It's like if i donated $100 million dollars to my local dog shelter. What on earth would they do with it, give each mangy stray a gold kennel encrusted with diamonds?

What's the point of donating money to any college athletics program?

Also, this is part of an overall $500M gift to numerous educational institutions statewide, 80+% of which did not go to athletics.

Well, some programs can actually use the fuel, so to speak. I mean, circa 2007, when Alabama spent around $100 million to expand their stadium capacity from 91,000 to 102,000, they really were meeting unmet demand, as proven by patrons filling up those extra seats.

I just don't know what Maine will spend $90 million on. Better locker room facilities for a women's softball team that nobody will come to see either way?

I suspect the Maine athletic department will have a better idea of how to spend money on its programs than you would.

Yeah. For a school its size and profile, its athletics reflect something seriously lacking compared to others even within their own conference. Output especially in terms of football and basketball success.

Even if its not facilities that need the boost, those staffing and administrative costs...you can spend good money on that and fund it to sustain for some time to come. It can be easily spent.

So spend millions on administrative and staff bloat? To what end?

I get the impression Maine doesn’t spend much on hoops at all. Inject money into it to match even what Vermont does...how is that bloat?

The vast majority of this money is going to a new hockey arena. Which will likely also get the basketball teams back on campus.

Maine is never going to be a men’s basketball school. Hockey, football, and women’s basketball. Hockey can get back to national prominence with investment. Football is a decent FCS program. Women’s basketball is a solid mid major.

You don’t think you could get to a Vermont level in hoops?

You don’t think you could get to a Vermont level in hoops?

No. Remember- Vermont took advantage of some VERY good fortune to get where it is. They took an overweight, unrecruited local kid and he worked his butt off and turned into probably the best player in the conference since Reggie Lewis. Every school in the conference has taken chances on guys like Taylor Coppenrath, Vermont just hit the jackpot. And they happened to have TJ Sorrenstine at the same time.

That wasn’t planned. Vermont didn’t sign those guys and think they were going to win the league, beat Syracuse, and turn into the league’s power. They thought they were getting their usual Tom Brennan coached .500 team. Brennan has been at Vermont for 15 years before those guys arrived on campus. He had never finished above third, and never won more than 16 games. After four years of lightning in a bottle, it would have been easy for Brennan to return to the same mediocrity but he did the best thing he could- he got out of the way and let Vermont go hire a replacement as a team coming off an NCAA tournament win. And Vermont made a good hire. Then another one.

Vermont doesn’t have nice facilities. Vermont doesn’t have a ton of money in their program. Vermont got **** ass lucky, and then made a couple of great hires. You can’t plan to do what they did. You have to hope you get the chance to make good decisions after you get the same opportunity.

They do currently have plans for a brand new arena, so they are investing.

It's got or is spending more than Maine, correct? That's my point. It doesn't have to be a ton to spend. Simply a little more.

And, be fair to Maine. John Giannini was a decent hire for them. They lost him to a school that probably didn't have a ton of money themselves to spend on a coach. If Maine has a bit more money, the sort of stuff to show some, or any, really, commitment to the sport, I don't know if a little more money keeps a guy like that there, but maybe it makes the decision more difficult. Make it harder for other non-majors (especially irrelevant ones, as much as I love Big Five schools) to poach their guy.

Maine might just be one of the worst D1 men's basketball programs since Giannini. You have to go back to 2012-13 to find a team that won more than ten games. I simply believe even a little more money committed to the sport would make sure such a span of horror wouldn't happen again. It wouldn't take a ton to do that. And for a conference where there isn't much overall commitment to the sport or any top-level programs, I suspect a little more could go a long way there in AmEast.

Was Coppenrath better than Vin Baker? That being said, UVM basketball has had greater success than UVM hockey this century. From the sounds of it, basketball is still second banana there, since they are struggling to find the money for the new basketball arena due to Covid. https://www.burlingtonfreepress.com/stor...158352001/

They’re still planning on finishing it, it’s just delayed a bit because it’s the most expensive part of the project. They already started on it.
