SETTING THE STAGE
• Navy and Temple meet on the gridiron for the 15th time and for the fourth time as American Athletic Conference foes when they square off on CBS Sports Network Saturday (6:00 pm) at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis. The game is presented by Navy Mutual. Due to Anne Arundel County and Maryland state rules, there will be no fans at Saturday’s game other than the Brigade of Midshipmen.
• Temple leads the all-time series against Navy, 8-6, including a 3-0 record against the Mids since Navy joined the AAC. Navy last beat Temple (31-24) in 2014 and last beat Temple in Annapolis (33-27, OT) in 2008 in what was dubbed the miracle at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. Navy came from 20 points down in the final 10 minutes to tie the game on a 42-yard fumble return for a touchdown by Clint Sovie with 37 seconds left in regulation. The Mids went on to win in overtime on a 1-yard touchdown run by quarterback Ricky Dobbs.
• Since 2015, when Navy joined the American Athletic Conference, Temple has compiled a 30-10 conference record, which is the best in the AAC. Meanwhile, Navy’s 28-13 conference record is the third best during that same timeframe.
• Saturday’s game will be the season opener for Temple. It’s Navy’s third opponent in its four games this season that the opponent has had the entire offseason to prepare for the Mids.
• Navy is off to a 1-2 start for the first time since 2012. That team, which began the year 1-3, bounced back to go 7-2 the rest of the way and finish 8-5. Navy also started 1-2 during the triple option era in 2009 (finished 10-4), 2008 (8-5), 2007 (8-5), 2005 (8-4) and 2002 (2-10).
• Navy has started three different quarterbacks in the first three games of the season for the first time since 1992 - Jim Kubiak (Virginia), Brian Ellis (Boston College), Jason Van Matre (Rutgers). That 1992 team finished 1-10.
• A win over Temple on Saturday would mark the 100th-career victory by Navy head coach Ken Niumatalolo and would make him just the 24th active coach with 100 career wins and just the sixth active coach to achieve it at one school.

Thanks for the write up. It can be an advantage for a defense to prepare for the triple option as the first game of the season, however in 2016 Army beat us week 1. We saw Houston start with some rust against Tulane 2 days ago, but quickly turn it around. Navy will be in mid season form and the Owls need to be ready. However, the Midshipmens QB situation seems unsettled. I think we start slow but turn it on 2nd half and win 31-17.

In part SID's emphasis on the prep time is a continuation of debates Navy fans were having before the AF game - increased because AF spent so long expecting a two game season.

BYU and AF also both badly out-physicalled us...and we know Temple is a tough physical team.

We're good with Dalen Morris #8 at qb. He didnt nake the trip to AF due to pre existing health issue exacerbated by altitude (didn't go in 2018 either despite being in a spot on the depth chart he should have). I like the sophmore Maynor at #2 more than the plebe but I trust Ivin and Niumat.

Definitely miss Springer at Striker too. He was often the spark to the D last year.

Recent Temple hype tweet showed celebration on our field and I had a twinge 4 years later

Not looking good for Temple so far. Defense giving up the 1st down on 3rd and 14 can’t happen.
