What happens next will be everything for this school. Umass completely blew it with it's post Calapari hire. They got to the dance the next 2 years mostly on reputation hang over and they have been in a virtual death spiral ever since. Only now - 20+ years later - are they finally starting to see some light again and that is still on shaky ground.

Part of the problem was the hire but the bigger problem IMO was the expectations of the fan base. They got spoiled by the success and lost track of the process behind it. Band wagon jumpers could not jump fast enough and it only compounded a bad situation.

WSU has to get rid of Marshall - and the next man up will be on a short leash.

Good Luck - I hope you do not endure the same fate Umass did for the last 20+ years.

UMass was nowhere near as strong a program as Wichita.

Calipari took UMass to its 2nd NCAA tournament appearance ever. Before Calipari, UMass played in a 4,000 seat gym.

Wichita went to the National Final game in 1965. They had been to 3 Elite Eights, and went to the Sweet 16 two years before Marshall was hired. They sold out their 10,500 seat arena for the whole season about half the years from 1980-2006.

I know the history a little bit, but if Marshall goes now it is under scandal and that is different than just having some down years.

I am not wishing any ill will, I just see a potential problem. The world has changed and tolerance for mediocrity has shortened - bigly.

Yeah, there is more of a recency bias and impatience for lack of success, and even what that “success” is when/if defined (if even rational) that could put Wichita in a bad place. And at a time when and where consistent success could allow one to outshine others in conference realignment considerations.

I got the impression Wichita wants to keep pace with Creighton. I don’t know if this helps any.

Still nothing. Insiders on Shockers board saying this was Patty Beamer who got the (now terminated) President to listen to her and the ball rolling for Goodman. This is all very fascinating to watch unfold.

WSU might try to ride out the season with Marshall and hope that the furor will die down if he can get a handle on his anger management issue.

They'll probably have to institute a zero tolerance policy going forward, the way Indiana did with Bobby Knight. In Knight's case, this wasn't enough prevent him from another assaultive act toward a player, and he ended up getting fired.

Whether the NCAA will accept their investigation and response and take no further action will remain to be seen.

If Marshall is even "half a Knight" in terms of nasty behavior ... he won't last in Wichita much longer.

After some allegations and an investigation into the guy, Penn State’s coach resigned. Apparently, some other stuff emerged than just a “noose” comment.

And this apparently isn’t a guy that’s even remotely as animated or explosive as Marshall.

The problem is he didn't win anywhere near as much as Marshall. Wichita State is a better men's basketball program than Penn State but the Nittany Lions are in a way better conference so there are higher expectations and PSU can afford to spend more. It's also probably easier to get rid of Chambers than Marshall (I'd have to guess Marshall's contract is more expensive and/or longer).

Men’s hockey is a bigger deal than men’s basketball.

Penn St fans don’t have the same expectations Wichita St fans have for their basketball program. You nailed it that it’s easier to get rid of Chambers than Marshall.

I’d say that the same “football culture” that caused PSU its issues of a few years ago is as much to blame on why PSU is nearly pulseless for basketball. That when JoePa was given the reigns as athletic director, you had the program careening south thereafter. Part of that was Paterno and his pride in not wanting to go anywhere near the AAU and other organized amateur ball talent citing corruption. The athletic department ran itself with Paterno’s influence ever present up until his firing before his death, but basketball was pretty much screwed at that point anyway.

It was always like basketball was run with more restrictions there than other programs. Part of this whole story (of what is known thus far) reeks of the same old s*** of that long era: Franklin himself no saint and with allegations of running the team akin to a stereotypical frat house, but, it’s basketball...PSU will not take this one lying down (the other one, go right ahead).

I guess what shocks me (no pun intended) is that this hothead coach culture has been under the lens for some time now. And other programs taking steps to stamp out other issues, related or not, does enter the narrative or world of consideration of what other programs should do. Even as circumstantial as Chambers’ exit at PSU is to Wichita State hoops, you have to know the school is going to get questions, fair or unfair, that if someone who makes a racial statement can get kicked out at a major conference program (even if they don’t deserve that distinction), what does it say about a non-major with a coach that has a legacy of some erratic and troubling behavior?

I definitely don’t disagree with any of the above, though.
