
There are many good things...
I have ridden my bike more than ever and feel like a kid doing so for hours at a time. In addition to the exercise, it has allowed me to see many parts of the city I have never seen by car in 5 decades. I have burned through many great sports podcasts and e-books while riding that normally would be too long for me to listen to.

Working from home 50% of the time has saved me 2 hours of daily commute and showed me how much time really is available in the day when you aren’t stuck behind the wheel. Home remodeling project completion is 200% to LY. Husband cooking on the grill night is 300% to LY. As a bonus I have been able to sneak in more golf outings before the sunset after work.

We have been empty nesters for over 3 years, but our Daughter-in-law moved in “temporarily” during COVID while Chase is on a 9 month deployment. The blessing is that she is more of a daughter to us now as we spend all of our time together. The bond is much closer than it ever would have been with normal daughter-in-law visits out to San Diego. Losing our empty nester freedom has been a very small sacrifice in exchange for gaining a daughter. Although I do look forward to the day I can once again walk out of my shower naked and shout Wooooo! Like Rick Flair as I assume all empty nesters do.

I know business hasn’t been good for everyone during COVID depending on your industry, but for us, we are in the azz kicking business and business is good. Setting records for revenue and profits, huge bonuses for my employees, Morale is very high despite the COVID climate and risks our people get exposed to. Hiring more than ever to expand our workforce. Everyone, and I mean everyone, is fighting the good fight without complaining and focusing on what they can do while spending zero time worrying about what they can’t do. I think the perspective of seeing other industries get furloughed or fired during COVID has supremely motivated our workforce to give more effort and count their blessings.

Lastly, cold beer consumption in the backyard has increased. We don’t go out to eat during COVID and don’t go in our parents’ houses due to their high risk age in the 80’s and 70’s respectively. However, we do sit 10 feet apart in one of our backyards and enjoy the time together. I think it is mathematically impossible to sit in the backyard and not have a cold beer in your hand. 2 or 3 and then it is sleepy time for us old people.

RE: Tell me something good
Not taking 200+ flights/spending 100+ nights a year on the road has been really nice and has allowed folks to realize we can do so much more virtually instead of having to do everything in-person. That has meant a much better work/life balance. Was able to make it to all but one of my son's baseball practices/games and it has allowed us to practice/play catch almost every day. Since our parents aren't traveling/visiting, older kids have FaceTimed with grandparents almost everyday which never happened pre-covid. Not having JMU sports/Football has really, really, sucked, but on the bright side, it has made Saturdays a lot less stressful... (not scrambling between baseball/soccer games and trying to get to JMU for kickoff has been nice). It has also allowed a lot more friday/saturday fire pits with friends/neighbors and a lot more bourbons earlier in the day...

The real estate market has been inexplicable given Covid 19. Any house that is listed in King George that is priced properly sells almost immediately at or above full price and in a lot of cases with multiple offers. My wife had one come on the market yesterday and by 2 o'clock had two offers above the listing price and no home inspection except to void and little closing cost help. The only problem is there is very little inventory.

People say it is a seller's market. I have been in this business for 29 years and it is a unique market. It is both a seller's market and a buyer's market. Interest rates are still below 3% and a buyer can afford to offer above list price because it doesn't make $50 a month difference in their monthly payment. I will ride this pony as long as it lasts! Go Dukes!

We'll know soon....noticing inventory in hot neighborhoods in RIC is taking a lot longer to sell, with significant price reductions now happening. I've read that is happening in NoVa as well.

Could be the fall season finally cooling off, or it could be pent up demand has been exhausted. Stimulus ending and high unemployment also playing a role too.

Life since COVID has been surprisingly great despite not being able to attend JMU sporting events. My wife and I are expecting our third child any now so I am super exited for the arrival of new daughter. Work has been incredible. I have received a couple of promotions since COVID. I’m a commercial loan officer and our institution is being recognized for our loan growth for 2020. In fact, we held a ribbon cutting event today for my new loan production office opening up.

Since the COVID shutdown I have also started a new business/side hustle. I now buy distressed houses and rehab them back to market value condition. I have fixed up one house already and have started working on my second property. It has been a fun outlet for me thus far.

anyone have a pulse on the Harrisonburg RE market and how things are shaking out? Just down 81 in Waynesboro my mom and grandmother both sold their houses (moving in together to aid with my aging widowed grandmother) and both went for 5-10% over ask in under a week, appraisals supported the higher price, too.

Harrisonburg market is still red hott. Year over year sales increasing in each of the last 5 years, inventory at historic lows, selling prices trending up, definitely booming.

For more reading, Scott Rogers maintains a blog detailing the local market.
