USF, never was. At least not the extent that their fan base seems to believe. They cannot seem to get past Leavett and the Big East era. Until they embrace where they are and build a loyal fan base in the down years, in the AAC, they will continue to spiral. You cannot skip the building process.

The USF program is currently at the lowest of the low at this point in time. Jeff Scott has been a bust. I know it's only been a year, but the team has actually regressed. There are very few bright spots to put hope in. So make fun, do what you have to do, I personally don't care at the moment.

This year is effectively year zero of the Jeff Scott era. I don't know if he's the right choice to right the (pirate) ship, but he needed to cut out the malaise and cancer that was installed by Strong. It's not unlike when our basketball team finally realized the mistake we made in hiring Antigua, and our basketball team was in a nadir. We hired Brian Gregory, and he took his lumps, but he's now built a team that can serve as the foundation for something hopefully sustainable. Scott has to do the same thing.

Those of our fans who have deified Leavitt are now the ones holding us back. Life in the Leavitt era wasn't rainbows and unicorns. He would get us up for the big early season games (like at Auburn), but then fail to prepare for the "mundane" ones (which is why Rutgers and, to a lesser extent, UConn owned us during his reign). As much as I recognize that Taggart had his shortcomings, the man had us much closer to a conference/division title than Leavitt ever did. The good hires (and yes, Leavitt was a good hire to build a program from scratch) have been offset by bad ones (Holtz, Strong). Hopefully Scott is a good hire. But to think that somehow a bad stretch is something that would cause us to lose hope is ridiculous. Every program, even Bama, has had to suffer a down stretch. Chill out.

Well, this year maybe. East Carolina and Temple can certainly make a case too. There will never, NEVER, be a football program in the American that will win more Thomas Crapper Trophies than UConn did...

03-lmfao Speaking of the sun, most of us would love to launch ECU into it.

Most of us would also rather see Cindy lose their conference championships to Miami of Ohio for a change, but here we all are. 04-cheers

I like South Florida, but I think they need an on campus stadium.

Also I agree about Strong. The conference as a whole needs to stop hiring P5 rejects.

Tulane did that back in CUSA with Bob Toledo. Hilarity ensued.

This needs to be added to the conference by-laws. In the seven years the AAC has existed about 25% of the league has been drug down by P5 rejects.

UC - Tuberville - Total Failure
USF - Strong - Total Failure
UH - Holgerson - Still too early to call, but after the year one debacle I'm very skeptical.

And no, USF does NOT "need" an on campus stadium. Really not ever, but definitely not in an era where entire universities are cutting their budgets.

Fickell was an interim coach, and I would hardly put him in the same category as those P5 retreads.

I'm not defending Strong (he was a disaster hire), but given his success at Louisville and his considerable experience in Florida (including as the DC at UF and recruiting Teddy Bridgewater), it looked good on paper. Point being - there is no "one size fits all" rule with respect to hiring a coach. Just as one example, Frank Solich has been perfectly fine at Ohio. How about if we put into the conference by-laws "do your own research instead of making sweeping generalizations?"

USF haven't been down for more than like a year so far. They'll get back to 7-8 wins in 2 years from now.

Temple isn't a FB school. They were punching above their weight before COVID leveled their whole season. Ignore this record and judge them after the 2021 season.

ECU have been poor for five years. It's so strange since I remember GOOD ECU. They were added for football credibility and now are on losing streaks to teams like...

...Tulane, who look great in nonconference play but can't close the gap to turn in a few quality AAC wins. This season isn't lost for them, but they need 1 more AAC win + bowl win to keep the rebuild moving. They could still finish comfortably in the middle of the AAC this year but they need a few breaks for that to happen.

Nobody else in the AAC worries me at this time.

I think we have a misunderstanding here, my point that I wouldn't put Fickell in the same category as those three is because they had all built successfulish programs at the P5 level. Wheras, Fickell just had to drive the boat for a season. Also, I've done the research and hiring fired P5 coaches usually doesn't work out; plus, this is a message board, sweeping generalizations are what make the commentary interesting. 05-stirthepot 02-13-banana

I mean Tulane was one QB change away from a clear W against Navy. Going into Houston, would've been top25 and probably pull off a win against either SMU or Houston.

I know it's the same woulda, coulda, shoulda, we have every year with Willie Fritz taking too long to make adjustments......but we were damn close to being 7-2 right now.....and only one of our wins has been close at all.

People have a right to be impatient with WF to take the next jump going from 6/7 wins to 8-10....but we're damn close.
