Uniform Combination Stats
I am superstitious like every single person who has ever played any sport at any level in their lifetime. I was curious to see if the numbers lead to anything, so I took an hour to map everything out.

The things that interested me in particular were white helmets, striped helmets with white on them, and uniforms with no blue in them. Like many of our fans on the board, seeing a white helmet or a striped helmet with white in it, or those ugly white uniforms with black or gray numbers with no blue, give me a bad feeling. It seems like we play like crap in those combos and I wanted to put our gut feelings to the test.

So here it is. Data for our games from 2018, 2019 and our first two games this year.

NOTABLE
- 21-9 Overall
- 14-1 Home
- 7-6 Away
- 0-2 Neutral
- We are 14-1 at home, so whatever we wear at home doesn't matter
- In our only home loss to UCF we wore blue and white striped helmets, blue jerseys and white pants

JERSEYS/PANTS
3-0 Blue/Blue
3-0 Blue Gray
2-0 Black/Black
1-0 Black/Blue (only Navy at home)
1-0 White/Blue (only @ ECU)
1-0 Black/Gray (only Tulsa at home)
4-1 Gray/Gray (only loss to Penn State)
2-1 Blue/White
4-4 White/White
0-3 White/Gray (probably retired after 2018, not worn last year)

HELMETS
3-0 Blue/Gray stripes
1-0 Blue/Black stripes
1-0 Black/Grey stripes
1-0 Black
6-1 Blue
5-1 Gray
2-1 Blue/White stripes
1-1 Gray/White stripes
1-3 White
0-2 White/Black stripes

17-2 No White (home loss to UCF)
4-7 White or white with stripes

STRIPES VS. NO STRIPES
13-5 No stripes
8-4 Stripes

NO BLUE (White with black or gray numbers) (3-4)
L Navy A
L Wake Forest N
W ULM H
L Temple A
W Tulsa A
W USF A
L SMU A

GOOD GAMES WITH WHITE HELMETS
L UCF Home
W USF Away
W Arkansas State Home

BAD GAMES WITH WHITE HELMETS
L Navy Away
L Tulane Away
L Missouri Away
L Wake Forest Neutral
L Temple Away
L SMU Away

BEST ITEMS
5-0 Striped helmets no white
4-0 Black jersey
2-0 Black jersey/black pants
2-0 Black pants
1-0 Black helmet
8-1 Blue jersey
6-1 Blue helmet
6-1 Blue pants
5-1 Gray helmet
4-1 Gray jersey
13-5 Helmet no stripes
8-4 Helmet with stripes

WORST ITEMS
0-2 Black/White stripes, White jerseys, white pants, black numbers
1-3 White helmet
4-7 White jersey
4-7 Helmet with white (solid or striped)
1-2 Black numbers (win at USF with solid white helmet)
3-4 Striped helmet with white

CONCLUSION
We should never EVER wear a helmet that has any white on it under any circumstances, and especially a solid white helmet. Arguably our two worst games in the last two seasons at Tulane and at Missouri were played with solid white helmets, as was the loss to Wake Forest.

The striped helmets with white aren't much better. We have our only home loss to UCF along with the disasters at Navy and Temple wearing them. Navy, Temple and at SMU were all heartbreakers wearing them.

So when myself and others saw that hideous looking black and white thing we wore against SMU, many of us thought of Temple. Same uniform, same crappy ending. IF it was up to me, I would go with all gray uniforms with a solid blue or gray helmet on the road.

The bottom line is that we aren't dreaming it when we see helmets with white in them or uniforms with no blue in them, and think that we might not play very well. Historically, in the last two plus seasons, we haven't.

RE: The Uniform Combination Thread
Thanks for putting that together.

I don't know how much control over it the home team has when we are the visitor. I mean, there is such a thing as the "road whites". I know the home team can reject some color combinations and I imagine they can insist you have majority white in your jerseys. I don't know if anybody actually ever does it though, as long as the uniforms you want to wear are different enough from what they want to wear at home. Maybe they generally specify "light" and "dark" as the choices.

I think our best helmet is one we wore at UCF for conf champ game. Blue w/ white stripes down the middle, white facemask, white leaping tiger M logo on both sides. Would look good on gray helmet with blue stripes and stickers.

Ditch the Tiger stripes. We aren't the Cincinnati Bengals. Ditch the oversized logo on one side and # on the other. Leave that for Boise. Matter of fact, no #s on helmets on either side. Oh, and torch the black and white, gray and white uniforms! Some blue should be mandatory in every uniform combo they wear.

I like just about every uni combo we have.
I like Tiger striped helmets.
I do NOT like the oreo or ebony/ivory unis we wore at SMU. That is about the only one I just don't care for.

Interesting that you mention that helmet. From watching video from every game, I did love that helmet. The striping mimicked the striping on the basketball uniforms. Also, all of our black combos are very nice, but we don't wear them that often.

We are undefeated in the 4 games where we wear black over the last two years, with 3 of those games against tough opponents. We beat 8-3 Houston in black/black, 1-8 Tulsa in black/gray, 2-0 Navy in black/blue and black/black against 10-1 Cincinnati.

Every post has to have the disclaimer about if the kids love them, then we keep doing them. I agree; we are overdoing it. No to striped helmets and put the logo on both sides of it. That's almost the entire list. No striped helmet, no helmets with white in them, both of the school colours in every uniform.

When we do that, we have the nicest uniforms in the country.

RE: Uniform Combination Stats
I thought I read that Nike doesn't like the asymmetry of our logo and that's why they don't like to have it on both sides. I think I read this about basketball, and our basketball uniforms only have the logo on one side. So, I think that Nike why we have the one-sided, over sized logo, on so many helmets.

I agree with the second UCF championship game helmet. But I also like the striped helmets (especially when our school colors are part of the striping). I think its neat that our striped helmets are unique and not the same pattern style as the Bengals.

Grey helmets with blue stripes and gray pants are my favorite (Navy game in 2017).

From the past, I liked the Stobart unis--metallic gray helmets with metallic silver pants. Leaping tiger logo on both sides. I may like those also because those uniforms changed us from navy blue (all through the 80's when I was growing up) to Tiger blue.

For a while, the logo on the football field was centered, which looked weird. Now the logo has the M centered, which looks much better. I hadn't heard that about Nike, but it still seems strange that it would apply to our helmets. I hate not having the logo on both sides and I think the numbers on one side of the helmet isn't attractive.

White is normal road team color. Winning on the road is hard, in any color.

NO WHITE (5-1)

You can argue that UCF is going to be hard to beat no matter what, but Navy was horrible, and Tulane and Temple weren't world beaters and we played like crap in both of those games. Wake Forest wasn't great either and we played very poorly against them too. The helmet doesn't have to have white in it. Many teams only have one helmet.

Haha, I don't even know how to spell my zodiac sign, and when we were kids we had a Ouija board. I do avoid black cats and ladders. Somehow, I still manage to function...

That leaping logo was always hard to fit on a good cap.

I like all of the helmet uniform combos.

I liked some that Fuente used and Norvell didn't.
