If you're extending your footprint (and unless you're the ASUN, any expansion into Florida is a sizeable extension), and you have a travel-partner schedule, then you need two schools. Otherwise you're going from Texas or Kentucky or Norfolk for a one-off in South Florida, which isn't ideal. If you're making the trip, take the Ernie Banks approach and play two.

I get that, but, isn’t size of the conference at the heart of this issue? Nine or so members of the conference in Gulf states? I mean, let’s say the AAC backfills UConn from CUSA and it takes one of those Gulf state schools. Do you backfill with another Gulf state school for that partner component? That does no good for the northern members.

I always saw the move for both as a need for Florida schools no matter the footprint. It only lost UCF in that last big shuffle. UCF didn’t come with a partner. But now, we have both F*U’s? I don’t disagree with you...I just don’t get all of the logic. I’ve never liked the expansion by way of need of territory. And apparently, it’s not like the Sun Belt needs a Florida school to do just fine.

Where did Washington & Lee go? Did George Washington & Robert E Lee just agree to pull the plug on big-time athletics?

Well, this is what it would look like so far.
But I’d want to change the name to something other than C-USA... maybe Old South Conference.

For all these fantasy East coast G5 conferences based mostly on current eastern C-USA and Sun Belt teams, Coastal Carolina has been the most frequently left out.

I have been saying all along that CCU has been too new to FBS to make a judgment on whether they're a successful program.

They're in the Top 25 and 5-0. As the great Michael Scott said, "Well, well, well, how the turntables."

Like Suwannee they joined similar schools in Division III.

Coastal is legit and the Belt is rocking.

All these fantasy conferences everyone is drawing up are making me chuckle. I hope App stays put and the Sun Belt stays at 10. I really enjoy our conference mates. Would consider going to 12 but only if we were to add someone like a Marshall or UAB.

Truth is we are all just rearranging chairs on the Titanic with these fantasy conferences, waiting to see what the BIG12 does. If they decide to poach 2-4 AAC teams all hell will break loose and most of us will be left behind when the dust settles. App likely included in the left behinds but whatever, we will beat all of them too.

W&L dropped down in 1958. It's a small school (1,800) and they must have decided it didn't make sense --their last four years in the SoCon they were 2-29.

W&L is literally right next door to VMI. Other than Tulane and Loyola-New Orleans (another school which dropped out of Division I) are there any other major schools that sit next to each other?

How close is close enough for you? I mean just look at Boston. Tons of examples there.

Drexel and Penn's campuses border one another.

Boston College just absorbed a tiny school adjacent to them.

George Washington died on December 14, 1799

The first college FB game (Rutgers vs. Princeton) was played on November 6, 1869.

RE: C-USA Split Rumor
Time to pull a page from the Mountain West playbook and form a completely new conference. With the exception of Liberty's massive online program, the schools are remarkably similar. Talk about a tight footprint. Hopefully people can get over their personal issues with Liberty and look at athletics.

School / Undergraduate Enrollment / Football "seating" capacity / Basketball arena
App - 20,000 / 23,500 (30K with the bank) / 8,300
Charlotte - 24,000 / 15,000 / 9,100
Coastal - 10,500 / 21,000 / 3,370
Ga So - 22,700 / 21,500 (25K with banks) / 4,300
GA St - 32,000 / 24,300 / 3,850
JMU - 21,200 / 24,900 / 8,500
Liberty - 15,000 (on campus) / 25,000 / 8,100
Marshall - 9,400 / 38,000 / 9,000
ODU - 19,200 / 22,000 / 8,600
UAB - 22,500 / 47,000 (new stadium) / 8,500

Travel partners work out extremely well. Marshall-JMU / Charlotte-App / Coastal-GA So / Liberty-ODU / GA State - UAB

Houston and Texas Southern. They share some housing.

Georgia Tech and Georgia State are on opposite sides of downtown Atlanta, about a half mile apart. They shared some housing after the Olympics until Georgia Tech completely took it over. So at that point they were "next door."

And in New Orleans, UNO and Southern-New Orleans are next door to each other.

Yeah. Boston University is just across the Charles River from MIT and MIT is less than a half mile from Harvard.

It makes the 17 stoplight separation of Carolina and Duke sound like it is half way across the country.
