That was a great fun read! Sonny Dukes has a philosophy I long for a GSU HC and staff to have here in Atlanta.

Was SMU a "group of 5" back when they were good? Did that term exist?

RE: SMU, Preston Stone and the building of a Group of 5 power
The term 'G5' or 'P5' has come about in the past five or ten years, so no, it did not exist.

The last time SMU was a consistent national power was in the mid-80's, when we were a member of the Southwest Conference with Texas, A&M, Texas Tech, TCU, Baylor, Rice, Houston, and Arkansas. At this time the SWC could compete with any conference in the country in terms of football ability and NFL talent, so no again, SMU was in a powerful and influential conference at the time.

SWC

No. They were a major.

I just want to second this. I ponied up for the Athletic in the spring on a whim and I haven't regretted it one bit. I can't speak for other teams but the UC coverage is outstanding.

Panama I have question that I would like an honest answer to. Is there a glass ceiling on GSU? What i mean by that is GSU influenced, restricted, or controlled by Ga Tech or UGA people to the extent that those schools will block contracts, funds, misc. from them.

EXAMPLE: 1) before Jimbo Fisher was hired at FSU he was hired at UAB, but the board under pressure from U of Alabama people denied the contract because it was too much even though it was maybe 1/5 of what the Alabama coach was making. 2) the only reason UL Lafayette has to remain Louisiana Lafayette is LSU people blocked them being called strait University of Louisiana. LSU doesn't want a hint of challenge to their "Flagship" status.

Good question. I think our ceiling is what any G5/Mid Major city school is. We are not being restricted by UGA or GT. The BOR recognizes four top tier research universities; UGA, GT, GSU and Augusta University. If anything the Turner Field acquisition has launched into a very nice place athletically. But we have a lot of the issues mentioned by the article. We are the #4 recruiting ground in the country but we require SC harder than Atlanta. It's a staff recruiting philosophy issue. Elliott know the Carolinas and doesnt have Atlanta ties or coaches on staff. Trent Miles was the same way before him. There are only 4 FBS schools in the state and we are the downtown city school. Kids around the ATL academically want to come to GSU. The registrars office can attest to that. But when it comes to football our current and former staffs have been absent from Atlanta Metro High Schools. It's very unfortunate because Atlanta is sitting there for the taking. This isn't too say that Shawn Elliott and his staff are not good football coaches. Its just that recruiting Atlanta is not a priority. Marketing by the AD to brand us as the city's school is also not happening. Meanwhile GT is throwing ATL and 404 on everything which to many of us has been amusing but more power to Geoff Collins because hey the narrative is working. But it also shows that if a coach comes in and wants to brand a program as the ATL's and all 404 with most of alumni and fans living well outside the 404, then we (GSU) have zero excuse. The only thing hold don't us back is us.

Next Football and Basketball coaching hire should be the best that GSU money can buy, and then have them hire at least one coach with strong ATL ties.

I personally love the potential that GSU has to offer.

Ron Hunter did an incredible job of branding GSU MBB with the ATL. But I agree that the next football hire has to be someone willing to exploit the advantage of out geography.

This G5 term nonsense placed on the AAC is beyond stupid... With AAC solid results over the years one would think some of these talking heads would've learn by now.

TV talking heads, tone down your pathetic G5 term towards the AAC and do what's right, labeled the AAC Power6 now.

You really should not get your pressure up. You know what this game is. Has the AAC separated itself? Yes. Are you Texas , Clemson, Bama and Ohio State...? No.

lol... my pressure is fine... My point was never about any of the schools you mentioned above, silly dude... My beef is AAC shouldn't be lumped with weaker lower conferences as if it was orange orange comparisons.

Either get this league with powers or labeled this league Independent Power... Hehe

I don't think you can compare conferences. Compare teams. It changes from year to year and every team in a conference isn't totally representative of that conference. At any rate 2020 is a wash thanks to COVID. We will never know how good some of these would have been without any infections.

Yeah but neither are the teams at the mid/bottom of those conferences. The AAC continues to improve too to bottom (sorry GreenUCONN) to the point where the best AAC teams would be middling SEC or Big 10 teams and could legitimately compete for a championship game spot in the ACC, PAC or B12.

We'll find out when it comes time to represent the AAC in an NY6/CFP game this year...

It'll probably come down to UC, UCF, or SMU!

In my opinion, it will be SMU.
