That vastly INCREASES travel for Texas schools. I doubt the Texas schools would have any interest in the widely spread out WAC. If the Texas schools are left behind on a Texas island, there is no reason for them to go all the way to the WAC to get FCS level schools when plenty of FCS or better expansion options exist in much closer proximity. The 4 Texas schools could look at FBS schools left behind in any CUSA/SB reorganization as well as Texas/Louisiana/Ark/Alabama FCS schools that might make sense. Either of those options would be better for Texas schools than a desperate bid to join the WAC. When it comes to the WAC, there's simply nothing in it for the Texas schools.

Lamar, Sam Houston State, SFAU and Abilene Christian are rumored going to the WAC. West Texas A&M is rumored to join along with Angelo State. Chicago State is looking to leave for cost like the Horizon. Seattle wants WCC. That would leave California Baptist. WAC is looking mostly to be a Arizona, Utah, New Mexico, Colorado and Texas conference. They were looking at Central Arkansas to join.

None of those Texas FCS schools are going to the WAC. They are not giving up their tight regional bus travel so they can fly thousands of miles for Olympic Games in the WAC against teams their fans have no familiarity with. That’s not a rumor your hearing—that’s a WAC prayer.

Why not use the WAC? There’s literally only 1 other FBS team over there. They could easily put a very nice Gulf-centric conference together.

Because you'd be stuck with its existing olympic members. Remember--there is no such thing as a football only FBS league. FBS football must be sponsored by a all sports league and at least 8 members of the sponsored FBS league must play olympic sports against one another in the sponsoring olympic sports league. The travel for olympics would be ridiculous. It would be one thing if you were traveling to play BYU or USC---but there's no reason to travel that far for teams that are simply no different (perhaps even inferior to in some ways) from similar schools in much closer proximity.

If the current WAC membership wants to leave and sell its corporate shell for a one time fee---then that might be worth considering. Otherwise, Texas schools would be better off creating a league that is designed around their needs.

If MWC do get Gonzaga, BYU and Saint Mary's? WCC can backfill with Grand Canyon, California Baptist and Seattle, while Chicago State is looking at Horizon or OVC to help cut the cost of travel.

WAC could looklike this.

New Mexico State
Dixie State
Utah Valley
Southern Utah
Colorado Mesa
Northern Arizona
West Texas A&M
UTEP

UTRGV
Abilene Christian
North Texas
UTSA
Rice
Sam Houston State
SFAU
Tarleton State?

FBS ready:
New Mexico State
Northern Arizona
West Texas A&M
UTEP
North Texas
UTSA
SFAU
Texas State

The other schools do need to build their stadiums bigger.

Conference-USA split thread You have to look at how can you actually make a perfect split without starting a new conference. Texas State could go there as well.

Northern Arizona is reported that their stadium could hold up to 15,300 people.
SFAU have seatings on the hill that could hold up to 25,000 people overall.
West Texas A&M is building a stadium that can seat 12,000 people, but they still have a drawing for that stadium to go 22,500 in the future. They can rent that other stadium for now.
Sam Houston reported that they held 16,148 people.
So, it is possible that they all can expand their stadiums even more.

Yeah, it would hinge on that. If NMSU had Liberty’s resources maybe it would have already happened imo.

Hey David, check your calendar. We are about to flip over to the year 2021.

NAU did renovations to Walkup Skydome in 2011 that reduced capacity to 10,000 and probably not expandable. J. Lawrence Walkup Skydome

WT is no longer building a new stadium; they built a new stadium that opened in 2019 (two seasons have been played in the new stadium). It seats 8,500 and expandable to 14,000. WT can not rent a stadium they do not own, they sold the old stadium in 2017 to Canyon ISD and it has been renamed. BUFFALO STADIUM

If a school has to expand their stadium before a move to FBS then they are not FBS ready.

Chicago State is looking to leave for cost like the Horizon. Seattle wants WCC. That would leave California Baptist. None of those Texas FCS schools are going to the WAC. They are not giving up their tight regional bus travel so they can fly thousands of miles for Olympic Games in the WAC against teams their fans have no familiarity with. That’s not a rumor your hearing—that’s a WAC prayer.

Word on the street is it's more about them not wanting to be in a league with UNO, IWU and HBU. Central Arkansas is already gone.

That’s not true. My wife is a Lamar alum and her very large Beaumont family are all Lamar boosters. Lamar boosters had to fight and scrap just to get football back there a few years ago. I actually attended Sam Houston St for a while and give money to that school sometimes. I assure you, neither of those schools is FBS ready, neither has the money to increase travel budgets, and I doubt either has the money to increase football scholarships by 20.

The odd thing about this David is you typically argue FOR teams being in nice tight leagues with nearby peer rivals---which makes a lot of sense for many schools. The Texas FCS teams have that right now. The WAC would have to provide some sort of massive improvement over what these teams currently enjoy and I simply don’t see what that could possibly be. In other words, what’s in it for the Texas teams? In order for realignment to occur, both sides must gain.

There is a reason the WAC is in a death spiral. They are isolated, with few replacement options in the footprint—and most of the schools on its periphery have better more convenient options. That’s hasn’t changed.

Using Strength of Schedule and other factors Sports-reference has the WAC better then ASUN and Southland with HBCU's being at the bottom. Its based on strength of schedule, and I am no way saying this is the ultimate source for ratings just chose one that I knew off the top of my head.

Unless the CFP payout expands to accommodate the million$ per team for up to 14 teams I don't see any new G5 conference going that big. 10 is the current break point.

RE: C-USA Split Rumor
I just don't see a SBC/C-USA split ever gaining traction. I know that the administrators at New Mexico State are hoping the AAC picks up a C-USA school in expansion. My guess would be the AAC taking Old Dominion, they seem to be the only team that would make sense as an add for them as long they commit the money to make the move and probably get rolled into the new TV deal at percentages each season until a full payout.
