I watched the last quarter of this one. It was ugly. I really thought ULM was going to complete the comeback. GS gave Suits all day to run with their prevent the win defense.

RE: GaSo vs ULM game thread
Georgia Southern is allergic to defending a two-minute drill. Here are the results of each final possession of a half for GS opponents so far this season:

1H vs. Campbell: Campbell takes over with 1:14 to play. They gain a quick 10 yards, but then run out the clock.
2H vs. Campbell: Camels take over with 1:59 to play, down 7... Campbell converts a 4th down and goes 64 yards in 8 plays. GS wins by stopping a 2-pt conversion.

1H vs. ULL: GS throws an INT at midfield with 12 seconds left and immediately allows a 34-yard pass to set up a short FG that is missed
2H vs. ULL: GS rallies to score and go up a point with 54 seconds to play. Eagles allow completions of 18, 12 and 19 yards to set up GW field goal

1H vs. ULM: ULM takes over at own 25 with 1:34 remaining after GS has gone up 21-10. Eagles don't even pretend to know what a pass rush is. GS allows four plays of 10+ yards, including a converted fourth down. A terrible ball spotting fuckup by the refs puts the ball on the 2 with three seconds left. ULM rushes to the line and sends a receiver in motion. GS neglects to use a time out and the motion man ends up running a route that was pretty much impossible to stop with the Eagles' man-to-man coverage.
2H vs. ULM: Warhawks take over at own 27 with 2:47 to play. Suits completes two more passes of 10+ yards and picks up another fourth down conversion. If Suits was two inches taller (or if he hadn't gone nuclear on his throw on the penultimate play) ULM wins.

Not only do the Eagles do a terrible job of defending late in a half, they also don't see the cycle repeating itself. The only time in six halves of play where the Eagles held final possession was when they recovered the onside kick vs. Campbell. If you're not going to stop a two-minute drill, at least fail at a faster rate and give the offense a chance to bail you out.

I've always wondered (at least in the NFL) why offenses don't always play like they're in the 2-minute drill because no one can seem to defend it.

ULM seemed to do that. After that TD before the half they may have ran the ball once or twice more for the rest of the game.

Its because defenses dont always defend like they're in the 2 minute drill. A DC's thought process is " dont give up a big score, make them work for it, keep everything in front of you" which we do, but we also don't bother to cover people to make it a little challenging for them.

You have to balance not allowing yourself to get burned deep and giving up long conversions to keep drives going.

We were doing good on 1st and 2nd down but giving up too many 3rd down plays that setup 4th down conversions. ULM was 0-3 and had nothing to lose by going for it. Some of that is awareness of mentality. We can't just play conservative on defense all the time.

I know we have a young secondary but having them sit back in soft zone all game isn't helping them. Challenge them to take on these WRs. We may get burned a few times but we need to cause disruption.

I can't believe how bad Suits missed that last pass. His WR was in shock. I agree with the commentator that he say him wide open and his adrenaline went in overdrive and he just launched it. But what a way to lose. And I have seen about every awful way to lose as a Bobcat fan.

If not adrenaline, my only guess is that Suits couldn't convince himself that anyone was actually that wide open and that he had to be missing a sunken cornerback or a deep safety quickly closing the space and that he instinctively threw high to make it so only his receiver would have a chance at it if the ball was contested.

How is that Coastal Carolina coach doing that we screwed over for Tyson Summers?

I really like James Madison's coach....just for a completley random thought. I know this will be weird for GS but he is a coach with an actual HC resume.

RE: GaSo vs ULM game thread
Our coach isn't THAT bad. Yet. I'm hedging my bets on what he does this off season. Our pass defense so far this year is absolutely atrocious. We are on track to beat our all time record, which we just set last year. Despite this, our defense is statistically equivalent to what we had with Fritz. The biggest difference is our offense is can't seal the deal, and we eat clock and just go in prevent mode. My hope is that Ruse replaces DeBesse. Unless Ruse lost a massive poker bet, I don't see how or why a guy like Ruse would come back here as a position coach only. We have a solid recruiting class coming in with OL, RB and QB. I really want to see Ruse take the brakes off and just go for it.

The problem is he is not THAT good either, in any area either. Why in the hell are we accepting "not THAT bad" anyway? I like slogans but I like winning better. I just hate as fan being in a place where I am not even expecting a conference championship with the staff we have. Fritz was not perfect but he had and limited depth FCS roster and limited recruiting period his first year. Given how he has recruited and turned a dumpster fire like Tulane into a respectable competitive program given the same team Chad was given he would have us in the mix for a title not holding our breathe every week. Not trying to bash ULM but man rewatched the game on youtube and it was not us doing well on offense that is possibly the worst defense I have seen since we have moved up. The angles taken and the tackling were horrible and there was no push at all from the line. Then our defense made them look like a well-oiled machine on offense. I feel for ULM but man to squeak by them is concerning to say the least. Even if Ruse takes over this staff is not keeping up in recruiting with the top Sun Belt teams much less the G4. We have the 6,6 and now currently 9th ranked class. No team last year with a roster ranked off recruit rankings in the bottom half of their conference G5 or P5 won their conference. The only teams that out perform their roster rankings are service academies but they dont have scholarships and can throw 10 two stars guys at a position and find an overachiever quite often.

GSUA17- you should look at the final play of the game to see again how close they were to wining. We are lucky to be 2-1. Should have lost to Campbell.

I really have no doubt Campbell would have beat us in overtime. Luckily that coach did not give a crap and went for it. Also lucky the ref did not signal touchdown on the last play of the ULM game as it would have stopped the clock even if the call was turned over. No knock on ULM and Campbell but every other team has dominated them from start to finish. This is just a slightly slower decline than what Tyson did it appears.
