Question MLB 2020/21 Hot Stove Thread
Just wondering what Marcell Ozuna will bring on the free agent market this year?

Marcell Ozuna #20
DH Bats: R Throws: R

Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic

2020 season stats

Tyen again, last year's off-season darling, Josh Donaldson, had a bit of a fall-off after his great one-year deal with the Braves in 2019:

Josh Donaldson 2020 season stats

Ozuna is going to be a fascinating case. On the one hand, the sky high .391 BABIP is obviously not sustainable. On the other hand, he improved his launch angle by 3 degrees, and his barrel and hard hit percentages by a pretty sizable amount. The downside is, he made less contact than ever, and his speed and defense numbers declined, suggesting a loss of athleticism. A team that believes in his power numbers might be willing to give him something like 5/100. Of course, it's likely to be a pretty depressed market, coupled with him likely not wanting another 1 year prove it deal, and the Braves likely to slap compensation on him, could combine to leave him with something less than what he's looking for, and a good deal for the team that gets him.

I'm confused by this one. Did they not have a strong season? That's a team on the rise. I get they want more of a proven winner, but why not let the manager grow with the team? I guess we'll have to see.

I think what he did in game 3 of the WC vs the A's was the final straw....

Last year, I was pretty sure the best thing to do was to thank Donaldson for his 1 year and let some other team overpay him for the inevitable injury-filled seasons which were sure to follow. Thanks, Twins.

That led us to Ozuna, who was underrated last offseason, and Anthropolous knew it. Now, this offseason, Ozuna presents a more difficult case, as you pointed out. A lot depends on if the NL keeps the DH. If so, then Braves should definitely consider paying Ozuna a few years (maybe 3) if they can keep his price reasonable. If not, not sure what else will be out there. Braves got the call right two years in a row. Hard to do that kind of thing 3 in a row when they absolutely need the big protection for Freeman in their lineup. Otherwise, their offense takes too big a hit and they fall a level or two down the power ratings.

What did he do? Honestly, after watching every damn Giants game till like 1am, and watching all those OKC games, i was burned out. Wasn't even really following the baseball playoffs.

He used a starter as a 4 batter opener and then had a parade of relievers who couldn't do anything.

That's....strange. Why use a SP as an opener?

Renteria started a RH starter to disguise the fact that he was planning all along to have a "bullpen game".

After four batters he switched to a fire-throwing lefty, and when that pitcher left with arm soreness, he went with three more lefties in succession. Presumably his original plan was for the LHPs to get deep enough in the game to put Colome in, but they didn't get nearly that far.

Local news just said White Sox are gunning to bring Tony LaRussa back. That’d be the most excited I’ve been as a Sox fan since trading for Griffey.

Very. Most excited I've been over pro sports since '05.

Looking to buy a retro (‘83) LaRussa jersey to wear to games. Not sure if they sell manager jerseys.

Maybe the White Sox should have a game this season at which the fan giveaway is a breathalyzer, or a certificate for a free Uber ride...

Question RE: MLB 2020/21 Hot Stove Thread
The Atlanta Braves announced the signing of lefty Drew Smyly, 31 to a one-year, $11MM deal. Trying to find some innings assistance until the kid starters take over, I guess; but he's not too far from coming off Tommy John, so there's that. Last year with the Gints, Smyley statted a 3.45 ERA across 26 1/3 innings in 2020 with 14.4 K/9 and 3.1 BB/9. Gints can compensate by signing "Braves" free-agent Cole Hamels. Hamels only appeared once for Braves.
