In the recruiting thread, Mr. Big Blue posted “Wolfe's skill set of drop back passing doesn't fit the offense system RR likes to run.” It occurred to me that I don’t really know what offense he plans to run. Didn’t want to create a tangent on the recruiting thread so I am posting here. What do we know about what kind of offense RR plans to run and what kind of QB he is looking for?

I believe if this was true Wolff would have left this summer.

I would assume the thinking is more like the offense Penn State ran, the QB does pass and they use the TE a lot but the QB is mobile and runs as well.

Claudell is doing good work with those interviews. He's a good dude. He might not admit it but I did beat him in 1v1 once in the backyard. Only took 250 games. :)

Re: offense: Rahne has said in interviews that he's running something similar to PSU, no huddle, shotgun, varied tempo. Other sources mention PSU's "Triangle offense" (RPO spread centered around QB/RB/TE), Zone reads & RPOs, experimented with PROs. Empty sets. Wildcats.

Re: what's he looking for in a QB

A passing QB who can run. Or a running QB who can throw the bomb.

Wolff
Smartt
Williams
Anthony
Poff
Edwards (Recruit)
Shields (Recruit)

At PSU Hackenberg (8000) and McSorley (9000) both set PSU passing records. McSorley also set records for rushing yards and rushing TDs. Clifford TBD

I think Wolff more closely correlates to Hackenberg. Smartt is def more of a scrambler but if explosive plays are to be 16% of our calls I'm not sure he has the patience to wait for things to develop.

I'll agree that Wolff may not be the prototypical Rahne QB, but I think he adapts to some degree stays for the duration. To me he's the most serviceable QB of the upperclassmen.

I assume Poff/Edwards/Shields are more in the Rahne vein, but I also assume they'll need to mature before they see the field.

So did we take the last block (Rahne) in Jenga to make PSU fall to 0-5 this season? 05-stirthepot

Thanks Grommet. Wolff is most definitely serviceable, but I wouldn’t call him an upperclassmen.

Technically, I guess Wolff will be a freshman, but academically and age-wise he should be a junior next year. If he's practicing, learning the playbook and lifting weights he could be incredible for a Freshman QB with the extra maturity and experience. If he is as good as we all thought when he arrived. Apparently, he was the best QB last season, but they wanted to save his redshirt.

Actually the word from inside the program was that Stevie Williams was the best QB on the roster last season.

Wow. Then why didn’t he play? As much as a cluster last season was, BW surely would have played him there if he thought he was better.

Sorry what I saw from Wolff last year looked better than what I saw from Williams when he played QB, but I’m just a fan.

From the old program or the new program?

I would not count Williams out. He was very young for a freshman back in 2017. He's not been in the program 3.5 years but will be redshirt junior when we return to football. And instead of the 17 year old kid, he will be 21 or 22 (I believe).

He's a very talented kid which is why the moved him around to try to get him on the field. I hope he stays and finds a way to play. I was told the new staff wanted him at QB

Was told this by members of the old staff. Some of which remain in the program. And yes, he’s a heckuva athlete and could meld well with the new offense.

FWIW, I was always a fan of Stevie Williams and thought he had a lot of potential. But after the disaster at Liberty, FIU, Charlotte in 2018 and then BW going with the Smart/DeWeaver combo last year, I figured his time at QB was done. I like the guy, and hope he can be on the field one way or another. But if its at QB, we had better hope for a lot of improvement since the last time he was behind the center. I was under the impression Wolff was a lock unless we get the next Heinicke in as a new recruit.

I don't agree with their mindset on this one. They moved Williams to WR hoping to help the depleted WR core but he was obviously a better QB than Smartt or deWeaver and that was pretty clear right away. The issue is its hard on the kid to just keep moving him around.
