Texas trophy
So, Joe, who is leading for the Texas Trophy so far? I ask because all the teams in Texas in whatever league seem to be struggling so far.

I don't have a dog in this fight, but........I thought UTSA looked damn good yesterday against a very tough BYU team. And don't count out UTEP either. If the Miners can get their "penalties" under control, they'll be very, very, tough. There's a lot of talent on that Miners team. UTEP will win more games this year with better discipline.

Yeah, they did look pretty good, and I was glad to see them both in it to the end, and Rice will meet them both later this year. But the BIG12 Texas teams are getting whipped, and most of the others are hurting to some degree. Feel bad for my state.

Long way to determine the TT. Just wondering what the current status is.

Your opinion is always welcome, dog in the fight or not.

Thanks. I also look forward to seeing Rice take the field later this fall and seeing what improvements Bloomgren is making.

RE: Texas trophy
aTm beat Florida, that should propel the Aggies up a few notches. I guess Texas is NOT back...

I think UTSA is on the cusp of a break-out season. That Narcesse dude, QB, looked really good, and he can only get better with more PT. UTSA looks big and physical too, they matched up nicely with that beef on the BYU side. The Runners should win 9 games, maybe 10, and with a bowl win added, they should definitely reach the 10-win plateau this year.

UTEP has some talent. Those JUCOs have stepped in and are contributing nicely. I predict 7-5 and a bowl game for the Miners. NOTE: I used to call them the "Minors" as a knock, but not anymore, they are the Miners!

As for Rice, well, you might just be the best 0-0 team in the nation! And those prospects will improve as more conferences start to play and Rice remains idle.

Didn't realize SMUt had that good a record. I know UHhuh was struggling to find opponents. Those two just might be the best in the state right now.

A&M - don't know yet. UT, TexTech, TCU, Baylor - struggling.

We had a talk about it a few weeks ago, and I think the consensus is that Rice retains the title until it goes on the line against UTSA on Nov. 7th. Should Rice not play that game than the title would be forfeited, and UTSA and UTEP would battle for the it the following week (Nov. 14th).

I'll bump the old title thread. I need to read up and make sure that was the conclusion. Thanks for bringing the topic up.

Rice retains this title! How did they ever get it? Last year was a 3-way tie between Rice, UTSA, and UNT. The year before Rice lost to all the Texas teams. Sorry, Rice cannot retain a title they never had in the first place!

You need to the read official Texas Title Thread. The title is linear. The lineage of the title is well documented. Simply put, "You have to beat the man to be the man".

It goes back years. Here's a rundown of the title as it has changed hands over the years...

Rice (Nov. 23, 2019- current)
North Texas (Nov. 24, 2018-Nov. 23, 2019) -367 Days
UTSA (Oct. 21, 2017-Nov. 24, 2018) -399 Days
Rice (Nov. 19, 2016-Oct. 21, 2017) -337 Days
UTEP (Nov. 6, 2015-Nov. 19,2016) -380 Days
Rice (Nov. 21, 2014-Nov. 6, 2015) -351 Days
UTEP (Oct. 25, 2014-Nov.21, 2014) -28 Days
UTSA (Nov. 23, 2013-Oct.25, 2014) -337 Days
North Texas (Oct. 31, 2013-Nov. 23, 2013) -24 Days
Rice (Aug. 31, 2013-Oct. 31, 2013) -61 Days

I can't speak to how Rice first got the title in 2013 (maybe someone else can), but the way it works is that they held it that year for 61 days until they lost to UNT. North Texas then held it for 24 days until we beat them. We then held it for 337 days until we lost to UTEP. UTEP then had it for 28 days until they lost to Rice, and so on.

Like SSJ said, a C-USA Texas team holds the title until they're beaten by another C-USA Texas team. Once they lose, the team they lost to holds the belt until they're beaten by someone else, and so on. It's the same format that's used for boxing, wrestling, etc. It was kept simple because if you try to do it by who had the best year or something similar, it creates a potential Gordian Knot due to all the different variables that could come into play.

You're taking it too seriously. Just a fun thing to keep track of because there are 4 teams from Texas in our conference. Nothing more, nothing less. Has no bearing on anything, but does everything always have to mean something?

College football is a big business these days, and there's school pride and name recognition involved, but what sometimes gets lost in all that is that it's also just a game, and many fans even enjoy the camaraderie of tailgating as much as (if not more than) the action on the field. A lot of this is just people finding new ways to have fun, and also finding new ways to talk about something they love (football).

Btw, for what it's worth in case you didn't notice, UTSA has the longest title reign so far at 399 days. Whether it's meaningless or not, that's still a cool thing.

Lazy, this isn't my thread. OptimisticOwl started this one because he couldn't find the original thread that contains the historic information. I bumped the original title thread at 4pm today. It contains the entire history of the title from its origins back in 2017. It was just a few lines down from this one. Here is the link....

North Texas (Oct. 31, 2013-Nov. 23, 2013) -24 Days
Rice (Aug. 31, 2013-Oct. 31, 2013) -61 Days

I can't speak to how Rice first got the title in 2013 (maybe someone else can), but the way it works is that they held it that year for 61 days until they lost to UNT. Courtesy of Owl at the Moon's diligent research, the majority of those interested seemed to agree to Rice starting with the trophy. Here is his original post.

"But if it's based on the 2013 configuration... we need to go all the way back to 2013 and follow the title belt from there.

What say you to this:

At the start of 2013: RICE begins the season as undisputed holder of the trophy. Why?
1. At the time, Rice had won its last meeting against all three of the others (2 of those were OOC)
2. If a similar trophy had existed among TX CUSA schools in 2012, RICE would have been the incumbent trophy holder (by beating SMU, who'd previously beaten UH in 2012).

2013 was a great year for the trophy with three of the teams in contention for the CUSA West.
Rice retains it against UTSA and UTEP, but loses the trophy (and the inside track on the division title) on Halloween Night at UNT.
When UTSA later beats UNT, it clears the way for RICE to take the division title. But UTSA finishes 2013 with the Texas Trophy!

In 2014, UTSA opens as trophy holder and defends its honor by destroying UH in TDECU (thank you, that was something Rice didn't do against UH OOC as Trophy holder in 2013). But in UTSA's first trophy defense, UTEP wrangles it away with a 34-0 shutout. UTEP defends against UNT, but hands over to RICE on 11/21. Rice ends 2014 as trophy holder.

In 2015, Rice defends against UNT but loses the trophy to UTEP the first week of November (I have to admit I'm surprised UTEP held it twice) and then UTEP defends against UNT to hold the title after 2015.

In 2016, UTEP defends against UTSA (52-49!) but loses trophy back to RICE on the season's penultimate week.

So if you all agree... this is how it should be. Everyone's had it at least once. And it's on the line in week two at UTEP.

If RICE wins then we take it to TDECU to show it off to our former CUSA TX pals and hopefully repeat UTSA's success there... and UTSA would be next in line on Oct 21.

IfUTEP wins then UTSA is still next in line but one week later on Oct 28.
Either way, UNT won't play for it against UTSA Oct 7 but might have the opportunity in November if UTEP or RICE still have it then.

Trophy Holders:
2013: RICE, UNT, UTSA
2014: UTSA, UTEP, RICE
2015: RICE, UTEP
2016: UTEP, RICE"
