Let's hope it's equivalent to Gonzaga vs Tarleton, rather than GCU vs Davenport. Not sure what contributed more to Majerle getting fired, Davenport or getting beaten at home by CBU and UTRGV.

On related note: I read Shaka Smart is in trouble at Texas. Pretty sure a loss to UTRGV on Wednesday would finish him.

Don’t get ahead of yourself there, you’re starting to sound like these Tarleton fans on when they beat Gonzaga or Kansas. What did Shaka do?

I think what Shaka did was be merely good when they wanted outstanding. Winning records but middle of Big12 rankings, no conference championships, no going deep in the NCAA tournament.

Seattle schedule news, from an alternate perspective.

All the talk focuses on who D1 schools are scheduling to help find games and fill open dates. Here is an NAIA Christian college in Washington who has Oregon State, California, University of Portland, Portland State and Seattle scheduled this year.

What a fun year for their guys.

Some coaches are better suited for mid major and some for P5. Shaka is a perfect example of that. He would have a powerhouse in VCU if he had stayed.

That is my theory as well. Guys like Shaka and Jans have systems to take down P5’s.

Excellent WAC preview. The author really knows his stuff. I wasn’t sure where to put it so I’ll just post it here.

Nevermind the inaccuracies, it says NMSU will dominate as the only "Tier 1" team. That's what makes it "excellent"

Very good read. I don't know what Chicago State did to invite the wrath of the Basketball God's but maybe some sacrifices are in order.

My bad. It was a long read. I admit I only read the Aggie review. He did a really good job on the Aggie write up. Maybe not so good on the others. I guess I just assumed he did due diligence on all teams. (I just read the ChiSt review and it looked pretty well researched).

And I still think UTRGVPANAMESPNUSA is the second best team in the WAC.

Mistakes aside, it wasn't bad. Needed improvement but that's to be expected from a blog. Did like the tiers though.

That is my theory as well. Guys like Shaka and Jans have systems to take down P5’s.

For coaches like Shaka Smart, the problem lies with the blue chip players available to the program. Shaka Smart built his reputation on recruiting overachieving athletes (mainly 2, 3, and 4-star players) who played a highly active full court style of basketball. At Texas, Smart has access to 5-star recruits. But that is a double edged sword. These type of players (one-and-done) dictated the chemistry and style of specific Longhorn teams but do not stay long enough in the program for Smart to build his desired system around. One year, Shaka might have a 5-star shot blocking center on his roster only to lose him to the draft. Then the following year it might be an ultra talented shooting guard on the roster. Each year, players like these change the dynamic on the team. Only Calipari and Coach K have mastered the practice of recruiting and winning with predominantly one-and-done players. Both coach's programs are built by recruiting enough of these type 5-star players each year to overcome any chemistry problems with sheer talent on the court. And each Wildcat and Blue Devil team takes a life onto its own. But even then, given the talent each of these coaches stockpile each year, they do not win as many Championships as they should given the amount of lottery picks that come out of each program. So, getting back to Shaka Smart. A coach like him prospers when he can establish his system around 3 and 4 year players; players who stay in the program long enough to build a culture. One and Done "alpha" type players actually disrupt that process. So, yes, I agree with you guys. Some coaches are better suited as mid-major coaches. Or, at least not at programs, where the booster and fans faithful expect a coach to recruit and build his program around a few one-and done lottery pick players each year; like at Texas.

Of course they did.

C'mon, man. We know you've got bragging rights for taking on Gonzaga and Kansas. But we also know that you'll be lucky to get within 30 points. Maybe 20 points if they let their deep bench play out the last 15 minutes.

I'm predicting you'll have exactly 6 OOC wins going into WAC play: Dallas Christian, Howard Payne, Sul Ross, Arlington Baptist, McMurry, and Paul Quinn.

Pretty sure that's the plan.

Make that 7 OOC wins; forgot we play ACU. And really, who knows by the time we get to Pepperdine in late December. They were a .500 team last year, so its possible we sneak out of there with a win and be 8-3 heading into conference play.
That would be a well-traveled, battle-tested and very athletic 8-3 team hosting GCU in little ol' Wisdom Gym to kick things off. Could be interesting!

I'd say TSU enters WAC play at 6-5 maybe 7-4.

Pepperdine is in year 2 of Coach Romar's rebuild. 9 of their L's came from WCC opponents
Gonzaga 0-2 BYU 0-2 SMC 0-2 Pacific 0-2 USF 0-1 couple that with being 0-3 vs Pac12 along with a losses to Providence UCF. Their bad L's were SJSU SacSt.

Yeah we don't lose to ACU in Basketball, at any level. It's written in the by-laws.
