RE: 2020-21 MBB Previews
Some folks live in black and white and absolutes- if it isn’t a home run hire it’s not a good hire, if JMU doesn’t spend $750k or $1M then they’ve failed here. I don’t buy that. I want JMU to win the conference and make the Ncaas regularly as much as anyone but I also can acknowedledge that Byington seems to fit, and has a trajectory where he could win big at JMU.

I can see that 1+1 can equal 3 here he raises our game and we raise his. The facts are that yes JMU committed resources to a new arena, yes they have increased spending (for head coach and staff), and yes Byington is a proven coach with a solid track record.

These are all positives in my eyes and everything I’ve seen from him thus far I’ve liked. We will see but just because JMU didn’t hire Bryce Drew or the guy from Vermont or convince the guy from Furman to move or take a chance on Pitino or the ex Gw coach or Seth Greenberg doesn’t mean that Byington isn’t good or can’t achieve a high level of success at JMU.

I believe Coach B can and I’ll support him and give him a chance because the programs success depends on excitement and a belief that he’s the guy. I’m bought in and not going to knit pick his resume or hanker for times gone by or spend my time trying to hammer the admin for spending too much on a new arena or not spending enough on a coach. I’m happy about the arena and the new coach. There has been progress and expectations have been raised. I think he will do well here.

I'm not sure how much difference there will be this year between our 1st team and our 2nd five guys. If nothing else, the compact schedule w/ back to back games might help us.

I would of favored more investment into a head coach. I said that before and that belief has not changed. That said, there is a lot I like about Mark. I think so far his recruiting seems to be an upgrade. I like the staff he's assembled. I think his resume is solid. However, I'm not where many on here are not having scene how his team plays on the court. My "best guess" is he'll be the best coach we've had since Lefty (pretty low bar), but I'd put the odds of him being an upgrade over Brady about 66%.

I 'm hoping for a top 4 or 5 finish this year in the CAA. I think coaches can have an immediate impact in basketball.

I say this as a positive - I think for the money we were willing to spend, we made an excellent decision.

So far, so good, but it's way too early for me to know.

Not sure what the crowd allowance will be in Trask, but with two home games at UNCW, there should be a lot of interest with Byington at the helm of JMU. Could also be the beginning of a rivalry.

3 man weave Caa preview. JMU picked 9th and W&M 10th again.

RE: 2020-21 MBB Previews
You have to hope newcomers can contribute after having good players transfer like W&M had last season. Your only graduate, Pinkard, played so little that he wasn't listed as a Key Loss. I can't rule out Matt Lewis winning POY, but that will be hard if you are bad. I don't think he could win POY if you're seventh at 6-12. It's nice to have a player reach 2,000 points like Lewis is expected to do. The good news for you is that most teams could have things go wrong.

As a Hofstra fan, I'm happy with being picked first. If Hofstra can win after Desure Buie and Eli Pemberton graduated, it will show consistency. Hofstra has had highs and lows, and has never been above average or below average for more than three consecutive seasons of their 19 in the CAA. This season should make four. Even if other sites don't pick Hofstra first, I think every site will have them in the top half of the NCAA. Buie was able to step up after Wright-Foreman graduated. If Jalen Ray, Tareq Coburn, and guys on other teams can't do that, it will be good you because you have a go-to player. You may need to have close wins with Lewis outscoring the opposing top scorer by 10 to make up for him having a worse supporting cast. Hofstra fans have had plenty of complaints about letting one player score 30+. The extreme example of relying on one player was when Towson's Gary Neal was a senior in 2006-2007. He scored more than Towson's next three scorers combined, and I thought he deserved POY over Hofstra's Loren Stokes.

RE: 2020-21 MBB Previews
Here's what I took away from quickly perusing and reading thru the 3-man weave, and thanks to 97 for posting that:

Key losses:

1. Hofstra - Pemberton and Buie
2. Charleston - Grant Riller
3. NE - Jordan Roland Bolden Brace
4. Towson - Brian Fobbs
5. DE - Nate Darling and Mutts
6. W&M - Nathan Knight and 7-footer from Wisconsin
7. Elon - Marcus Sheffield

League was not a powerhouse last year. JMU, if you'll recall, was beating Hofstra by 13 points at home when they fell apart and reverted back to Rowe's philosophy the rest of the way, possibly winning 2 games thereafter. I thought in watching that game that JMU was more talented. Hofstra went on to win the CAA tourney.

To me, the most talented teams in the league this year include Elon and JMU. I know that Earl Grant is a good recruiter and I suspect that Charleston has some talent, as does possibly Towson, who often reloads with transfers (and they have a few coming in).

Incoming players to JMU:
1. 4 star center, ranked among top 30 at his position, Joel Mensah
2. 3 star forward and top 5 ranked player in South Carolina, Justin Amadi
3. JUCO All American in Rashawn Fredericks (Cincy/UAB transfer)
4. 3 star guard, and top 15 player in GA, 6-6 Edwards
5. NEC rookie of the year, with interest from Oregon, Vado Morse
6. Complementary players in Strickland, Hodges and Taylor (sitting out)

Returning players:
1. Matt Lewis, averaged close to 19 points a game and is among JMU's leading all time scorers.
2. Zach Jacobs, a greatly improved player that had 15 offers coming out of HS
3. Michael Christmas, 3 star player with offers from Texas Tech and Oregon, two time VA player of the year
4. Julien Wooden, VA player of the year
5. Top 15 player in state of NC, who was heavily recruited by Hofstra and others, Jayvis Harvey

Bottom line: with a new, competent and deep coaching staff and this level of experienced talent, this team should be no worse than 3rd. What looks like an egregious error in judgment on the part of early prognosticators. I'm not the only one that commended Byington for the talent he brought in...recruiting evaluators noticed it. A competent coach would have had last year's team in a competitive mode and the talent has been significantly upgraded, as has the coaching.

I agree the talent is there. And I believe the coaching will be much improved. My question is how long will it take to identify and develop a winning chemistry. This team has so many good pieces my hope is the coaching will put them in a position to win early and develop the confidence to win consistently.

RE: 2020-21 MBB Previews
Agreed that we have talent and Coach B has done a great job (especially considering the circumstances) of infusing more talent and depth into the roster. Obviously cohesion is going to be a challenge with a new coach new system during a time with a different off season and pre season.

I do think the prognosticators took the safe pick based on the roster turnover and our recent performance in picking us 9th. Some were burned last year by thinking JMU may finish in the top half. I get that with Lou Rowe as coach because he never proved he could win. Coach B does have a track record and I think that should be worth something. The Caa teams lost some players and there are still some players (Drexel for example has the big Butler and the guard still on their team). I think JMU should be 6th or 7th in these predictions based on returning talent and Coach Bs resume. We should be above UNCW who was bad and has a new unproven head coach. We should be above Drexel who has struggled under Spiker.

What I hope to see is players who have a high basketball IQ. I am looking for guys who react rather than think then move.

Lots of concern shared on hear in the past about Lou’s coaching but I felt his talent level was a bigger concern. I expected Lou to recruit better. The lack of talent depth was a surprise for me because Lou had always been a good recruiter.

It sure looks like Byington has upgraded JMU at every other position while managing to keep the best player from the previous roster on the team. I don’t see how JMU does not improve significantly this year.

I thought I counted that 12 of the top 15 scorers in the CAA had left until I read that a Drexel guy that fit into category had been granted a 6th year of eligibility. So yes, Drexel has a lot returning. Drexel, according to that site, though, has been the approximate 250th ranked team in the country nearly every season for 6 straight years, meaning Drexel can never move the needle.

I like our talent and our coaching staff and not a ton is returning to the league in terms of scoring. All the other CAA teams are in the same boat as JMU in terms of off season workouts and getting guys up to speed. And yes, JMU's selection is heavily influenced by its recent dreadful performances, especially as compared to where they've been picked. And I missed that Bertrand of Towson transferred out...so another significant loss for them in addition to Brian Fobbs.

Couple other points on this: JMU, IMHO, has one of its most talented teams on paper in many years. It rivals, perhaps, the 3rd year of Brady's tenure (2011-12?) and the Lefty team that advanced to the NCAAs (1993-94 team). This team on paper seems deep and answers the mail in most areas:

Scorers: Lewis, Fredericks and Morse (have all averaged double digits collegiately)
Shot Blockers: Mensah, Jacobs, Wooden
Athletic Wings: Christmas, Edwards, Fredericks
Athletic interior players: Wooden, Amadi, Mensah (Taylor also fits this description but is sitting out)
Ball handlers: Lewis, Hodge, Strickland, Morse
Shooters: Lewis, Fredericks, Morse, Christmas, Harvey, Hodge
Defenders: TBD (a key area for improvement across the board)

We're in agreement. 04-cheers

I've been saying all along I think the improvement can be much quicker than many expect. I'd be surprised if we did not finish in the top 4, and finishing higher would not surprise me.

Dukester, we've had our disagreements in the past, but my guess is that we generally agree on most things sports.

I forgot one other key loss while I'm at it: JaDun Michael, the talented Elon freshman, is out for the season after shoulder surgery. Doesn't make me happy to say that, but that's a big hit to Elon, of course. He had offers from Penn State, Wichita State, Cincy, DePaul, Louisville, VA, Pitt and NC State, among others. He's got to be one of the most heralded recruits to ever commit to the CAA.

Yep we certainly agreed on most thinks JMU athletics wise. At the beginning of each basketball season we're frequently on the same page.

The better the CAA, the better for JMU - sad to hear about the Elon player. I don't think this group of schools will ever reach the level we were at 10-15 years ago in the CAA, but I would prefer the league to become more relevant.

I honestly think if ODU, JMU, GMU, & UNCW were still in the CAA along with VCU - those four schools programs would be much better today. The passions for all four programs are nowhere where they could be.

If and buts.....

Ah the late Ken Beatrice. Used to listen to him from Boston when I worked for my uncle when I was in college. Was very surprised when I moved to NoVa in 1984 and heard him on WMAL. I know that voice!!!

One of the members of my model airplane club lived a few houses down from him in a retirement community in the Gainesville/Haymarket area. Ken passed away in 2015.

RE: 2020-21 MBB Previews
It's interesting that we're now less than a month from the potential start of the MBB and WBB season and we still don't have full schedules released.

As a kid, 2 or 3 times I gathered up enough courage to call in to talk to Ken.

Before the DC area Sports channels that started about 20 some years ago, Ken was the only real source. Listened to him on evening drive coming home from work. As a kid I listened at home on AM Radio. The guy knew a ton about sports off the top of his head. No computers....

Had some great TV personalities to grow up with, as well, in the Washington area:

Warner Wolf

Glenn Brenner

George Michaels

Not really sports, but Willard Scott

Then Buck - and the classic Asking Gibbs about Playboy ranking Redskins pre-season #1. 03-lmfao

The Classic weekly - "Redskins Sideline"

And again not sports, but Saturday morning Wonderama? Bob McAllister - Nobody there "had an Aardvark" - "Kids are people too" - remember opening those cans, and if you got the flower you won the bike?

Captain 20. Gerbil races.
