Premature I know but ECU hadn't beaten an AAC team not named UCONN since UC in '17 and ECU hasn't played a meaningful game since 2015. Let's just say that Pirate fans are very eager for something to get excited about. Beating USF exercised some demons. ECU's victory in that game now makes Navy the team that we have the worst winning percentage against (1-6). Even though the spread in this series has been low, Navy has consistently destroyed the Pirates year after year. Ironically, the one year ECU was actually favored was ECU's worst loss. Meanwhile, ECU lone W was the only time the Pirates were double digit dogs.

2010 - ecu -3/navy 76-35
2011 - navy -12/ ECU 38-35
2012 - navy -3/navy 56-28
2015 - navy -5/navy 45-21
2016 - navy -8/navy 66-31
2019 - navy -7/navy 42-10

If ECU loses it just continues the bottom dweller narrative. However, if ECU prevails it would be huge for this extremely young team to defeat a 1st place Navy team that has had the Pirates number over the years like no other except for the USF team we just beat down last week. Consecutive wins over USF & Navy would be a game changer for this program due to what has transpired in recent years, notwithstanding whether those teams are down this year or not.

In honor of the US Navy, here is the worst beat down ECU has ever been subjected to. It still gives me nightmares to this day. A sold-out crowd watched Navy fullbacks just gash us up the gut again and again. Then they always go over the top with an unsuspected pass for a TD. A 5 minute clip of highlights I want to forget.

I consider it a win if we figure out a way to hold them under 50.

Speculation on ECU boards is that starting QB Holton Ahlers may be out this Saturday due to covid testing/tracing and that ECU will likely have to start a true freshman QB that has never completed a pass in college. That said, Mason Garcia is a 4* QB from just down the road in Myrtle Beach, SC that ultimately chose ECU over offers from Mizzou, Syracuse, Pitt & Cincy amoung others.

Regardless, if Garcia is forced to start this early in his career while still learning the playbook that has gotta be an advantage for Navy. Might be a good time to lay some bread down on Navy -2 before this becomes official.
