As we've discussed in the recruiting thread, this is arguably the best recruiting class on paper since our great 2004 incoming class (Savery, Friday, Lehmann, Friday, Dodson, Henley, Zornes, Tacker among others), and certainly our best since the 2014 class (Otto, Chandler, Myers, Salinas, Gray and Brewer, with Pettitte as transfer).

The class includes two true Freshmen hitters who will almost certainly crack the starting lineup (1B Becker, OF/P Garibay), a redshirt Freshman transfer from Ole Miss (Walsh) who is our highest ranked HS prospect since at least Sasvery and who will likely start at either SS or CF, a SS/INF transfer (Hughes) who has started 108 games for LSU, and a grad transfer pitcher from Penn (Holcomb) who will likely compete for a weekend starter birth.

I hope we will get some relief pitching so that cost us games last year.

Baseball America just posted an article on CUSA recruiting classes, including a nice writeup on Rice's...

https://www.baseballamerica.com/stories/...g-classes/

Quote:Rice
Recruiting coordinator: Cory Barton
Top recruit: Guy Garibay, OF
Ranking: NR

The Owls brought in several transfers from four-year schools, a group that ranked them in the top 10 transfer classes in the country thanks to the likes of righthander Mitchell Holcomb (Pennsylvania), shortstop Hal Hughes (Louisiana State) and outfielder Connor Walsh (Mississippi). But Rice also has a solid incoming freshman class with impact potential.

Garibay stands out for his offensive ability. The lefthanded hitter does a good job of barreling balls and has power potential. First baseman Nathan Becker also has a good lefthanded swing and a strong track record of production.

Righthander Micah Davis has a strong 6-foot-3, 205-pound frame and throws his fastball in the low 90s. He mixes in a good breaking ball, a combination that will help him quickly carve out a role on the Owls’ staff. Righthander Reid Gallant controls his fastball-curveball combination well and his pitchability should quickly play at Rice. Righthander Dillon Janc has a projectable 6-foot-4 frame. His fastball sits around 90 mph and he has a good breaking ball, and has significant upside as he physically develops. Righthander Matthew Linskey has a big 6-foot-7, 250-pound frame and is still a bit raw, but has a big arm and offers a lot of upside.

Ben Dukes hit his head on the dugout and fell, causing him to break an ankle. He had to have surgery. Fall ball isn't going that well with all the restrictions the university has placed on them.

What restrictions? Next to tennis, baseball has almost no close contact; certainly far less than football and basketball, both of which are practicing. Most other programs are holding their usual Fall Ball.

Well, that's part of it. Most programs have been in Fall Ball, but we weren't allowed to start until Sunday. Players can't sit next to each other in the dugout. They have to go home to shower. No one within 12 feet of each other. Several players tested positive. Their parents paid their personal doctors the next day and all were negative. Docs said we get a lot of false positives because even a small cold virus may show up as positive. Collins hasn't shown up yet, and the pitchers numbers are down with some injuries and sore arms. Even a person by himself working on the field has to wear a mask. Anyway it's not a real positive environment.
