They didn't. The thought was that you needed to replenish the sodium that you were sweating out profusely. Electrolytes. Rehydration. Cramps. It's just that today's science has much better ways.

Like everything else. Science & technology tends to lead to different answers over time.

No need for that. Only doing what they were taught and elevated they thought was best.

RE: Question for those in the know....
I was taught to tackle the correct way. Either face up with mask into the numbers, or top of shoulder pads into the hips.
I was also a return guy, and I was taught you never fair catch inside the 10. Drives me crazy the stupid plays today. Risk:Reward guys!
Of course, I was taught the crackback blocking technique as well - which is not exactly righteous.

Shoot, my best move on defense was the head slap. It had been made illegal but they still let you get away with it.

RE: Question for those in the know....
Kickoffs should go the way of the dodo bird anyway.

Scoring team (or team starting the half) gets a fourth and 15 from the 25.

Most will punt. If you want the ball, go for it.

Alonso,
The kick off is one of the most exciting plays in the game.
Maybe they kick from the 30 or 20 and bring it out to the 30 or 40 if kicked out of end zone.
Ike would hate to see it leave the game but, kickers today can put it out of the endzone
Ike will stop in and speak to roger the next time he visits New York city and he feels safe.

Roger makes BIG MONEY, I bet he's in a gated community with bodyguards
Billy deblasio has bodyguards, but you're right New York city is a dangerous,
Ike will wait until he goes to salt lake city and the talk to him
Ike knows him from his Georgetown playground days
