For NMSU, our AD has said priority #1 is retaining the 4 rivalry games (NuM and the minors). We are also hoping to keep our Northern Iowa game. We usually play 2 small Great State of New Mexico schools. So that's 7 games. Jans mentioned a MTE tourney this summer, but who knows if that is still on. Jans and our AD have said they are having a hard time completing the schedule. That's all I know regarding our schedule..

Someone, I think it was PistolPete, said that WAC had to limit the number of D-II moveup teams to two per year, because they don't count as D-I the first year, and playing them home and away uses up the limit of four non-D-I games on the schedule. Is that going to prevent you from playing the usual games against ENMU and WNMU? Or maybe I misunderstood him.

The legislature of the Great State of NM has mandated that we play 2 small Great State of NM schools a year. Sometimes we do one exhibition and one game. Sometimes we do 2 games. I think Pistol is correct but not sure how Tarleton and Dixie will play into that arrangement. Maybe I will pose this question to our AD in next week's installment of Ask the AD.
The bylaws changed since this issue came up in the Southland conference several years back. It’s in bylaw 20.9.8.4 Counting Contests and 20.9.8.4.1.1 Reclassifying Opponents. A D1 school can’t have more than four contests (game, scrimmage) against a non-D1 school without receiving a waiver. However, the bylaws changed last year so that if the reclassifying program meets a D1 scheduling requirement itself, then it can counted as a D1 school. Previously, they weren’t counted as a D1 school until year two of the process. The WAC has had to receive blanket waivers for its schools in years past.. something that the SLC failed to do. So it’s feasible to add more than 2 DII schools at one time if the conference wanted to make such a drastic change.

Thanks for the authoritative info. So maybe NMSU can still play their Lesser Universities of New Mexico. Maybe someday they'll take on New Mexico Highlands, always liked that place.

RE: Wild speculation about....WAC MBB Schedule
Well, this is a change.

https://wacsports.com/general/2020-21/re...1021h97icb

" In an effort to minimize both travel and exposure, the Western Athletic Conference Board of Directors approved updated schedule formats for men's and women's basketball. In addition, the board approved updated conference schedule formats for men's and women's soccer, women's volleyball and men's and women's cross country to compete in the spring....

For basketball, the conference portion of the schedule will begin on Jan. 7 and will feature back-to-back games against the same opponent at the same site. Each team will host four opponents and travel to four opponents over the course of nine weeks. "

Back-to-back? I hope we get NMSU at home twice in two days. Low single digits last two tries.

Back-to-back?

Instead of playing two different teams over a Thursday-Saturday weekend at home or on the road, your team will play the same team back-to-back on Thursday-Saturday. SO, you might have two games at NMSU but get two home games against GCU. It might be an unbalanced strength of schedule depending on the home and road game draws but it will reduces travel (and cost and promote COVID safety) by going to one location (per week) for your road trips. "If" the WAC tournament can be played, that will allow the stronger "healthy" teams to rise to the top and compete for the NCAA bid; if the conference schedule wasn't setup in your team's favor.

UTRGV has 4 wins vs GCU, 2 at home and 2 on the road. All close games. I do think UTRGV right now is the new CS-Bakersfield of the WAC.

Mario Moccia said the games may actually be back to back. Or they may be Thursday and Saturday. That part of the schedule has not been determined yet.

Literally back-to-back would lead to some interesting strategy. Use up the starters to nail down one game and sacrifice the other, or spread them out?

AAU kids do it all the time, right? It's not a hard argument to make that players with better overall coaching, nutrition, facilities, strength and conditioning programs, etc. should be able to manage a couple 40 minute games in one day.

He did say if they go with a Thursday-Saturday setup, that the Saturday game would probably be played during the day; so the road team could get back early enough for COVID testing. The WAC has mandated three COVID tests per week. The schedulers are trying to setup the basketball schedule in a manner such that all testing is done while a team is at home. There is a concern with having COVID testing done on road. If a player is found to be positive on the road, he/she has to quarantine for 14 days at the location of the test. This makes it road testing problematic for teams. So the basketball schedule needs to be scheduled around the required COVID testing just before and after each road trip. I think the WAC teams are currently testing on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays.

B2B = Friday/Saturday. Not twice in one day. But I agree with the sentiment. With my AAU teams, we sometimes played 3-4 times in a day and 5-7 games over a weekend. Surely a college athlete could play Friday/Saturday with no issues.

My guess is the games will be Thursday/Saturday with the Saturday game being early in the day (noon).

So, we lost the ACU game. Bummer, was hoping they'd stay on the schedule.

I delivered pizza on Friday night during gradschool in Delaware. I would listen to the Penn basketball games. I think the Ivy league still plays Friday evening and Sat afternoon games. I might be wrong about that though. It is doable.
